3 Session Summaries Tuesday, Oct 16 Micro- Blogging to Support Student Engagement, Maria-Elena Froese and Shohreh Hadian This session will discuss how to use micro-blogging as an alternative communication media in the classroom to promote student engagement and learning. Concepts of social media and micro-blogging will be introduced, in addition to an overview of what the research says about the impact of communication media on brain function and learning. Video Capture, Blake Handley Video capture has drastically changed over the past two years. Blake will present on how simple it is now to record everything from interviews to full lectures, and upload those material to a shared YouTube or Desire2Learn. The differences between the three recording devices we are currently using at Camosun will be illustrated, with a discussion about the pros and cons of each. Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs), Susan Chandler and Sybil Harrison MOOCs, like traditional online college/university courses, are time bound (start and end dates), designed by subject-matter experts, assessed and evaluated, and facilitated. Unlike their more traditional cousins MOOCs are open to anyone, aimed at large-scale participation, and free. What will be the impact of MOOCs on the post-secondary landscape? What is the experience of being a MOOC student? Camtasia 8 software, Bob Preston Cantasia 8 was initially just another screen capture program. It has now grown into a full featured screen capture and video editing tool. With this software you can: record on-screen activity including integration with Power Point and webcams, add imported media such as your own HD video clips and still images or audio files, record voice narration during capture or after, then share high-quality HD videos of your final production that viewers can watch anytime, on nearly any device. Upon completion of this workshop participants will learn how to incorporate rubrics into their D2L courses. Smart Phone Based Polling, Ben Moore A growing number of institutions are leveraging the increasing cell phone and Smartphone adoption of their students to create more compelling and engaging classroom experiences. Mobile devices and software can be used to create low cost alternatives to classical 'clicker' technologies, providing the potential to engage students not only in-class but also remotely. Video Conferencing Demonstration, Blake Handley Video Conferencing is now accessible and working both between campuses and to distant locations. An overview will be provided of the equipment and how it can be used to facilitate cross campus instruction, meetings, student team work, and external speakers. Blackboard Collaborate, Bob Preston Blackboard Collaborate is a web conferencing software which can be integrated with in D2L. It provides a two-way audio, multi-point video, interactive whiteboard, application and desktop sharing, breakout rooms, and session recording. Blackboard is now fully mobile friendly. Education Technology in Context, Jen Stein and Meghan Moore As educational technologies increase in both form and function it's not always easy to decide what is the best option to increase student engagement and learning. Come to this 30-minute session for an overview of the key considerations when contemplating your educational technology options. You will have an opportunity to play review games, games that teach soft skills such as team dynamics, leadership, and active listening, and frame games. You ll walk away with great ideas, game templates, web resources, and debriefing strategies. Come and play some games! Most games are for face-to-face teaching but can be adapted for online. Webinar: Increasing the Persistence of At-Risk Students In this webinar, the presenter shares six attributes of active, collaborative learning to build a culture of impact. You will also receive information on how to create these models for your course. 5

BCIT s 3D simulation lab, the CUBE, was established in January 2010 to investigate, design and develop 3D technologies to support faculty and students with solutions to this challenge.
