The Internet of Things opens the door to the ConnectedWorld. As a leading international supplier of technology and services, the Bosch Group pursues a strong Internet of Things (IoT) strategy. In our vision of the future, each of our electronic products is web-enabled. This connectivity will open the door to disruptive business models and new services and ultimately, to the ConnectedWorld itself. Bosch Software Innovations your IoT technology and solution provider Market presence 5.1m connected devices using Suite and ProSyst Projects in many business areas 150+ IoT international projects in the areas of manufacturing, mobility, energy, home & building, city, agriculture Know-how 700+ IoT experts around the world Bosch early IoT visionary 2008 Bosch Software Innovations emerged out of the two earliest acquisitions in the IoT space 2
Opening up new business opportunities We are entering a new era of global technology innovation driven by an emerging Internet of Things. The IoT will connect physical things and logical services to form coordinated cyber-physical systems. These new systems, and the networks of such systems that will naturally arise, promise to bring significant changes to nearly every area of human activity. Simultaneously, the emerging cyberphysical infrastructure will open up new business opportunities and generate massive potential for disruption within traditional value chains. Creating new business models for the IoT IoT business models are quite different than traditional ones. In the Internet of Things we are observing a move from conventional, linear value streams to value creation within a network of stakeholders; this calls for new ways of visualizing value streams within the ecosystem. It also means that, when defining business models, the focus has to shift from the company level to the ecosystem level so that all stakeholders streamline their efforts to maximize benefits for target groups. Connecting things, users, partners, and systems The Internet of Things combines the physical world with the virtual world. Bosch is already wellestablished in both, creating reliable products of superior quality that contain a significant amount of software. With our Cloud and Bosch IoT Suite we are perfectly suited to deliver the key benefit offered by the Internet of Things: connecting users, business partners, devices, machines, and enterprise systems with each other. This new connectivity is the key factor for making the IoT happen by bringing value-adding IoT solutions in Industry 4.0, energy, mobility, smart home, and smart city to life. 3
Into the cloud at full speed The RaceCloud is set to make a broader impact on motorsport teams. The solution is based on the Bosch IoT Suite and enables racecar data to be monitored from anywhere in near real time. A radio transmitter installed in the car uses 4G mobile technology to transmit engine, position, and speed data directly to the receivers in the pit lane, where they are analyzed in real time. 4
The Cloud A trusted and secure home for our IoT solutions Bosch s own cloud the Cloud already hosts a wide array of IoT solutions. Thanks to the Cloud, owners of Bosch smart homes can, for instance, remotely check the temperature at home and adjust it as desired. It also processes sensor data from asparagus fields so that farmers can optimize their harvests and yields. An online map showing available park-and-ride spaces near Stuttgart suburban train lines is in the works, and software in vehicles can be updated over the air. The Cloud is a key element in enabling solutions. It consists of a highly scalable cloud infrastructure based on Cloud Foundry, which makes it faster and easier for IoT developers to build, test, deploy, and scale their applications. This infrastructure serves as the foundation for our Platform as a Service (PaaS) offering, which helps IoT developers create and deliver IoT solutions. German cloud location The Cloud is hosted in a dedicated data center near Stuttgart, Germany. One of the fundamental requirements for the IoT to become firmly established is that customers must be able to trust that their data will be handled properly and securely. We will fulfill this requirement by ensuring strict data protection using the latest protective mechanisms. Furthermore, the Bosch Group has set itself fixed rules for dealing with personal customer data we respect the right of our customers to know what happens with their personal data. Ultimately, our customers themselves can choose when to provide their personal data and when they want to have it deleted. Additional cloud locations are planned for the United States and Singapore. Addressing the specific needs of IoT developers, the Cloud comprises a large portfolio of readyto-use cloud services. The cloud design helps you to: accelerate IoT projects, improve time-to-market for new IoT solutions, profit from integrated security mechanisms, and lower complexity and costs in your IoT projects. Connected mobility Connected industry Connected home & building Connected energy Connected city SaaS Marketplace PaaS Cloud Base Services IaaS Compute Storage Network Security Cloud infrastructures usually comprise three levels which are also available on the Cloud: Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): This layer serves as technical foundation for IoT applications and provides the necessary resources to maintain the overlying Platform and Software as a Service layers. Platform as a Service (PaaS): This layer comprises the ready-to-use cloud services of the Bosch IoT Suite, which are tailor-made for common requirements in IoT scenarios. In addition, base services, such as database services, runtimes, an ing service, and many more, can be directly used. Therewith, our PaaS offering provides developers the tools they need to create cloudnative scalable applications. Software as a Service (SaaS): This layer represents the broad range of IoT solutions we offer our customers. Thanks to the cloud design of these solutions, customers do not have to worry about either the technical infrastructure or in most cases application installation and updates. 5
Rule-based analysis of production data At the Bosch plant in Homburg, many Industry 4.0 projects have been implemented. One of these is the rule-based analysis and processing of production data with help from software designed especially for manufacturing experts. The idea is to reduce the effort and expense that goes into monitoring relevant process data. To do this, a tool based on the Suite has been implemented to oversee relevant processes, which means that manufacturing experts can respond to deviations and faults more quickly. Leading IoT platform In a recent study entitled I4.0/IoT Vendor Benchmark 2016 Germany, the Experton Group rated the Suite as Leading. With this ranking, the analyst group attest that our offering comprises a highly attractive range of products and services, and that Bosch Software Innovations holds a particularly strong market position and competitive standing. 100% PRODUCT CHALLENGER LEADER Portfolio Attractiveness Device Insight Capgemini Cumulocity Eurotech Axiros Cognizant CSC QSC HP Infosys PTC Bosch SI IBM Atos Microsoft Deutsche Telekom Intel Experton Market Insight I4.0/IoT Vendor Benchmark 2016 Germany FOLLOWER MARKET CHALLENGER IoT Plattforms 0% Source: Experton Group % Competitive Strength 100% 6
The Suite A toolbox in the cloud for developing IoT applications and solutions The Suite is a cloud-enabled software package for developing applications in the Internet of Things. It serves as the platform on which Bosch and its customers build a broad range of solutions and projects. More than five million devices and machines are already connected via the Suite. At present, the Suite services are integrated in the Cloud marketplace. In the future, it will be possible to use certain services via other marketplaces that are based on Cloud Foundry. Addressing the needs of IoT developers With the Suite, we provide you with a comprehensive toolbox in the cloud as a Platform as a Service (PaaS). The individual, highly available software services make it easier for IoT application developers to perform their daily tasks, and facilitate rapid development of applications in the Internet of Things. These services offer all the necessary functions to connect devices, users, and companies. Providing customized functions The Suite services allow developers to quickly build, implement, and operate cloudbased and highly scalable IoT applications. We plan to gradually expand the initial set of services, frameworks, and containers, which already includes the technology from ProSyst, the company Bosch acquired in Our services are tailor-made for use in IoT scenarios and address the most common requirements: reliably managing devices, machines, and gateways providing secure access management executing software roll-out processes connecting third-party systems and services, and analyzing data. Custom IoT Solutions Hub Integration Rollouts Remote Manager Things Integrations Analytics Visual Rules BRM Permissions Hub Hub Integration Custom Connector OMA-DM Connector LWM2M Connector TR-069 Connector mbs Connector Custom GW ProSyst mbs IoT Gateways IoT Devices (IP ready) IoT Devices (IP/non-IP ready) Suite services enable the fast development of IoT applications while simultaneously connecting devices reliably. Hub: Messaging backbone for devicerelated communication as attach point for various protocol connectors Remote Manager: Administration of device functions like network connection, configuration, monitoring, etc. Things: Managing assets, reading data from assets, controlling assets, etc. Integrations: Integration with thirdparty services and systems Rollouts: Manages large-scale rollouts of device software or firmware updates, both wired and over the air. Permissions: User management, rolebased access control, and multitenancy for IoT applications. 7
The Suite provides the foundation for service enablement, both in terms of connecting things to the Internet reliably, securely, cost effectively and at scale and in terms of delivering the backing application logic for value-added services. It is made up of a set of software services that provide all of key middleware capabilities needed to build a sophisticated IoT application from top to bottom. Customers can use any combination of these IoT services as needed to rapidly implement the desired solution. Cost effective Suite customers can focus entirely on IoT application development that adds value, rather than on IoT platform development, hosting, and maintenance. This helps maximize the return on investment (RoI). For users, paying for software services is transparent: services are billed according to progressive plans that are based on the number of devices connected, active users, or transactions, or on data volume. Any additional use is then billed according to a usage-based pricing model. A freemium package is also available for each Suite service for use during testing and prototyping. Innovative The Suite supports innovative business models based on revenue sharing to minimize the business risk of our customers. It opens up cross domain business models by a consistent and systematic access to Bosch and 3rd party devices. Ready-to-use The subscription for Suite services to be used in your individual IoT projects will just take minutes. New features and services can be delivered very quickly independently from an overall Suite release cycle. You can benefit from an excellent platform with high service availability to develop IoT solutions and offer them to your customers as Software as a Service (SaaS). Open and flexible The Suite is explicitly designed to support open, standards-based approaches to integrate with other domain specific services. The suite itself is also designed to be hosted in different ways to meet differing requirements with respect to cost, elastic scale, transparency and control: Cloud, customer s own private cloud infrastructure, in a public cloud environment or in a hybrid configuration. Trusted and secure In the interests of users and end customers, we pursue the highest standards of data privacy. Our data privacy policy requires us to provide users with a transparent overview of what data is generated and give them the option of deciding how their data is used. What s more, data hosted by the Cloud in Germany is subject to the German Data Protection Act. The Suite comes with comprehensive state-of-the-art security technology that can be used directly in application development. We focus particularly on the secure connection of sensors, actuators, and embedded systems, using encryption and a public key infrastructure (PKI). It is an area in which Bosch subsidiary ESCRYPT also brings its technology and expertise to bear to meet the IoT s security and privacy requirements. 8
Bosch smart home system makes life more convenient Thanks to intelligent technology, your home can now adjust many things in the background without you having to lift a finger, making your life more convenient, secure, and sustainable. This intelligent home control is based on interconnected devices that communicate with one another via the Suite and automatically adapt to the changing circumstances of your day-to-day life. The smart door/window contact, for instance, notifies the radiator thermostat via the smart home controller when a window is open, and energy consumption is then automatically adjusted. The intuitive navigation of the smartphone app makes it very easy to set and control the smart home system, even when you re not at home. 9
No one can do I(o)T alone We believe that IoT requires a major change how established industries do business. We are convinced that the key to success is business and technology ecosystems, not individual players. That is why Bosch and Bosch Software Innovations take an active role when it comes to partnerships and activities in OSS communities, standardization bodies, and industry consortia. With the Suite, we are building an open platform for the IoT market, leveraging open-source technologies and open standards. As a strategic member of the Eclipse Foundation, Bosch demonstrates even more clearly the strategic importance of open-source initiatives in the Internet of Things. Bosch s involvement in the Eclipse community includes participating in the Eclipse IoT and Eclipse Automotive Working Groups. In the Eclipse IoT Working Group, there are three projects initiated by Bosch Software Innovations. Eclipse Vorto is an international standard and open-source tool to define the interfaces of devices and assets in a technology-independent manner. The scope of Eclipse hawkbit is to provide a software update management service for the Internet of Things. The recently initiated project Eclipse hono aims to provide uniform (remote) service interfaces for connecting large numbers of IoT devices to a (cloud) backend. It specifically supports scalable and secure data ingestion as well as command & control message exchange patterns, and provides interfaces for provisioning and managing device identity and access control rules. ProSyst, part of the Bosch Group since April 2015, is a longstanding member of the OSGi Alliance Board of Directors and has been driving OSGi specs from day one. OSGi is a globally accepted standard and the key to our gateway technology and remote technical management. It is a common software platform for the management of distributed devices and for multi-device-vendors with complex software requirements. OSGi technology is rapidly being adopted by a growing industrial community, including Bosch, as the software framework is targeting all device classes. For Bosch, OSGi offers the right balance between flexibility and hardware cost for IoT gateways. There is currently no other technology that is both more future-proof on IoT gateways and more mature than OSGi. ProSyst provides the most mature, widely used, fastest and most efficient OSGi implementation in commercial M2M and IoT applications. Its technology has already been integrated into the Suite. Bosch is a founding member of the Plattform Industrie 4.0 and an active member of the Industrial Internet Consortium. The reference architectures developed by these bodies provides a common language to enable faster industrial IoT development and blueprints for standards development. 10
Starting small is the key to making IoT initiatives successful Our experience with different industries shows that most IoT projects start with small numbers of connected devices and limited complexity. And indeed, realizing a smart IoT solution with manageable costs and time are often the key factors for successful IoT initiatives. Best-practice example: IoT in agriculture Bosch start-up Deepfield Robotics helps farmers maintain the ideal temperature for asparagus growth. In just three weeks of development time, Bosch developers created this connected sensor solution for asparagus growers based on the Suite. Cloud Sensor box Spike Temperature is controlled by turning the white or black side of the plastic sheet toward the sun Sensors Sensors measure the temperatures in the soil mound. The sensor box relays the data via the cloud to the asparagus grower s smartphone Asparagus field
