1 CEP Curriculum Document Form for General Education Courses Accompanies LSS Proposal: Approved LSS Please complete the following form to define the General Education objectives addressed by your course. Please complete one General Education Objective form for each General Education Objective where you will identify the educational activities and the assessment tools that will be used to determine if the learning objective was met. General Education Objective: These are the objectives approved by the Faculty Senate. A course must satisfy at least one of these objectives to be considered a General Education course. 1. Demonstrate effective communication skills in English. 2. Demonstrate effective problemsolving skills. 3. Demonstrate effective computer utilization skills. 4. Demonstrate knowledge of basic scientific principles. 5. 3 GENERAL EDUCATION COMPETENCY FIVE PROPOSAL How People Function in Society Course Number and Name: COM Media and Society All courses with a General Education designation will include, to the extent possible, critical thinking, written composition, oral discussion, and graphic components. To obtain the General Education Competency Five designation, the proposed course must meet all of the criteria listed below. Criteria: Courses designated General Education Competency Five will: Enable students to demonstrate knowledge of the diversity in human societies, including historical, political, economic, and cultural aspects Enable students to understand how other people live and think Enable students to become prepared to make and support constructive social policies To obtain the General Education Competency Five How People Function in Society designation, the proposed course must meet all of the outcomes listed. Outcome Students will be able to identify and correctly use terms and concepts that explain human/social behavior in historical, political, economic, and cultural frames of reference. Students will be able to recognize and explain the foundations, structures, and processes of contemporary societies. What educational activities will be used? On-line readings Documentary and short video Classroom discussions Individual and group exercises in identifying examples of terms, concepts, perspectives (using national and international historical and contemporary media examples) Power Point Models of media structures, processes Classroom exercises on diverse structures and social functions Classroom discussions, Q&A What assessment tools will be used? Bi-weekly 1-page responses using historical, contemporary examples of terms, concepts Term project demonstrating relations between a major popular cultural trend and social relations and cultural conditions. 2-3 written assignments (w. on media structures and social action, and democracy. Term project demonstrating impact of media structures on programming popular culture trends in context of social relations and conditions

4 Students will be able to recognize, analyze, and interpret human experience in terms of intellectual, historical, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Class discussions, Q & A Classroom activities on media narratives/images of cultural diversity, stereotypes, and multiple symbolic meanings Quiz, final exam Assignment on semiotics and social construction of meaning Assignment on media production and social use/impact of entertainment Term project demonstrating media programming relation to social norms and behaviors. Student oral presentations on media structure, content, and cultural knowledge (and human experience). All General Education courses will be reviewed by the CEP sub-committee for General Education. To obtain the General Education Competency Seven designation, the proposed course must meet all of the criteria listed below. Criteria: Courses designated General Education Competency Seven will: Enable students to understand how technology affects life and the environment. Enable students to understand technological applications and their effects on society or understand social stimuli to technological development. To obtain the General Education Competency Seven Relationship between Technology and Society designation, the proposed course must meet all of the outcomes listed. Outcome Students will be able recognize, analyze and interpret technological development in modern life. Students will be able to explain social implications to technological development. What educational activities will be used? On-line readings Documentary and short video Classroom discussions Individual and group exercises in identifying impact of media technology on society (using national and international historical and contemporary media examples Power Point graphics on media technology, social use, and cultural impact Classroom exercises demonstrating how diverse media technologies frame communication norms and patterns What assessment tools will be used? Written response on historical & contemporary examples of media technology development and impact on society. Written response social developments leading to inventions of media technology 2-3 written assignments (w. on the social and historical conditions of media development (including writing, print, radio, television, mobile,
