Guide for Users of the Windmade Supply Chain Electricity Calculator

1 BACKGROUND This document contains additional information for Users of the WindMade Standard for Products and Services relating to the WindMade Supply Chain Electricity Calculator. The WindMade Supply Chain Electricity Calculator has been developed to assist companies with determining the embodied electricity in the upstream supply chain of their Product (good or service) for which they are seeking the WindMade Product Standard label. 2 THE CALCULATOR 2.1 Introduction The Calculator is designed to be easy to use, entering data supplied by companies. It is an estimation tool, for upstream electricity consumptions (cradle-to-gate) which are associated with the manufacture of Products and delivery of Services. It also provides a view of the data quality of the result. 2.2 The database behind the tool The tool uses economic input-output lifecycle assessment (EIO-LCA) data to estimate the electricity used within an average value chain. The tool contains unique energy profiles for over 400 product groups, which are combined with the User inputs to determine an estimate of electricity extrapolated from these averages. 2.3 Using the WindMade Supply Chain Electricity Calculator There are 4 tabs in the calculator Step 1 Enter the name of the product. Enter What is being measured that is, a description of per what the upstream electricity consumptions are being calculated: If the product is a mobile phone, then enter mobile phone ; If the product is bulk cement, then enter tonne ; Page 2 of 11

If the product is a 2l plastic bottle of carbonated drink, then enter 2l plastic bottle of carbonated drink even though the Functional Unit may be per 100ml serving, the complete product should be calculated in this calculator and then converted; If the product is a 5kg paving stone, the user could enter either 5kg paving stone, or kg of stone paving the latter can be re-used for many weights of paving stone (note the same does not apply to the carbonated drink case, as a 1l bottle of carbonated drink has a different ratio of plastic bottle to content); If the product is a XYZ car, then enter XYZ car even though the Functional Unit will be per km of travel, the complete product made should be calculated in this calculator, and then converted; (See Annex IX of the Standard for Products and Services). Then enter other primary/secondary kwh electricity information known, in each case scaled to the what is being measured unit, which may require some manipulation in some cases (None of these entries are essential to calculating a kwh supply chain result, but are essential in determining if the data quality of the result is sufficient): Scope 2 (i.e. the company s own electricity use per what is being measured ): It is mandatory that this is derived from primary data and entered here; Use phase (this only applies to services and is optional for products, as outlined by the standard); Upstream electricity use (if data is known from one or more suppliers, or has been calculated from secondary data then this should be entered per what is being measured - often this will not be known, but knowing it improves the quality of the result). Finally, the currency must be entered (a choice of EUR, USD and GBP is provided, only one of which can be selected and any inputs not in this currency should be converted before being entered in the calculator) Step 2 Define the Product Group of the product being sold, by selecting: The Sector which best represents this; The Industry Category which best represents this (the choice of Sector filters the list of Industry Category ). The list of Sectors and Industry Categories is added in annex to this guidance document. It is sometimes not obvious what Industry Category a material, component or service lies within. To aid the provision of data into the calculator a list with all of the 400+ Industry Categories and a breakdown of each Industry Sub-category which falls within these is available. A search can be made on the file to find the relevant Industry Sub-category, such that the appropriate Industry Category can be selected. The Excel with Sectors and Industry Categories and list with Sub-categories is available through the WindMade head office. Enter How much does this product sell for (to Consumer)?, in the units indicated (i.e. currency / what is being measured ). Page 3 of 11

This will produce a first level of result of the electricity footprint of the supply chain, i.e. a basic result, based upon the Product Group. To enhance the data quality of the result further, information can be entered by clicking the check box Do you know he cost of the individual inputs into your product/service This allows the TOTAL cost of all inputs (excluding energy) to be entered, again in the units specified. And the number of items in the Bill of Materials which will be modelled to be entered. This brings up a table below with that number of rows (as the number is changed the number of rows changes), which can then be completed: There is no need to enter a row for every item in a Bill of Materials, these can be grouped per Industry Category. There is no need to enter everything, the general Product Group (above) will be used to fill in the part of the total cost of all inputs that is not included in the bill of materials. Attention has to be made that sufficient items are entered to reach the minimum data quality threshold. In each row: Each row can optionally be given a name; Select the Sector which best describes the material being purchased in this row; Select the Industry Category which best represents material being purchased in this row (the choice of Sector, filters this list); Enter the price spent to this item (again in currency / what is being measured ); Finally YES or NO must be selected to indicate if this has already been accounted for in the data entered in Step 1 under Upstream electricity use. (If this is left blank the calculator assumes No ); On the right, the % of total cost spend is calculated and shown; On the right, a flag indicates if all the required entries have been completed or not Results The results page shows the electricity in per what is being measured : Across the value chain: i.e. the supply chain + own operations + use phase; For the supply chain only (which is the real output of this calculator, the other elements of the value chain having been calculated by the User and entered into Step 1). Plus an estimate of the other energy consumptions in the supply chain. This is estimated from the Greenhouse Gas Emissions associated with other energy sources, as such it is an estimate in two ways: Page 4 of 11

Firstly, it uses an average of natural gas, diesel and coal; Secondly, for agricultural products there will be a considerable over-estimation because the methane and nitrous oxide associated with agriculture will be included in this energy estimate. For this reason the standard advises caution where large agricultural content is present. The results are shown in kwh. When multiplying up by volumes per year, care should be taken when converting this back into MWh. The value chain electricity consumptions are then broken down in the table below, and the accompanying pie chart into 5 categories: Supply chain elements: Primary/secondary data supplied under Upstream electricity use in Step 1 (should be highest data quality); Bill of Materials calculated portion in Step 2 (next highest data quality); Product Group calculated portion in Step 2 (lowest data quality); Scope 2 entered in Step 1 (highest data quality); Use phase optionally entered in Step 1 (should be highest data quality). The table and pie chart below that show the same data placed in 3 categories: Primary/secondary data (highest data quality); Bill of Materials calculated portion (next highest data quality); Product Group calculated portion (lowest data quality). The Electricity Percentage of the supply chain only is shown. More on the calculation of the Electricity Percentage of the product or service is included in the fourth tab. Finally the last table and chart show the breakdown of the contribution of the various elements of the Bill of Materials so that companies can see the contributions per input Electricity Percentage and Data Quality The fourth tab allows the User to refine 2 elements of the final outputs: The Electricity Percentage; The Data Quality. Electricity Percentage The upper tables on this sheet show the Electricity Percentage calculations: Enter the energy consumption per what is being measured in the own operations (Scope 1) allocated to the product or service, and the energy consumption of the use phase in the yellow cells (choice of kwh or kj). This allows the calculation of the Electricity Percentage for the Total Value Chain, which should exceed 20% to meet the requirements of the standard; Data for Scope 1, 2 and Use Phase, and for Total Supply Chain are shown separately for reference, but it is the value for the Total Value Chain which is the real output; Data already entered or calculated is shown in white cells. Page 5 of 11

The WindMade Supply Chain Electricity Calculator does not give a reliable estimation of the Electricity Percentage where agriculture (crop or animal) activity comprises a large proportion of the footprint, as greenhouse emissions from methane and nitrous oxide cannot be separated from fuels, thus resulting in an overestimate of other energy. In such situations the User shall either meet the 20% threshold using the Calculator, as this will be understated, or he shall include reference to literature about the Electricity Percentage of the Product or Service to the WindMade head office. Data Quality This table allows the User to calculate the data quality score: In the simplest situation where the only data from other sources (i.e. entered in Step 1) is good quality primary data, the data quality score is automatically shown, and the breakdown displayed in the chart; If some of the data from other sources is of lower quality the yellow cells should be used by the User to show the correct breakdown by data quality category, (noting that the amount not entered in the yellow cells remains considered as good quality primary data to ensure the calculation remains correct). As data is entered into these yellow cells, the data quality score will reduce accordingly, and the chart updates to show the breakdown entered. Page 6 of 11
