3 All Florida College System institutions are regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC), the same entity that accredits private and public universities. The goal of accreditation is to ensure that education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. Accreditation is the recognition that an institution maintains standards necessary for its graduates to gain admission to other reputable institutions of higher learning or to achieve credentials for professional practice. In addition to college accreditation, certain workforce programs at colleges may also seek and receive specialized accreditation. Specialized accreditation normally applies to the evaluation of programs, departments, or schools which are typically a unit of a postsecondary institution. Some specialized accrediting agencies accredit professional schools and other specialized or vocational institutions which are free-standing operations. In addition to specialized accreditation, some programs are certified. For example, the National Security Agency Central Security Service designates Centers of Academic Excellence. The focus of this report is specialized accreditation and to understand the scope of specialized accreditation in the Florida College System, a survey was deployed in late The results of the survey are provided in this report. In the Florida College System, 270 workforce programs received specialized accreditation. The largest program area for specialized accreditation programs was Health Science, followed by Trades and Public Safety. Figure 1 indicates the number of specialized accreditations by program area. 4 Health Sciences Nursing programs received thirty-one specialized accreditations from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Comparatively, dental programs hold twenty-eight accreditations from the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Twenty-four programs in a variety of different health science areas, including paramedics, surgical technicians, and orthotics, are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Figure 2 illustrates the number of programs with specialized accreditations from twenty-five accrediting agencies. See Appendix A for s. 5 Trades Specialized Accreditation Report Thirty-seven academic programs in the trades held specialized accreditation from eight agencies. Survey of Florida College System institutions, fall 2015 Public Safety Of the twenty-eight public safety programs receiving specialized accreditation, seventeen are accredited by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice Standards & Training Commission (CJSTC). Four programs, including two in private security and two in private investigation, hold accreditations from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Page 3 of 6

Survey of Florida College System institutions, fall Business Five business and law programs received specialized accreditation from two accrediting agencies. Three paralegal programs are accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA). The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) has accredited a program in business administration and another in accounting technology. Education Five education programs received specialized accreditation. Four of the programs, accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), focused on early childhood education. The other program was an Associate of Science degree program in Sign Language Interpretation which is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Interpreter Education (CCIE). Page 4 of 6
