(Be aware that approval of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter None ) NONE Explain, when appropriate, how this new/revised curriculum supports the 10 goals of undergraduate education: General Education Goals to Success: The Writing Minor will operate within an over-haul of the English program. Below are the ten goals of the new program, including the writing minor. 1. Attain effective skills in (a) oral and (b) written communication, (c) quantitative reasoning, and (d) the use of information technology. The English department s focus on these four principles will not change. However, as the proposed curriculum requires students to take more advanced courses to fulfill degree requirements, students will be required to perform the four skill areas at a higher level compared to the current curricular requirements. 2. Learn to think critically to solve problems. A core focus of the English department will remain in critical thinking and problem solving. As in 1 (see above), students will be required to take more of their load at a higher level and will therefore be asked to perform these skills will greater proficiency. 3. Be able to work and learn both independently and collaboratively. The proposed curriculum will not only ask students to perform these skills at a higher level, but it will also encourage students to learn independently and collaboratively in designing their course selections to suit their professional development. 4. Engage questions of ethics and recognize responsibilities to self, community, and society at large. The proposed curriculum will continue the department s emphasis in these areas, but, again, will ask students to do so with a stress on higher-level classes. 5. Understand the diverse ways of thinking that underlie the search for knowledge in the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. The proposed curriculum will increase the diversity of the English minor s classroom experience in that in removes required courses and replaces them with student choices within a framework. 6. Develop the intellectual curiosity, confidence, and engagement that will lead to lifelong learning. Under the proposed curriculum, students, working with departmental advisors and within general guidelines, will take control of their programs of study, consequently building their confidence and engagement. The proposed curriculum then will set in motion a process and a method of life-long learning. 7. Develop the ability to integrate academic knowledge with experiences that extend the boundaries of the classroom. The proposed curriculum encourages and requires students to engage more directly in course selection and program development, making it necessary for students to consider extra-classroom experiences and potential. 8. Expand understanding and appreciation of human creativity and diverse forms of aesthetic and intellectual expression. As in the answer to No. 5 (see above), the proposed curriculum removes the required courses, encouraging students to design their own minor and thus implicitly recognizing diverse needs and expressions.
3 9. Understand the foundations of United States society including the significance of its cultural diversity. The proposed curriculum will ask students to engage with these ideas, concepts, and practical applications while studying at a higher level. 10. Develop an international perspective in order to live and work effectively in an increasingly global society. The proposed curriculum will continue the department s emphasis in these areas, but, again, will ask students to do so with a stress on higherlevel classes Identify other units affected by the proposed changes: (Attach permission from the affected units. The aim of the Writing Minor is to help students become flexible and effective writers in a wide range of media and genres. Program Requirements: (Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the Course Catalog. If this is a revision, be sure to indicate the changes being made to the current curriculum and include a side-by-side comparison of the credit distribution before and after the proposed change.) The Writing Minor Students take 15 CREDITS in 5 of the writing-intensive courses listed below, including at least one course in three of the following categories.
