1 Next Generation SONET/SDH Done Right Traditional time division multiplexing-based SONET/SDH systems were originally designed for voice services. But today's Internet-driven traffic growth consists increasingly of data. The challenge facing carriers is to provide voice services and manage this exponential growth of data traffic, while preparing for a range of new, differentiated services and an almost insatiable demand for bandwidth. Fortunately ADC has the solution: the Cellworx Service Transport Node (STN). The Cellworx STN supports not only voice services, but also video, data and Internet traffic, all in the same system. Its flexible, scalable architecture supports rates from T1/E1 to OC-48c/STM-16c. 2 I I Cellworx STN Service Transport Node for Next Generation SONET/SDH The Cellworx STN is the next generation SONET/SDH optical network system. It enables high-speed access and transport of all types of services, including voice, video, data and Internet traffic through a single system. The Cellworx STN enables service providers - from incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) to emerging competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs) - to replace inflexible access and transport networks with high performing, scalable optical systems. By combining the best of SONET/SDH with advanced technologies, the Cellworx STN provides a complete and efficient system for deploying today s wide-range of broadband services. Today s transport services are no longer voice driven. The Internet is forcing carriers to handle not just voice, but data and even video traffic with existing equipment. This infrastructure, based on SONET/SDH time division multiplexing (TDM) technology, was not designed to efficiently handle multiple services. But in today's market, carriers must not only provide these services, but do so while conserving capital. That requires a metro service transport system that carries multiple services on a single platform. The Cellworx STN does exactly that. Carriers can use the Cellworx STN in metro access networks where traditional SONET/SDH equipment exists in ring, star, or point-to-point configurations. Since the Cellworx STN performs service access multiplexing and ATM virtual path ring functionality (as defined by Telcordia GR-287/ITU I.60), carriers no longer have to install separate equipment for each type of broadband service. They can simply add a service module to the Cellworx STN and eliminate the enormous expense of overlay networks. As a result, service providers infrastructure costs are dramatically reduced. Thus Cellworx STN s flexible, scalable architecture is ideal for metro access networks for transporting broadband services. 3 Cellworx STN Service Transport Node for Next Generation SONET/SDH The Cellworx STN s capabilities are a superior fit for aggregation and transport of services. Voice, video and data traffic is seamlessly transported throughout the metro access network from the customer premises. High-speed interfaces link these services to core switching sites to minimize port consumption on broadband switching systems. The Cellworx STN's architecture makes maximum use of ATM and packet technologies to carry multiple services over a single pipe, while providing each with the appropriate quality of service. This is a dramatic improvement over traditional SONET/SDH systems, which provide dedicated pipes for each type of service with fixed qualities of service, typically doubling the need for ring bandwidth. The Cellworx STN, on the other hand, lowers equipment costs by reducing the number of transport nodes required. This bandwidth optimization enables service providers to support additional customers and generate more revenue with the same amount of equipment. SONET/SDH Reliability Preserved One of the major challenges facing service providers today is the need to maintain the same reliability for data and video services that customers have come to expect with voice services. Although customers are demanding these services that traditional SONET/SDH was not designed to handle, they still expect the technology s legendary reliability for them. The Cellworx STN provides full protection of access interface and ring cards. It delivers less-than-50ms switchover upon ring failures with the same reliability as SONET/SDH. And it lets carriers guarantee customers specific levels of service. For example, voice services can be given high priority while data services are provisioned at a service level based on access charges. High Profits Gained Getting the customer s service needs up and running needs to be instantaneous. In today's competitive environment, long lead times are simply unacceptable. The Cellworx STN s full range of access interface cards and ring cards enable carriers to supply high speed, multiple services today, reducing service delivery times. The architectural design of the Cellworx STN cuts capital costs by eliminating the unnecessary waste of bandwidth. Cellworx STN s concentration of multiple services and efficient use of bandwidth directly increase the number of customers a carrier can serve. And serving more customers yields more revenue. In addition, the elimination of overlay networks and reduced switch port consumption on the broadband switching system keep infrastructure costs down. Thus, the reduced complexity and combined functionality of the Cellworx STN equip carriers to compete effectively in the evolving telecommunications marketplace.
4 Cellworx STN Bandwidth-Efficient Architecture Traditional SONET/SDH multiplexers utilize the capacity to transport information, be it voice, video or data, by internally dividing it into fixed synchronous transport signal containers/virtual containers (STS/VC). With the Cellworx STN, the rigid mapping structure of this architecture is removed, resulting in a more efficient transfer of traffic. Thousands of broadband circuits can now be provisioned versus dozens with STM technology As data services enter into the mix of voice services, service providers face a daunting task: how to provide customers with an array of broadband services while also preserving the reliability of proven SONET/SDH networks. Traditional SONET/SDH vendors are trying to solve this problem by throwing bandwidth at it, resulting in higher speed transport rings within the metropolitan area. This does solve the bandwidth demand, but only temporarily, and at significant cost. Additionally, this methodology has a serious shortcoming it does not allow traffic to share the bandwidth. Instead, customers are allocated a fixed slice of bandwidth based on their maximum usage requirement, even though most customers use just a few bites of that slice. The Cellworx STN allocates each customer only the amount of bandwidth required at any given moment. Bandwidth sharing can often support many customers over the same bandwidth formerly occupied by just one. By transporting only application bandwidth, and without the hindrance of structured STS/VC mapping, the Cellworx STN can increase bandwidth efficiency in data communications as much as five fold. 4

When a customer wants to increase bandwidth allocation or number of connections, carriers will need flexible provisioning to stay competitive. The Cellworx STN supports several alternatives for system and service management, including an embedded sub-network manager called Cellworx Vision, the Craft Access interface, and commercial off-the-shelf network management systems. To simplify management of a Cellworx STN ring, each node can be accessed remotely from any other node using an intuitive menu-driven craft interface. In addition to the functionality of the craft interface, Cellworx Vision provides a GUI view of equipment and service configuration management, performance management, and fault monitoring of up to 50 Cellworx STN nodes. Cellworx Vision makes in-service upgrades possible, so the network never has to be shut down to service a customer, add a node or upgrade software. In addition, ADC provides many alternatives for network management. The Cellworx STN fully supports Telcordia Technologies systems such as TIRKS, NMA, and NCON. Through Cellworx STN's embedded SNMP interface, fault monitoring is easily supported on a number of carrier- and enterprise-class fault management systems. 6 Cellworx STN For Backhaul of Traffic A key application that demonstrates the capabilities and efficiencies of the Cellworx STN can be seen in a backhaul application. Most xdsl deployment solutions aggregate multiple xdsl lines into a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer () in order to statistically multiplex customers and service types into one transport facility. The Cellworx STN is used not only as a aggregator of s, but also allows for the efficient transport of all xdsl traffic throughout the metro access network. 7 Cellworx STN For Backhaul of Traffic It has been estimated that each has an average trunk payload of 10 Mbps. With traditional SONET/SDH equipment, this would require an entire OC-/STM-1 pipe to support the bandwidth because the traffic is internally divided into fixed payloads. Using this scheme, only 16 s can be supported over an OC-48/STM-16 ring. This also means that 16 ports are required to switch the traffic at the core or backbone network. Usage is now linked to the actual bandwidth provisioned. The result is a significant increase in number of s supported and at half the ring speed of traditional SONET/SDH systems. In addition, the number of ports required on the broadband switching site is decreased four-fold. 8 Cellworx STN For Frame Relay Service Another application that demonstrates the capabilities and efficiencies of the Cellworx STN can be seen in the delivery of frame relay service. Frame relay can improve response time and dramatically reduce transmission costs in a number of network applications, such as file transfer, Internet access and other data-intensive applications. The Cellworx STN offers both fractional and channelized frame relay service on the same access interface card and supports both T1 and E1 speeds. The frame relay interfaces support both Network Interworking and Service Interworking as defined by the Frame Relay Forum. This enables both frame relay-to-frame relay connections and frame relay-to-atm connections across the metro access network. In this capacity, the Cellworx STN would be used in conjunction with a TDM-based access network capable of providing 1/0 cross connect functionality. This allows individual sub-rate customer services originating on separate fractional T1/E1 lines to be groomed through the digital cross connect for hand off to the Cellworx STN. Because the Cellworx STN system supports other types of services, such as voice and data, aggregation of all these services can occur within the same chassis. The Cellworx STN can then efficiently transport services not just from a building, but from the entire business park to the backbone network. At the backbone network, the Cellworx STN will hand off the frame relay traffic to a frame switch, while distributing voice and data traffic appropriately. Alternately, the Cellworx STN could hand off the frame relay and other data traffic directly to the data switch. Many frame relay service lines can be aggregated on a single ATM or Frame Relay network interface card, resulting in reduced capital and maintenance costs over traditional SONET/SDH systems. This eliminates the need for a frame switch, cutting both cost and real estate demand in the central office. It also helps carriers consolidate expensive core switches in the backbone network and move towards a unified network architecture. 8
