ME 295:Introduction to Advanced Manufacturing First mechanical engineering course offered using online model
ME 295: Benefits 24-7 Internet-base STEM education (in Advanced Manufacturing) Effective and realistic training/practice on modern CNC machine tools without the need for physical lab Video-game like interaction & navigation that is attractive and most familiar to young generation, and as such is expected to attract HS students to field of STEM (e.g. Advanced manufacturing) Dual credit / College credit (articulated & transferrable) Advanced skills that make students more competitive when pursuing a career in STEM/Manufacturing. Pathway to STEM career (Advanced manufacturing education) Pathway to certification (Mapped skills)
ME 295: Instruction delivery characteristics Synchronized, self-paced multiple media of instruction delivery to accommodate different types of learners Interactive 2D/3D simulation and illustrative examples Timed practice questions with feedback from virtual tutor Virtual tutor (avatar) with option to select gender and race Realistic virtual environment with videogame-like navigation Virtual tutor and lab assistant providing instruction and guidance for step-by-step training Realistic, interactive and fully functional modern CNC machine tools for advanced manufacturing Course management tool with wide range of functionality to support effective course management, instructor-student interaction, and monitoring and assessment of student performance
ME 295: Course description This introductory course covers both theory and practice of Advanced Manufacturing. The course focuses on high tech machines and processes that are significantly used in the US industry, namely milling, drilling, and turning using Modern CNC (Computer Numerically Controlled) Machine Tools and equipment. The Lab includes training and experimentation on modern CNC milling and turning machines in a virtual reality environment. A physical lab equipped with CNC machine tools is used to provide real life experience as well as test and assess the learned skills. Course outcomes include skills that are critical to the manufacturing industry, in particular the machining sector. Course is offered to major as well as non major students. High school students can register and earn college credits.
ME 295: Course outcomes After the successful completion of this course students should able to: Compare traditional manufacturing to advanced manufacturing and explain the benefits and importance of the latter Define Advanced machining and explain its key elements Explain the key elements of a CNC machine tool system (control system, machining process and NC programming) Demonstrate a knowledge of machining theory and principles Operate safely a typical modern CNC machine tool Conduct the basic procedures on CNC machine tools Write sound NC programs for milling, turning and drilling Implement NC verification using simulation tools Explain the use of CAD/CAM technology in advanced machining Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of machining process optimization Follow/use best practice when developing NC programs and/or running cutting operations on a typical CNC machine tool
ME 295: Course content
ME 295: Skills mapping Learned skills mapped to course content (based on NIMS 1 standards) 1. NIMS: National Institute for Metalworking Skills (see Appendix at the end for more information)
ME 295: Performance items Weekly Assignments (Total: 10 assignments over 12 weeks) Weekly Quizzes (Total: 10 quizzes over 12 weeks) Final project (Written part and hands on test) Skill test at the physical machine
Development phase of the course Developed course outline and syllabus Developed multimedia lecture material with animated 2D and 3D graphical illustrations, videos, and interactive simulation Developed practice questions and exercises for each lecture Developed quizzes, tests, and projects Developed virtual lab (CNC milling & turning) Interface the AVML with Oncourse (IUPUI course management tool) and test resulting system.
ME 295: Implementation steps Enrolling HS students through SPAN Identifying facilitator (from IUPUI/HS) Providing orientation to students/facilitator/instructors by SPAN Giving students access to Oncourse management tool (automatic upon enrollment with IUPUI) Installing software on HS computers Providing license to HS students for personal Desktop/laptops Providing access to IUPUI computer labs Training enrolled students & facilitator on Oncourse & Delivery tool Assigning homework, quizzes, tests, and projects (proctoring / assistance by facilitator) Regular meeting / help session by facilitator at HS Monitoring students work, attendance, participation, and performance by IUPUI instructor & facilitator Conducting course evaluation by students. Offering college credit / dual credit
ME 295: Offering at Ben Davis High School Course was offered for the second time: First time: Beta test (Spring 2009) Second time: Full implementation (Spring 2010) 30 students signed up (target: to graduate at 50% of them!) Enrolled students: PLTW Machine Tool Technology College credit: Students receive articulated transcript credit: 1 credit hour upon completion of course Students could receive additional 2 college credit hours: From Purdue School of Engineering & Technology for ME 295, upon enrollment at IUPUI From other colleges if transfer is approved

ME 295: Course Assessment Course outcomes survey to be completed by each at the end of the semester. Students assess on a scale of 1 (very dissatisfied) to 5 (very satisfied) the extent to which the online course has helped them reach the different course outcomes. An average of 4 or higher for a given outcome is interpreted as effective learning of that outcome. Quizzes, exams, and projects. Students average performance in the online course will be compared to the students average performance in other live courses. Students performance on the actual (physical) CNC machines at IUPUI Collected data, survey information, and log files generated automatically by Oncourse. The latter produces test data, and statistical data pertaining to student s grades, participation and activities.
