Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing University of Toronto bloomberg.nursing.utoronto.ca/pd Managing Urgent/Emergent Clinical Problems: A Course for Nurse Practitioners April 10 12, 2015 Program Description This intensive course will focus on the management of urgent/emergent clinical problems that may be encountered by Nurse Practitioners working in acute care. An interactive and case based approach will be utilized to review acute clinical problems with a focus on critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. The course will address shortness of breath, hypotension, decreased level of consciousness, chest pain, abdominal pain, acute kidney injury, limb pain, glycemic control, wounds of the lower limb and management of acute pain. The course will focus on equipping Nurse Practitioners with the knowledge and tools to confidently assess and develop a treatment plan through exploration of differential diagnoses and relevant pathophysiology, identification of assessment findings, discussion of the relevant diagnostic approach, determination of an initial therapeutic plan of care, and red flags for intervention/consultation. Program Learning Objectives At the completion of the course, participants will: 1. Identify and prioritize differential diagnoses for 10 common urgent/emergent clinical problems. 2. Describe pathophysiology for key differential diagnoses. 3. Understand relevant assessment techniques. 4. Identify appropriate, evidence-based diagnostics. 5. Identify initial treatment plan. 6. Identify red flags for urgent intervention/consultation. 7. Identify key scope & role issues relevant to the NP role in hospital.
