Welcome to Brussels Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. The Brussels-Capital Region, one of Belgium s three regions, is also a city with 19 boroughs covering 162 km 2 and housing a million inhabitants. It is officially bilingual (French and Dutch), although it boasts an astonishing variety of cultures, styles and nationalities. Being the capital of an expanding Europe, Brussels is an international city like no other. 31% of its population is of foreign origin, and this makes for a unique atmosphere in which cultures interact easily with one another. English is rapidly becoming an important language in Brussels because of the numerous international political organizations. Language is not a barrier in the capital of Europe. These same differences and contrasts can be found in architectural Brussels' various styles, where you will find Gothic cathedrals and churches next to beautiful art nouveau and art deco houses. The Grand Place (Grote Markt), with its splendid guild houses and the impressive Gothic beauty of its Town Hall, is widely considered to be one of the most beautiful town squares in Europe. Brussels is also a centre for the arts. Feel like delving into its rich cultural heritage? A wide variety of museums, theatres, and concert halls will see to your every need. Or relive the adventures of Belgium s comic book heroes like Tintin and his dog Snowy at the Comic Book Museum. Brussels is also a delight for your taste buds. Chocolate, delicious local cuisine, the smell of hot waffles on a cold winter s day, bars and pubs that never close you ll find it all. Belgium boasts an incredible diversity of beers, many of them flavoured with herbs, spices and fruits. A great many people work in Brussels. It is the headquarters of the European Commission, the European Council, the European Parliament. The Brussels-Capital Region accounts for nearly 18% of all of Belgium s exported goods and services. The compulsory medical insurance system provides comprehensive coverage, making health care affordable for all. Patients have free choice of hospital and insurance provider. A lot of people study in Brussels. Education is free and compulsory until the age of 18. The cost of attending university is very reasonable (especially compared to the US and the UK). This investment in people pays off. In a 2001 study of the OESO, the Flemish Youth (aged 15) held the world s highest scores in mathematics, ending third in sciences (after Japan & North Korea). 2 3

4 tutoring tailored to your needs To maintain our high educational standards, students anonymously assess their courses every semester. Suggestions for improvement are carefully examined and adjustments are made accordingly. And successfully so! The educational assessment for the academic year indicated that the students were satisfied to very satisfied with 97% of the courses. We do not only rely on our own assessment to monitor the quality of our education. External experts also take part in the evaluation of the qualification standards. Students form the bedrock of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It therefore comes as no surprise that our tutoring system serves as a model for other educational institutions. We conduct tutorials, practicals and laboratory sessions in small interactive groups; our teaching assistants and lecturers have an open-door policy. We make sure that every student enjoys the opportunity for individual conversations with the teaching staff. For working students, unique tutoring programmes are available. Educational TRAJECTORY counselors The Vrije Universiteit Brussel attaches great importance to helping students familiarize themselves with university life and to providing good student guidance. The recent introduction of a more flexible higher education system requires a new kind of student guidance. In order to deal with these innovations, a special educational trajectory counselor has been appointed for each faculty. University and diversity For the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, diversity is vital to ensure equality and democracy. Women, immigrants, people with disabilities, as well as people with monosexual or bisexual orientations contribute to an open-minded atmosphere and a comfortable working environment in which `different means `normal. 5 Postgraduate and Master degrees at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel EUROPEAN STUDIES The Institute for European Studies (IES) is an autonomous department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. It was created in 2001 through an initiative taken by the Flemish Government. It teaches advanced Master programmes, and focuses on interdisciplinary research in European Studies, more specifically on the role of the EU in an international setting. Within this scope, it provides academic services to scholars, policy makers and the general public. The Institute s central location in Brussels, capital of Europe, makes it a supreme workplace for students and scholars wishing to conduct research in an international and interdisciplinary setting. Benefiting from its location, the IES provides an ideal forum for conferences and workshops on European issues. Since 2003, the IES is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence. Master of International and Comparative Law Under the auspices of the faculty of Law and Criminology. outline The Programme on International Legal Cooperation (PILC) has been offering this successful MA programme at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel for over 35 years. The Institute for European Studies organises it through the Faculty of Law and Criminology. PILC is geared towards Law graduates from all over the world, and the programme annually attracts applicants from the five continents. 8 FACULTY OF SCIENCE Unica Euromaster in Urban Studies (4CITIES) OUTLINE The programme focuses on: 1) Glocalisation: the process of globalisation and localisation leading to a renewed importance of the city and urbanity in the 21st century. The city is considered a nodal point in postnational developments. 2) Europe as the unit of analysis: Europe and the European unification process are seen as part of and a reaction to this globalisation process. The scope is Europe seen through its cities and urban networks. 3) Interdisciplinarity and internationality as an added value. The Unica Master is a thematic master's programme focused on cross-disciplinary approaches and transdisciplinary practices (not in the least bridging urban planning and urban sociology, geography, etc.) with a focus on the socio-spatial analysis of cities. Biomolecular Science is a rapidly developing discipline in modern life science. It stands at the crossroads of chemical, biological, physical and computational sciences and focuses on the molecular understanding of cellular function. Anticipating this evolution, this master programme will focus on the understanding of cellular processes, biological molecules and their interactions. The two-year master emphasizes on two particular domains of Biomolecular Sciences: Structural Biology and Biochemistry and Cell- and Developmental Biology. The master is conceived as a multidisciplinary and research oriented programme. The programme also aims at developing the mind set to perform and manage research in a multidisciplinary and international context. The programme addresses the concepts behind these technologies, the building of languages and tools supporting the technologies, and their application to software construction, with a wide range of application domains, from information systems and ubiquitous computing to middleware and operating systems. It offers both EU and non-eu students the opportunity to enrol in an international programme and to spend a year in two of the three countries mentioned above. It s a multi-disciplinary programme covering electrical engineering, basic physics, material technologies, electronics and applications in different fields. Students will be trained to become top specialists in the field and to prepare for a career either in industry or in research. In addition, they will be brought into contact with several European cultures and languages and will get the chance to live in different European capitals (Brussels and Stockholm) and/or European cities (Gent, Edinburgh and Saint Andrews), cities with a rich cultural heritage. The first year will be devoted mainly to a programme of core photonics courses with essentially the same content at all institutes, complemented by a number of advanced photonics courses as well as several courses in related disciplines and transferable skill courses. In the second year the students will move to another location where they will continue to take advanced photonics, multidisciplinary and transferable skill courses and where they will carry out their master thesis (24 ECTS) in a photonics sub-field of their choice. In addition to the regular courses, all students will attend a two-week summer school at the end of the first and second year of the programme. MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS A bachelor's degree or recognized equivalent from an accredited institution (minimum 3 years full time study or 180 ECTS credits) in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Electronics, Physics, Materials Science or a related discipline. Students in their last year of such a bachelor programme will also be considered. Candidates from countries where English is not one of the official languages must prove their knowledge of English with a certificate or by proving that they have received their education in English. A minimum TOEFL score of 550 or 213 for the computer-based tests or a score of 6.5 for IELTS with a minimum of 6.0 for each part is required. DURATION 2 years. The Master of Nuclear Engineering is a demanding programme where students with high level backgrounds in engineering investigate highly theoretical subjects such as neutron physics, fluid flow and heat transfer modelling, and apply them to reactor design, nuclear safety and plant operation & control. At a more interdisciplinary level, the programme includes important areas of material science, with a particular interest in the fuel cycle. Vesalius College and its degrees are recognized by the Flemish Government of Belgium. In accordance with the Bologna declaration, Vesalius College offers the three-year European Bachelor's Degree and calculates coursework in ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credits. A PhD is awarded on the basis of research plus the authorship and public defence of a PhD thesis. This takes up to 4 years or more.
