1 March 2014 FlipTube A automation friendly microtube General information / background Most commonly used micro tubes cannot be automated, as they need to be opened and closed to complete the process. Users who work with infectious / toxic materials or volatile liquids may face an issue: Samples need to be processed manually in a micro tube or with screw-cap tubes. In order to eliminate the "bottleneck" of the manual opening and closing of the lid and the existing disadvantages during processing of infectious / toxic samples or volatile liquids, the FlipTube A was developed. An optimal workflow is guaranteed through perfect interaction between smart accessories for Hamilton Automation Platforms. 2 Product information - FlipTube A assembly The FlipTube A - assembly consists of the following accessories: 1. FlipTube Tool-Set, 4 tools (park position on waste) 2. Sample Carrier for 32 FlipTube A 3. FlipTube Insert, for loading tubes in the standard tube carrier P/N FlipTube Installer and Library 5. Note: FlipTube tubes from another source 1.) FlipTube Tool-Set Tool-Set, consists of 4 FlipTube tools and fixture plate (colour code: orange) for parkposition on waste. Core Gripper (p/n , are not included) can be attached as well to the fixture plate. Only the base plate should be removed from CORE-Gripper, in order to attach the CO-RE gripper to the fixture plate. Function & Features: The unique FlipTube Tool (will come in orange) applies a stepwise gentle pressure on the rear end of the FlipTube A lid o Gradual opening of the tube lid, in order to avoid the formation of aerosols. Functional Sample Carrier for 32 FlipTube A The functional sample carrier p/n prevents accidental closing of the hinged tube lid during the opening process, enabled by smart interaction between the functional carrier and FlipTube tool. During the opening process of the tube lid, the lid is automatically locked in 90 position due to a special feature of the carrier. Window for barcoded FlipTube tubes Spring loaded pin in the carrier, to stabilize the 90 position of the lid: When opening the lid, the pin is pushed down briefly and put the lid upright. The pin then goes back to starting position and prevents the tube lid can close For easy removing of the closed tubes from the carrier we have created the TubeLifter Sample carrier with barcode windows for 32 FlipTubes Color Code: Orange 1 3/5

Note: FlipTube from another source and different material There is a FlipTube from another source in Europe available, which were originally manufactured as an alternative for Eppendorf tubes, which are used only manually. Please note, that these FlipTubes are not compatible with our FlipTube A which means, that the standard FlipTube version cannot be opened by our system. We have created our own production form and developed a special tube lid geometry to allow a perfect collaboration with our FlipTube tool and carrier. Extensive tests show that only FlipTube A is able to meet our requirements for automation.
