1 PacketStar The Lucent Technologies PacketStar Media Gateway provides a cost-effective entrance strategy for service providers who want to introduce innovative broadband services without up-front investments in a broadband network infrastructure. Video, voice, and data traffic, traditionally carried on separate overlay networks, can now be integrated on one platform while preserving the appropriate Quality of Service (QoS) level for each traffic type. Service providers gain a costeffective platform for rapidly deploying revenue-generating, value-added Internet access, voice, and video services while reducing recurrent costs and improving profit margins. High-Capacity Broadband Access Solution The Media Gateway opens an opportunity window at the edge of the network for service providers seeking to increase service revenue quickly. It provides high-density broadband access and aggregation in a small footprint at the central office or customer premises. Supporting the full range of PacketStar central office family interfaces, the PSAX 1250 gateway becomes the new focal point for aggregation of frame relay, time division multiplexing (TDM), and native ATM services. However, the gateway is geared to service provider applications requiring entry-level edge provisioning with easy migration to larger channel capacity as application requirements grow. It supports up to 10 I/O modules in the 19-inch shelf, and up to 14 modules in the 23-inch shelf in any mix. The system has a highly robust architecture that features a dual-bus 1.2 Gbps backplane and optional common equipment card redundancy, high port density, NEBS compliance for co-location, and the password security needed for central office deployment.

2 Any-Service, Any-Channel Flexibility As with all PacketStar central office products, the system features unique any-service, any-channel flexibility. Circuit underutilization is kept to a minimum, because circuit emulation, frame relay, and ATM traffic can coexist in n x 64 blocks within the same T1 or E1. This feature enables users to create innovative, soft-selectable service provisioning options that will generate new revenue quickly. Sample strategies include: ATM cell switching services Native LAN interconnection Frame relay/atm interworking Circuit emulation for private line voice/data support AAL-1/AAL-2 Voice Telephonyover-ATM (VToA) Distributed video/multimedia networking Robust Architecture The backplane of the system features a dual-bus architecture that not only provides several layers of protection for system resources, but also delivers 1.2 Gbps total bandwidth. Further system resilience is ensured by optional redundancy for common equipment (power supplies, Stratum 3-4 timing modules, and CPU modules). Scalable Design Port density and highly scalable design enable network expansion at minimal cost. The CPU manages the ATM signaling and routing across all the ATM interfaces. PNNI/ILMI support allows providers to rapidly scale their network through auto-discovery and SVC connection types. Investment Protection The system supports all the PSAX central office interface modules. Since these modules feature complete interchangeability across the PacketStar central office product line, the service provider s initial capital equipment investment is protected, interoperability is assured, and operating costs are reduced. CPU modules and system software are also interchangeable, eliminating version branching and compatibility problems. All modules can be easily upgraded by downloading new software and firmware drivers. NEBS compliance enables service providers to meet the stringent Bellcore requirements for co-location with other equipment. Quality of Service Assurance QoS assurance is supported on the system through the patented AQueMan traffic management scheme. The AQueMan system s queuing and cell-switching capabilities differentiate voice, video, and data requirements, providing multilevel QoS. The AQueMan system fine-tunes traffic delivery by assigning internal traffic type priorities that are even more specialized than the ATM Forum service-class definitions. The system s end-to-end traffic prioritization capabilities enable delivery of unique classes of service for both IP- and circuit-based traffic. With ten specific classes of service available, carriers can offer clients differentiated levels of service for both data and voice traffic, enabling them to deliver applications, such as virtual private networks, with enhanced QoS.

3 Breakthrough Voice Technology Based on the latest voice-compression technology, the voice server modules used with the system deliver eight times the call capacity of traditional TDM circuits. The modules achieve this while maintaining toll quality and reducing costs by nearly 30 percent per channel. The system supports G.726 adaptive digital pulse code modulation (ADPCM) and G.729A algebraic-code excited linearprediction (ACELP) voice compression with G.168 echo cancellation, silence suppression, comfort noise, and fax/modem tone detection and bypass. Connection Gateway Like the rest of the PacketStar central office products, the system features an applications programming interface (API) that supports various VToA solutions requiring ISDN-ATM and SS7-ATM interworking. The system s Connection Gateway API enables communication with the Lucent Softswitch and ConnectStar call controller. Key Applications Traffic Aggregation A single system, positioned at the edge of the carrier network, can aggregate traffic from a large number of enterprise network customers. The system can deliver the traffic to the ATM backbone over one high-speed OC-3c trunk. Upstream traffic can travel at speeds ranging from n x T1/E1 and T1/ E1 to T3/E3, OC-3/STM-1, or even OC-12c/STM-4. In this application, the system becomes a single point of access into the ATM core, enabling common management for fast and efficient circuit provisioning and Traffic Aggregation at the Edge highly granular circuit control down to the individual permanent virtual circuit (PVC). The system's highdensity concentration also results in much more efficient use of core facilities. DSLAM Concentration Today s small office and home office customers demand high-speed digital services in support of Web calls and cable modem, dial-up, and ISDN connections. Local exchange carriers (LECs) using the system can satisfy these requirements with minimal equipment outlay. The system, with its versatile range of ATM and non-atm interfaces, accommodates high-speed IP traffic originating from 100 Mbps Ethernet platforms, frame relay traffic from digital subscriber line (DSL) concentrators, and native ATM traffic from cable modem links. 4 Wireless SM Interconnect Voice Telephony-over-ATM Using Media Gateways at the edge of the network and the GX 550 WAN switches in the ATM backbone, carriers can provide superior VToA performance. The system interfaces with the core network at speeds up to OC-12c on the upstream side and provides an interface to voice switches, enabling transport of voice over ATM within an existing voice infrastructure. Acting as a voice gateway for local access or toll/ tandem switched virtual circuit operation, it supports SS7 signaling for call setup and processing. CDMA MSC Soft-Handoff The PSAX media gateway s soft-handoff architecture enables your customers to connect to multiple base stations simultaneously, allowing your MSC to always select the strongest signal as the primary connection. As mobile users move from station to station, the MSC changes connections seamlessly, always keeping primary signal strength at its most powerful. The PSAX media gateway provides the interconnection switch among MSCs that ensures handoffs are reliable and cost effective. In previous soft-handoff implementations, MSC cellular switches, such as the Lucent, were interconnected by a mesh topology, physically linking the packet handlers of ATM (PHAs) on one MSC directly with all of the PHAs or packet switched units (PSUs) on MSCs. Typically this mesh was and in most cases, still is comprised of numerous OC-3 facilities. In contrast, when the PSAX media gateway is used for interconnection, a single OC-3 between MCSs can be used in place of the nine OC-3s. More savings occur as the network is built out and other MCSs are added. In addition, the PSAX media gateway offers increased reliability with automatic protection switching (APS) on the OC-3 trunks between MSCs. The, together with a connection gateway such as Lucent Softswitch and ConnectStar, performs Internet call diversion to deliver IP traffic to the Internet service providers (ISPs) over dedicated primary rate interface (PRI) or ATM lines, maximizing the use of the circuit switches for voice traffic. Because the CLECs retain switching and routing control, they can use ISPs with centralized facilities and an infrastructure that aggregates the ILEC-bound trunk facility. 6 Private Line over ATM Carriers selling DS1 leased line services to business customers on a point-to-point basis can use ATM to aggregate and transport these services. As the customer base grows, the scalability of ATM enables the carriers to expand these services while converging their other voice and data overlay networks. AQueView Element Management The system can be managed via the console interface, any SNMP-based network management system (such as HP OpenView or SunNet Manager) or the Lucent AQueView Element Management System. The AQueView system supports comprehensive, real-time, and centralized element management, including configuring and upgrading the system, and fault and performance monitoring. Flexible and scalable, the AQueView system is available as either a client/server or stand-alone application.
