Instructional Design Service Catalog CETIS Design Vision Statement To strategically prepare, motivate, and empower faculty and administrators to create and deliver innovative and student-centered learning experiences, resulting in students meeting learning outcomes while positioning the College of Allied Health Sciences to embrace change in a rapidly evolving field. Introduction This Service Catalog outlines the service commitment of the Instructional Design team of the Center for Educational Technology and Instructional Support (CETIS Design) of the College of Allied Health Sciences (CAHS). The purpose of this document is to ensure consistent, high quality instructional design service for the college and to define the processes for obtaining instructional design services. 1. Expertise The CETIS Design team has a wealth of experience in higher education and technology, including teaching, program administration, course building, and instructional computing. Our charge from the Dean s Office is to leverage that expertise in partnership with all faculty to design and develop rich learning experiences for our students. This service model will better align with the growing collaborative nature of elearning initiatives in the college and the university. 2. Innovation Technology has the power to transform teaching, but it s a lot to ask faculty to be both subject matter experts in their fields and to stay on top of best practices in teaching and ever more rapidly evolving technology. Part of CETIS Design s responsibility is to stay out in front of this fast moving and ever shifting landscape and to help faculty navigate it successfully. Service Categories We offer a wide range of services that fall into one of three of the following categories: Instructional Design Interactive Learning Object Development Faculty Professional Development Instructional Design What is Instructional Design? Instructional Design is the systematic process of creating instructional materials, especially for online environments. Instructional designers typically follow some form of the ADDIE process: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. They combine learning theory and knowledge of current and emerging instructional technology to design, develop, deliver, and evaluate learning content. They also proactively research new learning technologies to determine technical and financial viability so that faculty can make informed decisions about their use in their classes. 1

What Instructional Design Services Do We Offer? Course Planning For new and continuing courses Full Course Design For new online courses Full Course Setup For new and continuing courses Course Refresh For continuing online courses Interactive Learning Object Creation For new and continuing courses Blended Learning Consultation For new and continuing face-to-face courses Informal Quality Matters Review For online and blended courses Program Launch Support For new CAHS online programs Course Clean Up For new and continuing online courses What Can You Expect from CETIS Design? CETIS Design will create a project calendar for customized to the services you need. Course Planning CETIS Design will help you develop measurable Learning Objectives for your course. They will also help you map those objectives to content, activities, and assessments so that everything in your course aligns. We will also provide you with a template for a Course Manual so you can fully plan out your course. Full Course Design CETIS Design will remain current in our field so we can match learning technology to teaching need and will partner with you to assess the feasibility of new learning technologies for your course. We will also provide design consultation for your Blackboard course site so that it aligns with your course plan. Course Setup* CETIS Design will provide you with a pre-built template and will customize your course shell with placeholders for content. This does not include loading of content and assumes that a course manual is provided by the project deadline. Course Refresh* We will copy your course and troubleshoot Blackboard issues that occur as a result of copying no loading of new content. Depending on project deadlines, CETIS Design can also work with you to find ways to integrate your course materials with the latest available learning technologies and make recommendations on new learning technologies for the course. Design and Creation of Interactive Learning Objects CETIS Design will help you imagine interactive Learning Objects for low stakes practice, enrichment, and remediation. We ll help you figure out the design, get it built for you, and deploy it in your course. Blended Learning Consultation CETIS Design will work with you to discover opportunities for blended learning, combining both online and face-to-face methods to maximize the benefits of both. Quality Matters Review CETIS Design will coordinate an informal review of your course according to the Quality Matters rubric. Program Launch Support CETIS Design will consult with Program Directors and Program Coordinators to support the planning and development of courses for new online programs. Course Clean Up* CETIS Design will QA your course using a checklist (signed off by faculty) to make sure that all links work, all dates are consistent, and that the course is ready to go. *CETIS Design will not change any content within a course without written consent. How Do We Prioritize Your Service Requests? Requests for Instructional Design Services will be prioritized based on the lead time prior to the start of a semester. The minimum lead times are: 2

What s My Role in Working with CETIS Design? We know a lot about learning theory, technology, and using Blackboard, and we commit to staying on the top of our game. What we don t know about is your subject area, so we definitely need your input and your involvement in the Instructional Design process. We also need time. You ll notice that most of our lead times in the graphic above are 2 months or more. That s not just time for us to create what you need; that s also time for us to consult with you and to make sure that we re delivering what you expect and what your students deserve. We are committed to meeting deliverable deadlines within those timeframes, assuming you are able to remain an involved and active part of the process. Interactive Learning Objects What is an Interactive Learning Object? There are many different ways to engage students with class material and new online learning technologies are becoming available all the time. CETIS will endeavor to make these new technologies available to you whenever possible. Interactive Learning Objects are one of the primary methods by which we deliver learning content to students online and encourage student-to-content interaction. Examples include: Interactive (not merely narrated) Lectures, Flashcards, Learning Games, Timelines, Practice Quizzes, and Branching Scenarios. What Interactive Learning Object Services Do We Offer? Maintain an inventory of Interactive Learning Objects Recommend Interactive Learning Objects Create New Interactive Learning Objects Train Faculty and Staff in Interactive Learning Object Development What Can You Expect from CETIS Design? Maintain an inventory of Interactive Learning Objects The CETIS Design Team will maintain an inventory of Interactive Learning Objects, including working examples for you to interact with and determine their feasibility. 3

Recommend Interactive Learning Objects Whenever possible, CETIS Design will create Interactive Learning Objects with the aim for their reuse. If it s possible to repurpose an already created learning object, then CETIS Design Team will partner with you to coordinate that process. Create New Interactive Learning Objects If you d like to use new Interactive Learning Objects, the CETIS Design team will collaborate with you to determine the design of the Interactive Learning Object. Once a plan is made and the course content is made available, CETIS Design will develop a prototype of the new Interactive Learning Object for your review. We will then work with you to develop milestones for the delivery of the finished learning object. Train Faculty and Staff in Interactive Learning Object Development If you are interested in creating your own Interactive Learning Object, the CETIS Design Team will train you to use the necessary software to do so. What s My Role in Working with CETIS Instructional Technologist/Designer? It s difficult to estimate the development time of Interactive Learning Objects as they can vary widely in complexity. Because of this, Interactive Learning Objects must be developed in close collaboration with you, the Subject Matter Expert. It s important for faculty content experts to be responsive to questions about course materials relevant to the development process. Once an Interactive Learning Object has been prototyped and approved, you can facilitate on-time publishing and deployment by providing necessary course materials in a timely manner. CETIS Design Team is committed to meeting all milestones established in the Interactive Learning Object development process, assuming that all needed materials for development are received on time. Faculty Professional Development There is a tremendous difference between teaching in a face-to-face classroom and teaching online. CETIS Design understands that - our goal is to help you make technology work for you and your teaching, regardless of whether you re teaching online or on the ground. What Faculty Professional Development Services Do We Offer? Faculty Orientation to Blackboard Online Teaching Strategies Design Time Advanced Online Teaching Series One-On-One technology sessions CETIS Shares Wiki Customized Just in Time Training What Can You Expect From CETIS Professional Development Opportunities? Faculty Orientation to Blackboard The Faculty Orientation is for new CAHS faculty and is designed and facilitated by CETIS Design staff. The course provides materials, tools, and tips for faculty s success in a CAHS online course. In this course you will get the opportunity to demonstrate online teaching principles, Blackboard functions, grading procedures, and overall course execution. It is self-paced and takes about 1 week to finish. Online Teaching Strategies This course is also designed and facilitated by CETIS Design staff. It focuses on the principles and best practices that support development of online courses. In addition, the course also identifies tangible tools and processes that you can use in building effective online courses. You ll learn to differentiate between a face-to-face course and an online course, and by applying a model of instructional design, you will end this 2 week course with the tools you need to develop a successful online course yourself. Design Time Radio Show A once a month, half-hour webinar where we provide short, 15- minute demonstrations of an elearning tool, followed by 15 minutes of open Q&A on any topic. 4

Each episode is recorded and the recording made available to the whole college and made part of our just in time resources. CETIS Shares Wiki This wiki is a repository of Just in Time training tutorials, solutions to common Bb problems, Learning objects that are available to all, and resources you may like to use in your course. We are constantly updating it and encourage all faculty to reference it often for tips and new ideas. Advanced Online Teaching Series This special teaching series is geared to experienced online faculty who are looking to kick their courses up a notch. The two-part program begins with a series of four workshops designed to give faculty a broad overview of proven strategies to increase active learning, leverage multimedia, and improve assessment. Part 2 includes consultations with CETIS Design to help participants choose a strategy that best fits their course and teaching style. The outcomes are specific revisions to an established course creating more meaningful learning experiences for students. One-On-One Support Sessions These sessions are arranged as needed and involve a CETIS Design team member sitting down with you to walk through using a particular instructional technology that you are interested in learning more about. Remote sessions via web conferencing can also be arranged. Customized Just in Time Training If there is a specific tool you would like to know how to use we can build a quick video tutorial and/or quick guide to help you get your bearings with the tool. It will be housed on our CETIS Shares Wiki: for everyone s access. 5
