1 School of Business and Management Acting Dean: Leonard Kwok-Hon CHENG, Chair Professor of Economics Senior Associate Dean: Steven J. DEKREY, Adjunct Professor of Management of Organizations Associate Deans: Kate CHAN Angela NG, Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance The School of Business and Management (SB&M) comprises six departments: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Business Statistics and Operations Management, Management of Organizations, and Marketing. The School enrolls almost 40% of the University s undergraduate students and approximately 30% of its postgraduate students. All departments offer undergraduate as well as postgraduate programs through to the doctorate. Building on a strong broad-based foundation, undergraduate students choose a program in which particular skills are acquired. Thus, graduates are able to enter a specialized job market while retaining sufficient flexibility and adaptability for future career growth. Most postgraduates are enrolled, either full- or part-time, for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, and research students study for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. Strong emphasis is placed on scientific and analytical methods as the fundamental pedagogical approach, supplemented by the use of case studies appropriate to Hong Kong and its neighboring region. The School takes full advantage of the University s state-of-the-art technological capabilities in its instruction and research. The School is the first business school in Asia to be awarded dual accreditation by the US-based AACSB International The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, and the European Quality Improvement System. Its full-time MBA program was ranked by the Financial Times as among the world s top 50. The Financial Times has also awarded the School with the top position in Asia Pacific for the executive education programs that it specially tailors for companies. Its joint executive MBA program with Kellogg School of Management, was ranked 3rd in the world in 2006 by the same paper. The School organizes the largest international student exchange program in Asia for its undergraduate programs with participating partners from a total of 97 major business schools in Asia, Australia, Europe, Mexico, North America and New Zealand. One out of every two undergraduate students has a chance to go on exchange for one semester. The MBA program has over 51 exchange partners worldwide. INTERNATIONAL CO-OPERATION The School of Business and Management is very international in all its teaching, research, and service functions, and is recognized as a leading business school in Asia. 169
2 SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT A close partnership was established between the School and the Anderson Graduate School of Management of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) during the inception stage of the School. Senior academic administrators and staff from UCLA were seconded to the School to advise on curricula matters, offer joint executive education programs, recruit, teach and conduct research. In return, the School provides a homebase for UCLA in the Asia-Pacific region. In 1998, the School established a joint Executive Master of Business Administration Program with the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. Currently, some 50 senior executives working in different locations of Asia are attracted to join the program each year. EXECUTIVE PROGRAMS Associate Dean, Executive Education, Corporate Development and China Strategy: Kate CHAN The School helps companies from all over the world to stay on the forefront of business development and practices through open-enrolled and customized non-degree executive development programs. These programs combine theoretical framework with practical insights. They focus on learning with immediate relevance to business executives and companies. A series of short programs on various topics are offered throughout the year of open enrollment. These executive development programs typically span from one day to two weeks and are targeted to help working executives to gain knowledge within a short period of time. These programs include topics on such themes as Meeting the China Challenge, Strategic Marketing, Financial Management for Value Creation, Strategy, Leadership and Strategic Human Capital Management, and other management topics. In response to the growing demands of companies and organizations for customized programs, our faculty and staff will work closely with companies to identify the training needs and design customized programs to tailor for their needs. Many of these tailored programs are in the form of short one- to five-day non-residential program and others are in the form of one- to three-week residential programs at HKUST campus or offsite venues upon clients requests. Programs have been developed for a number of public organizations, Chinese enterprises and multinational corporations. In addition to these programs, the School offers a seven-month part-time Executive Diploma in Management (EDM) program to provide a quality general management education to local executives. The School provides a full range of general management education (EMBA, MBA, EDM and short executive programs) for executives with different managerial experience and academic and career inspirations. UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS Associate Dean and Director of Undergraduate Programs: Angela NG, Adjunct Associate Professor of Finance In the academic year, the School of Business and Management offers nine BBA programs and two BSc programs. In addition, the School participates in the four-year Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management leading to the award of two bachelor s degrees, the BEng and BBA, upon completion of the program by the 172
5 School of Business and Management students. This program has been offered jointly with the School of Engineering since the academic year. All undergraduate students in the BBA programs, including the BBA program in Global Business, are required to complete a common core curriculum in their first year of study. On completion of their first year, with the guidance of academic advisors and approval from the Undergraduate Programs Office, students will select a program in one of the following areas: accounting, economics, finance, information systems, operations management, management of organizations and marketing. The curriculum of each of these programs is designed in such a way that a student can have double majors in these areas if he or she wishes to do so. Therefore, graduation with dual program designation (e.g. BBA in Finance and Marketing) is possible. Those students who need a broad and general education in business and management can choose to study in the General Business Management program without any second major. In addition to the BSc Economics and Finance program launched in , the School has also offered the BSc Quantitative Finance program since Students in these BSc programs will follow a distinct curriculum. Detailed curriculum for these undergraduate programs are presented online at BBA Program in Global Business The BBA in Global Business is an undergraduate program designed for students with a strong desire to make the most of their undergraduate management education. It is a small, select and dynamic program which has been offered by the School of Business and Management since Students follow a custom-designed curriculum. Apart from providing comprehensive training in business, the program offers exclusive courses designed to develop students skills necessary for the pursuit of international careers in general management, including critical thinking, problem solving, socially responsible leadership, and communications. In recognition of the importance of international exposure and to provide students with a global perspective, students in this program participate in a wide range of enrichment programs offered by the Business School including a one-semester exchange at one of our partner universities, study trips abroad, internship or work-study in multinational corporations, seminars with business leaders, business mentoring by seasoned business executives, joint activities with international universities, and possible participation in international case competitions. The program also emphasizes enhancing students language abilities. Besides training in English and Putonghua, students in this program will take an introductory course in a third language such as French, German, Japanese, Latin, Greek, or Spanish. Global Business students are also required to specialize in a second major in one of the following business disciplines: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Information Systems, Operations Management, Marketing, and Management of Organizations. 173
