Course Description: This course is intended for the general practitioner/specialist that has had little or no experience in placement, soft tissue grafting and restoration of dental implants. Implant surgery during the course will be tailored to the participant s level of expertise. Overview 1. Lectures covering treatment planning, placement, soft tissue management, hard tissue management, and restoration of dental implants. 2. Implant placement in sawdust mandibles to familiarize the dentist with the sequence of placement of dental implants. 3. Surgical guide fabrication and use with 3-D digital imaging. 4. CD with lectures and articles pertaining to implant dentistry. 5. Implant demonstrations. 6. Implant placement by participants. 7. Implant restoration and occlusion techniques. The participants will be placing implants in the 2nd and 3rd month. Patients may be supplied by the participants or will be supplied by the course. Tuition: $6,300 - includes three to four implants surgeries per participant. Additional material fees (i.e. Implant = $500) may be applied if the participant supplies his/her patient. Professional Liability: Attending dentists from the State of Tennessee or from other states, who perform implant surgeries for their patients at the College of Dentistry as part of the externship, must present proof of professional liability insurance and a copy of their state dental license. These documents must be presented to the course director as part of the treatment planning procedure at least one month prior to surgery. Dentists who have not presented these documents to the course director prior to patient treatment will not be allowed to perform surgical procedures. Course Description: Candidates who successfully complete this course and its prerequisites* will receive a Certificate of Standard Proficiency in Dental Lasers recognized by the Academy of Laser Dentistry, an international organization with more than 1200 members in over 25 countries. Has the excitement surrounding the introduction of lasers to dentistry been more smoke than substance? Since 1990, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of TWELVE different wavelengths for dental use. These different wavelengths create a world of difference in how the lasers operate, and their usefulness in the oral cavity. The use of lasers for specific procedures found in everyday general practice will be highlighted. First Day The first day will detail laser use in the following subject matters: 1) Non-Surgical, Surgical and Regenerative Periodontal Therapy 2) Surgical and Restorative Implantology 3) Fixed and Removable Prosthetics 4) Oral Medicine/Oral Surgery/Oral Pathology 5) Pediatric and Adolescent Operative Dentistry 7) Endodontics 8) Pedodontics/Orthodontics 9) Esthetic/Cosmetic Dentistry 10) Practice Management/Marketing Second Day The second day workshop will give each participant hands-on experience with the various wavelengths, performing surgical procedures on in-vitro models (pig mandibles). Real time videos of routine laser procedures will be part of the in-depth discussion of specific instrument settings and techniques for laser surgical procedures. Attendees are expected to perform the following procedures on the models: Gingivectomy Biopsy Frenectomy Crown Lengthening Initial Periodontal Pocket therapy Attendees are urged to bring: loupes a suture kit (any type of suture material...needle holder... scissors) and encouraged to bring: small diode lasers (if you already own one. If not, the course will provide one for you.) At the conclusion of the course, the participant will be familiar with the various wavelengths used in dentistry today, their effects on oral tissues, and their uses for specific oral diseases and pathologies found in everyday practice. They will be able to incorporate this knowledge into a basis for determining which laser wavelength is most appropriate for their practice, and be able to incorporate hard and soft tissue laser dentistry into their practices first thing tomorrow morning. *Standard Proficiency Certification will be awarded upon successfully completing an online examination administered by the Academy of Laser Dentistry. The candidate must own a laser or have access to a laser, and have taken a previous introductory laser course. The candidate must become a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Course Description: This course is designed to provide the knowledge needed to successfully monitor the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia in a private dental practice. Some of the topics to be presented include a review and update on basic physiology, information on patient evaluation for the use of nitrous oxide, a discussion of the role of nitrous oxide in the dental practice, a review of the new equipment and techniques, and knowledge of the indications and contraindications for using nitrous oxide. Approved by Arkansas Board of Dental Examiners to meet requirements to become a Registered Dental Assistant. 7 Course Description: The use of implants in dentistry has exploded over the last few decades. As more and more general dentists are being educated on the benefits and applications of implants, implants are finding their way into an increasing number of dental practices. This presentation is designed to demonstrate the evolution of implant treatment planning from a multi-modality approach to the practice of creating ideal bone structure for optimum root form placement.
