Turn spring 2013 Services360 President s Message Mario Muñoz It s been an exciting five months here at Turn Services. When I joined our team in October, I knew I was joining a company steeped in tradition and excellent customer service. The dedicated teammates of Turn Services have helped us build a company that has become an industry leader in safety, compliance and customer service. For us, being an industry leader goes well beyond our own operations. We strive to be involved in our community and to serve on industry committees.there is no better example of this service to our industry as our founder, Frank Morton, being recently nominated to be the next Vice-Chairman of the American Waterways Operators. I can think of no one more deserving of this position than Frank after all his years of service to our great industry! Exciting things are happening on the operations side as well. We recently completed the purchase of our 17th towing vessel. The vessel will operate the lower harbor providing shifting services. We recently restored and reopened the Burnside fleet in order to be the consignee fleet for a rejuvenated Burnside Terminal. Our certificated passenger vessel fleet has also seen a recent addition with the purchase of our sixth crew boat, the M/V Kandaly, named after the 1994 Louisiana Derby winner. The Kandaly services the Myrtle Grove area. Turn has recently expanded into new markets and operating areas as well. In December, we entered into a longterm charter agreement for three of our line-haul vessels. Two of these vessels will be operating exclusively on the Gulf Intracoastal Canal from New Orleans to Houston. This marks the first time in our history we have expanded to being a west canal operator. While these vessels entered new markets, we wanted to maintain service to existing ton-mile towing business in the harbor. The addition of a 2,000hp charter vessel operating between Baton Rouge and Myrtle Grove has accomplished this goal. And how could I not mention the most significant recent event for us. The ribbon cutting of our new corporate office in the historic Bywater area of New Orleans! Our new work space is a testament to all of our teammates that have worked so hard over the years as we have grown. We now have a fresh, modern space for our team to collaborate. I want to thank all of you that have had an opportunity to visit us at our new location and extend an open invitation to those that may be making a trip to New Orleans in the near future! The remainder of 2013 will surely bring more opportunities for us to better serve our customers. I am most excited about the planned evolution of our Safety Management System as we continue towards our goal of Destination Zero: Zero injuries, Zero incidents, Zero harm to the environment.
Far Right: Capt. Pete Gautier, Mario Muñoz, Jeffrey Stolier, David Fennelly, Gary Poirrier, State Senator Jack Donahue, Frank Morton, Aimee Quirk, and Councilmember Kristin Gisleson Palmer cut the ribbon to the new headquarters Right: David Fennelly welcomes colleagues and guests Turn Services Celebrates Ribbon Cutting Turn Services celebrated the opening of its new corporate headquarters and operational base at 3333 Chartres Street on January 25, 2013 with a ribbon cutting and open house. Over 200 colleagues and team members attended the event. The renovation of the former molasses and syrup factory resulted in a contemporary office complex whose new components complement the existing historical building elements. David Fennelly stated: The building afforded us the opportunity not only to remain in the heart of the city, but also revitalize a building of historic significance in the wonderful Bywater neighborhood. That coupled with the view of the Mississippi River, made this location invaluable given the maritime nature of our business. Located in the former Faubourg Clouet, previous occupants include a sawmill, an almshouse, Union barracks, stevedoring offices and a coal yard. The current building frame was built by Dunbar Molasses and Syrup Company when it moved its canning plant from the edge of the Mississippi River to the current site due to improvements on the levee. Turn Services purchased the property in 2011 and began the restoration process. The building features open and common spaces, flexible work stations, and team meeting spaces which shorten the lines of communication among the company s teams, further enhancing their ability to problem-solve and collaborate on projects. Mario Muñoz, President of Turn Services stated: Our new headquarters will improve efficiency and partnerships between departments and functions which will directly benefit our customers. This positive step could not have been successfully completed without the hard work and dedication of countless employees. We are fortunate to call such a vibrant neighborhood home. WDG I Architects & Engineers provided the design for the building and DonahueFavret Contractors, Inc. served as the general contractor. WDG received the 2012 AIA Louisiana Merit Award for the Restoration, Rehabilitation, and Adaptive Use of the building.
Turn Services providing barge shifting services for a cape size vessel at Myrtle Grove Strategic Expansions Myrtle Grove Eastbank Fleet (mile 57 AHP LDB) received its first cape size vessel in May Associated Terminals loaded and Turn Services provided barge shifting services. M/V PACIFIC CREATION loaded 118,000 tons of coal via direct transfer from 73 river barges. The operation was performed in less than three days. Meraux Fleet (mile 86.5 AHP R&LDB) saw expansion and improvement on both sides of the river. On the Westbank, the fleet was expanded by 19 tiers for a total of 27 spar barge tiers. This expansion increased the capacity of the spar fleet by 160 barges for a new capacity of 216 barges. On the Eastbank, a second midstream buoy system and two shorewire tiers at the head of the fleet were added. The second midstream berth at this location is one of two berths operated by Associated Terminals and serviced by Turn Services. The berth is capable of servicing cape size vessels. Meraux Fleet serviced its first cape size vessel at these buoys in September The additional tiers provide Turn Services with a permitted capacity of 136 barges in the Eastbank Fleet, which remains a secure facility. The total expansion at Turn Services Meraux Fleet has resulted in a permitted total capacity of 356 barges. View of the Meraux fleet at the East and West Bank
M/V Secretariat joins Turn Services fleet in 2012 Horsepower added to boat fleet Turn Services has added several vessels to its fleet of boats. The crew boat division added the M/V KANDALY. This boat operates at Myrtle Grove Eastbank Fleet (mile 57 AHP) New Fleet Location at Burnside Turn Services restored and reopened Burnside Fleet (mile 169 AHP RDB), a 17 tier shorewire fleet with a permitted capacity of 136 barges. This fleet is the consignee fleet for Burnside Terminal operated by Impala. Burnside Terminal began operating the midstream buoys on January 1, The terminal is expected to be fully operational by the end of M/V Ruffian operating at Burnside Terminal Long-term charter on the gulf Intracoastal waterway Turn Services chartered three boats on a long-term fully-found charter basis. These boats M/V CITATION (2,200 hp), M/V AFFIRMED (2,200 hp), M/V SECRETARIAT (2,200 hp) will operate on the Mississippi River from Baton Rouge south and west on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to Houston. These vessels will be the first for Turn Services to run west consistently and will allow the company to build infrastructure to support more activity on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The towboat division recently acquired three vessels. The M/V SECRETARIAT is a 2,200 horsepower, newly built towboat, which is currently on long-term charter. M/V ALYDAR is a 1,440 horsepower fleet boat that is working as lead fleet boat at St. John Fleet (mile 141 AHP). Finally, M/V RUFFIAN is a 1,200 horsepower fleet boat operating as lead boat at Burnside Fleet (mile 169 AHP RDB). All of these vessels enhance Turn Services ability to provide topnotch service to its customers both on the Mississippi River and the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. To further add to its operating ability, Turn Services signed a charter agreement with Wood Resources for the m/v Kenny Billiot (2000hp), a vessel that was christened in January, Above: David Fennelly, Sarah Wood Ham and Mario Muñoz celebrate the christening of the m/v Kenny Billiot Below: Turn Services operating on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway
Triple Crown of Safety Working on the river is challenging and ever-changing, from sunny skies and low water to hurricanes and high water, maintaining absolute safety is something we always pursue. As a company, we must never let up in our efforts to keep ourselves and our team members safe. In 2011, Turn Services kicked off the Triple Crown of Safety program. The program was established to recognize a boat, facility or operation that completes 365 consecutive days without a man overboard, an oil spill, a reportable injury or significant property damage. Since the program rolled out, eleven pushboats, four fleets, both crew boat operations and the Operations Center have earned this award. This is quite an accomplishment and shows real teamwork and effort by everyone involved. It has been a pleasure to hand out the awards and mount the Triple Crown plaques. The real importance of this program is the increased focus on safety we see throughout the Turn Services operation. At every fleet and every vessel visited, all team members are wearing their work vests, steel toes, and hardhats where required. This is very impressive and goes a long way to protect our people. Even more impressive is that Recordable Incident Rate (RIR) is steadily declining, being almost cut in half from 2010 to 2011, and cut in half again in The Triple Crown Award requirements have worked well and while they represent a high standard, it is obviously attainable. Current holders of the Triple Crown Award include: M/V SIR BARTON M/V JEAN LAFITTE M/V WAR ADMIRAL M/V SEATTLE SLEW M/V SECRETARIAT M/V GALLANT FOX (2nd Year) M/V COUNT FLEET (2nd Year) Chalmette Crewboats Harahan Fleet (2nd Year) Meraux Fleet (2nd Year) Welcome Fleet (2nd Year) Operations Center Bob Mueller Vice President of Compliance, and Risk Management
Turn Services 3333 Chartres Street New Orleans, LA One Good Turn Mickerria and Albert Bentley distribute bikes to kids Two significant events are scheduled to raise funds for the company s One Good Turn charitable organization. Turn Services will host its 3rd Annual Glenn Otero Memorial Golf Tournament at Bayou Barierre Golf Course in Belle Chasse, LA on April 23rd. The tournament is named for Capt. Glenn Otero, a port captain for Turn Services who lost a long fought battle with cancer. 2nd Annual Glenn Otera Turn Services Golf Tournament One Good Turn was established in 2010 to provide needed assistance to individuals and organizations in the communities in which Turn Services operates. Funds are used to provide donations to deserving charities and individuals who require assistance after facing a personal tragedy. A highlight of the program is the tradition of providing bicycles and toys to children during the holidays. In June, Turn Services hold will hold its Annual Work for Charity Day. Employees participate by donating a portion of their wages that day. The company will donate a percentage of revenue from barge cleaning, repair and fleeting services as well as three hours of boat revenue from each towboat and launch boat. 15 Years of Service Awards Turn Services presented five individuals with 15-year awards in honor of their dedication and commitment to the company at its 2012 Annual Holiday Party. As a token of appreciation, each honoree was given a trip for two by the company. In addition, 26 team members were honored for celebrating 5 years of service.
