2 AACC, ART Fall 2015 Page 2 of 13 COURSE DESCRIPTION: Art 209 (History of Western Art I) is an introduction to the development of architecture; painting and sculpture in the Western World from Prehistoric times through the Middle Ages (see images above). COURSE PREREQUISITES: There are no prerequisites for this class. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: Kleiner, Fred S. Gardner s Art through the Ages: The Western Perspective, Volume 1, 14 th edition. Boston, Mass.: Wordsworth Cengage Learning, ISBN# LEARNING OBJECTIVES: When a student successfully completes this course he/she will be able to: Identify the major cultures of the Ancient World and Medieval Europe. Describe the artistic and historical achievements of each culture. Demonstrate an understanding by describing the development of artistic styles within each culture and the cultural/historical/political impact on the arts. Identify iconography (subject matter and meaning) peculiar to a specific era or geographic region and explain its significance to that culture. Describe the techniques used in creating different categories of art objects. COLLEGE CORE COMPETENCIES: Anne Arundel Community College is committed to offering experiences that allow students to acquire, develop, and demonstrate growth in ten core competencies. 3 AACC, ART Fall 2015 Page 3 of 13 Awareness and understanding of the interdependence among cultures, communities, and the environment Innovative and Critical Thinking Integrating knowledge to analyze problems using different modes of thinking critical, creative, and innovative INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: The main source of information is our textbook (Kleiner, Gardner s Art Through the Ages, The Western Perspective, Vol. 1, 14 th Edition). If this is your first art class, I highly recommend Pierce, James Smith. From Abacus to Zeus. A Handbook of Art History, 7th edition (Pearson Prentice Hall, 2004). It is a dictionary of art terms and contains an iconographic dictionary (Greek and Roman gods; Old and New Testament Bible characters and stories; lives of Christian saints, etc.) This is available from ABEBOOKS An earlier edition is fine, just not too old, around 1998, available for under $5. The written text is supplemented by videos in each module. Some of these are the subject of graded Discussions. Assignments (Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Gothic modules) are designed as a creative way for you to apply your knowledge of these cultures and their art. ASSESSMENTS Your grade will determined by the following asessments: Getting Started module Due by the end of the first week of the course o Introduce yourself on the Discussion Board 10 points o Introductory quizzes (2) 10 points each. You will have unlimited attempts at these 2 quizzes and you must repeat them until you obtain percent correct indicated below. One quiz on Introduction to the Course and Syllabus: 90% One quiz on Academic Integrity: 100% o KWL chart: 2/3 rd completed at the beginning of the semester and the remaining 1/3 rd at the end of the semester 10 points each part Quizzes: Each chapter/module contains a quiz, 13 in total. Each chapter quiz consists of 10 multiple choice questions. You will have one 20 minute attempt for each quiz. No make-up quizzes will be given. Weekly discussions (9 at 20 points each) related to a specific chapter. These are submitted on the Discussion Board. The discussions are in two parts: o Submitting your original post 12 points o Respond to two (2) of your classmates post 4 points each, 8 points total Assignments (4 at 25 points each) aligned with major periods, i.e. Egypt, Greece, Rome, and Gothic Europe. These are submitted on the Discussion Board. o Submitting your original assignment 17 points o Respond to two (2) of your classmates post 4 points each, 8 points total Exams: 4 exams at 100 points each, none cumulative

4 AACC, ART Fall 2015 Page 4 of 13 Graded Work is due: You must submit your original discussion posts and assignments by Thursdays at 11:59 pm o 1 point will be deducted each day for late posts You must submit your responses to classmates posts (discussion and assignment) by Sundays at 11:59 pm The Discussion/response submission area in CANVAS is closed and will not accept any submissions after Sundays at 11:59 pm Quizzes will be available to be taken Mondays at 6:00 am o You will have a single attempt limited to 20 minutes to take each quiz. o The quiz must be completed by Sunday at 11:59 pm, not started by 11:59 pm but completed Exams will be available to be taken Mondays at 6:00 am o You will have a single attempt limited to four (4) hours to take each exam. o The exam must be completed by Sunday at 11:59 pm, not started by 11:59 pm but completed All work will be graded within one week of the due date end time LATE graded work will not be accepted unless I grant you an extension IN ADVANCE. I am usually willing to give short extensions for emergency situations, but you need to communicate with and receive approval from me before the assignment due date. Your course grade is determined thusly: points = A points = B points = C points = D points = F MOST common problems students have are: Thinking online classes are easier than traditional face-to-face classes. In fact, they may be more challenging since you do not meet on a regular basis. You are required to be very organized and highly motivated since this is NOT a self-paced course. All graded work deadlines must be met. Not checking CANVAS frequently Not reading the syllabus thoroughly. Not preparing for and completing the quizzes, discussions and assignments on time Falling behind. Falling behind. Falling behind. COURSE POLICIES: Communication: Communication is very important in a class, especially online. We don t have body language to aid in our communication. So, if you have a question, ask it, otherwise I will assume all is well. It is your responsibility to ask/ your questions so you can have the best-possible success in the class. All class members will benefit, the questions and answers can be seen by everyone. If you have a question about course content go to the Ask the Professor discussion forum; if you have a personal question me directly. I will reply to each of these within 48 hours Sunday-Thursday. ALWAYS use CANVAS to communicate with me. This will be the most convenient to use and ensure that your message will not get lost. You should check your and course announcements regularly. Attendance: Regular attendance is expected of students who are registered in distance education environments. For online courses, attendance is defined as regular and substantive student participation in virtual learning activities. You must log on and participate in all modules. Students should be aware that lack of regular attendance and/or lack of substantive student participation will adversely affect their grades. Students should be aware that lack of attendance can affect financial aid.

Regular attendance and active participation promote student success. Class Expectation/Instructional Hour: You should plan to spend eight-ten hours per week to study the material and complete dicussions/assignments. More important than how MUCH someone should study is HOW someone should study. Studying is a skill, and if students have not developed that skill, they may still struggle regardless of how much time they study. This Policy defines plagiarism as the unacknowledged or improperly cited adoption or reproduction of the ideas, words, data or statements of others, including fellow students and internet sources;. The policy reads in part: The instructor has the right and obligation to impose a reasonable academic sanction including, but not limited to, the following: A. Assign a grade of failing for the assignment; B. Assign a grade reduction for the course; C. Assign a failing grade for the course; or D. Assign an alternative learning experience or activity which shall be completed by the student as specified by the instructor. If the instructor believes that there is sufficient evidence of academic dishonesty, he/she shall then proceed as outlined in Section 3.2 NOTICE OF ACADEMIC DISHONESTY REPORT The Getting Started module contains a link to these policies and a required quiz about the Academic Integrity policy. Plagiarism and/or any other kind of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. ONLY ORIGINAL WORK by the student enrolled will receive a grade; at a minimum all other work will receive a grade of zero points. Further sanctions may also be imposed as listed above. Student Conduct Policy Students shall at all times conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates mutual respect and courtesy, displays appropriate standards of behavior, and refrains from any actions or inactions that impinge on the rights of others or disrupt the teaching and/or learning process or the operations of the college. A student found in violation of this policy or any other College policy shall be subject to appropriate sanctions in accordance with the student conduct procedures.
