2 Carbon Zero NI is a sector wide initiative within the Further Education sector, led by South West College. It provides technology development, innovation support and specialised training to industry with the aim of developing a skilled workforce in renewable or alternative energy in Northern Ireland. The Programme, supported by the Department of Employment and Learning, extends the national and international reach of all six Northern Ireland Further Education Colleges in the provision of industry-linked R&D Services, specialist training and high quality information in the area of Sustainable Development. The programme has four key elements which are: INDUSTRY GUIDANCE Carbon Zero NI identifies international market opportunities in the area of sustainable development and clean energy and assists local companies to exploit them. Facilitating this identification and exploitation process is the Knowledge and Technology Platform. This platform consists of key members from local industry and focuses on the area of clean energy. The members assist the FE sector in gaining knowledge of the needs and requirements of industry. RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT The Programme has the key aim of acting as an engine for the development of smart, innovative, sustainable technologies. The Carbon Zero NI team across all FE colleges is keen to ensure that Northern Ireland is best placed to exploit the existing and emerging opportunities in the clean energy sector. This ambition is addressed by the Research & Development activities undertaken by the Carbon Zero NI programme where the technical research focuses on the three key areas of growth in Northern Ireland Wind Energy, Energy from Waste and Clean Energy Storage. CURRICULUM Carbon Zero NI is focused on developing a model of high impact clean and green courses which address the ever increasing need for skills and knowledge in the area of clean energy development in Northern Ireland. The courses cover areas such as Energy Awareness, Renewable Technologies, Management, Responsible sourcing of materials and Sustainable Construction. With its direct links to business and academia, the FE sector is ideally placed to assist with the development of a sustainable business community within Northern Ireland. INTERNATIONAL PLACEMENTS The Carbon Zero NI Programme, in Partnership with the Ireland Institute of Pittsburgh offer an exchange programme for aspiring engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs and other professionals focusing on clean energy technology and sustainability. 3 Studying in Northern Ireland means you can experience the fascinating heritage and culture, unspoilt countryside and breathtaking coastlines of the region. Scattered with storybook castles and an abundance of other attractions such as the awesome landscape of the Giant s Causeway and the home of the Titanic in Belfast Harbour mean Northern Ireland is an ideal destination to study. What s more, Northern Ireland made up of just six counties and only 1.7 million people means that the area is accessible to everyone without being over crowded. Northern Ireland has respected schools, colleges and universities with a wide range of world class study choices, in depth knowledge, resources and top quality teaching staff. The quality standards for institutions in Northern Ireland are amongst the highest in the world. In addition Northern Ireland s Colleges and Universities have established strong links with industry and commerce by way of its industrial liaison network. Working closely with local industry, the FE College network has shaped its curriculum against the forecasted needs of the local labour market resulting in graduates with a high level of employability. THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAN ENERGY & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Modern lifestyle now depends heavily on the use of energy. To date almost 85% of all global energy usage is derived from the use and existence of fossil fuels which have a huge impact on our natural environment. Climate change, air pollution, and the depletion of natural resources are some of the most significant problems facing the world today. Using Clean, Renewable Energy resources benefits our environment, fuel supply, reliability and our economy. Within the U.K. there is a huge drive to integrate renewable energy resources into the energy supply market. This is derived from the EU Renewable Energy Directive, which sets a legally binding target for the U.K. of 15% of all its energy to come from Renewable Energy sources by With a total gross Renewable Energy supply consumption of only 1.3% at the time the target was set, this represents a huge challenge for the U.K., resulting in renewable energy consumption to increase seven fold by To achieve this target an investment of over 100 billion will be allocated towards Clean Energy by 2020, which will provide thousands of new green collar jobs, support individual companies that are entering or expanding in the renewable industry and provide opportunities for research into renewable energy technologies. The commitment and work involved in this highlights the importance of Clean Energy in our society, not only to met our targets and goals for decarbonising energy production in the UK but also ensuring secure and safe energy supplies whilst exploiting the significant economic opportunities of the move to a low-carbon economy particularly during the economic times at present. The move to Clean Energy represents the awareness of the need for Sustainable Development in Society. As the world is a place of finite materials we need to be sustainable in order to meet the needs of human life while ensuring that the environment is healthy enough to continue to produce the resources future generations will need.
4 This strategy set specific targets and objectives to integrate Northern Ireland s legal obligations, national policies and local initiatives to work towards sustainable development. CLEAN ENERGY AND SUSTAINABILITY IN NORTHERN IRELAND Northern Ireland has embraced the Renewable Energy sector and is set to achieve a 40% renewable energy share of total electricity supply by As a region which was wholly dependent on fossil fuels it was essential Northern Ireland took advantage of the Renewable energy market to ensure it had access to a secure, competitively priced and sustainable energy supply. With some of the best conditions in Europe for renewable electricity production, particularly wind energy, it is not surprising that energy supply from renewable sources in Northern Ireland has increased by over 60% since 2005 and this figure is set to increase further in the future. In March 2006 Northern Ireland released its first Sustainable Development Strategy which highlighted the need to implement a policy to reverse the unsustainable lifestyle of the region which had been identified in the Northern Limits Reports, reporting an Ecological Footprint for Northern Ireland higher than anywhere else in the U.K. In May 2010, the Northern Ireland Executive released an updated Sustainable Development Agenda which has further reinforced Northern Ireland s commitment in developing the region as a sustainable area.

7 course guide south west college 13 The South West College offers a range of training programmes across the College s four campuses in Cookstown, Dungannon, Enniskillen and Omagh. The College upholds a level of educational excellence with students benefiting from an extensive array of workshops, equipment, international opportunities, business and academia links. The college its self has embraced renewable energy with two of its campuses now being heated by locally grown renewable biomass fuel. Sustainability for Senior Managers 1 day Omagh Sustainability is now fast becoming the key to reducing energy costs, achieving business goals, securing recovery, encouraging long-term growth and staying ahead of the game. This course is for senior managers who have little time, but a desire for their company to become sustainably focused. The course provides information and guidance on the methods used to implement sustainability into industry and the benefits which follow. The course will cover a vast number of sustainability topics giving participants a sound understanding of sustainability in an industrial context equipping them with the necessary skills to implement a sustainability programme within the workplace. The core units of the course are as follows: Defining sustainability in industry Environmental sustainability in industry Economic sustainability in industry Social sustainability in industry Engaging the workforce The course has been designed to be available to all however content is specifically focused on employees implementing sustainability within an industrial context. THE COLLEGE HOLDS A STRONG TRACK RECORD OF WORKING WITH AND SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESS IN THE SUSTAINABILITY SECTOR. SOUTH WEST COLLEGE HAS ITS OWN SUSTAINABILITY TEAM WHICH HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN A NUMBER OF PROGRAMMES SERVING TO POSITION THE COLLEGE AS A KEY DRIVER OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT AND RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGIES IN NORTHERN IRELAND. A key project in this development was the establishment of the Renewables Farm at the Camphill Community Clanabogan (one of the college s first sustainability projects). This site is used as a major resource for student projects and demonstrations to industry and has been recognised through numerous awards; Action Renewables Community Project Award (2004), the Association of Colleges Beacon Award: Churches Award for Sustainable Community Development (2005), NEMEX Renewable Energy Award (2005) and the Sustainable Ireland QUB award for leadership in sustainable development. Delivery of sustainability projects has also involved the College working in partnership with the Institutes of Technology in the Republic of Ireland to share expertise and further develop renewable energy and low carbon technologies in Northern Ireland. To support industry, the College is at the forefront of launching innovative programmes such as the InnoTech Centre in 2009 which was Northern Ireland s first inter-disciplinary business mentoring centre. In its first year of business, the Centre worked with over 80 businesses in the area of sustainability and delivered 17 STEM events to over 775 primary and secondary pupils in Tyrone and Fermanagh, developing its own bespoke Carbon Footprint Programme to increase awareness of sustainability issues; climate change and help pupils reduce their environmental impact. The College has developed and delivered an extensive number of Sustainable and Renewable courses such as the Environmental Entrepreneurs Programme and the Domestic Wind Turbine Installers Programme; the only accredited installers programme in Ireland to date. Most recently, the College has further developed its sustainability activities through the leadership of the Carbon Zero NI programme within the Northern Ireland Further Education sector. This course will equip Senior Managers with the necessary skills to develop and implement a sustainability plan within their business by understanding the concepts of sustainable development. Dr John Moore Tel: Ext: [email protected] City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma For Domestic Energy Assessors 5 days Omagh There are an estimated 1.5 million domestic properties throughout the UK which are expected to require a Domestic Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) each year. This huge demand means that the Government requires qualified Domestic Energy Assessors to undertake assessments and produce EPC's. Domestic Energy Performance Certificates not only outline the cost of heating, hot water and lighting in homes, but also give advice on how to cut these costs and reduce climate changing emissions. The EPC is mandatory and only a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor or Home Inspector can carry out the assessment. Students successfully completing this course will be deemed competent and upon successful registration with an approved body will be able to complete and submit an energy performance certificate for private dwellings. The course includes a 75 min online examination at the end of the course followed by a portfolio assessment period which lasts 4-8 weeks. The course covers the following areas: Health and Safety Various Construction Methods Role of the Domestic Energy Assessor Heating systems-different types, how they work etc What is a risk assessment what s involved and how to carry one out Survey techniques Software training Assessing the age of a property and property fixtures Preparing relevant documentation Applicants should have experience within the building industry or a relevant qualification. It includes work based learning, which is supported by academic study. There are also opportunities for study tours, seminars and project linked professional visits. The programme focuses on the basics of civil engineering design and construction and is designed to give you the opportunity to develop the technical and professional skills required by a civil engineering practitioner. This course is designed to equip students for higher technician level work when the construction industry and enable them to progress to Hons Degree Level if desired.
