2 NURSING PHILOSOPHY We, the nurses of the S.I.V.U.H. believe the patient, as an individual is the central focus of nursing practice. The nursing service participates in an interdisciplinary team approach to patient care and encourages collaboration with the wider team, including the patient s relatives. We aim to assist the patient and their family achieve the optimum level of health and wellness through providing a safe, friendly environment and the provision of the highest quality of care. Through training and education, we promote and facilitate the continuing professional and personal development of nursing staff in order to enable them to provide a high standard of evidenced based care for patients and their families. 5 General guidelines for practice placements in SIVUH Off Duty Please contact the CPC allocated to the clinical area for off duty hours at least one week before placement commences. Please note that unless otherwise informed by the CPC morning handover commences at 7.45am in all wards. Student Information Folders There is a student information folder available in each clinical area. This folder also includes a student information leaflet specific to that clinical area. It is advised that each student would access this folder on the first day of placement in a new clinical area. This folder will help orientate you to the area and staff. Identification It is compulsory to wear and have clearly visible your hospital badge at all times when in the hospital. These badges will be given to you during your in-house induction week. Policies, Protocols and Guidelines SIVUH hospital policies, The Practice Placement Agreement, An Bord Altranais Student Guidelines and U.C.C. nursing student guidelines together govern nursing students personal and professional behaviour while on practice placement Hardcopies of these documents can be found in each clinical area. These are also available in the nursing site of the SIVUH intranet. This can be accessed from any computer within the hospital.

6 You must be familiar with the content of the nursing policy and hospital policy folder before completion of your initial practice placement in the SIVUH Within the first week of your practice placement it is mandatory that you read the hospital Access Policy Statement and the Grievance and Disciplinary Procedure for pre-registration BSc Nursing Students. Confidentiality Patient information is privileged and confidential. Professional judgement and responsibility must be exercised in the sharing of such information with professional colleagues. Uniform Student Nurses-Female Navy trousers Mauve striped tunic Navy shoes/sandals Student Nurses-Male Navy trousers White tunic with mauve striped trim on sleeves Black shoes/sandals Different coloured lapels are provided to distinguish year groups. First Year Nursing student-liliac Lapel Second Year Nursing Student-Yellow Lapel Third Year Nursing Student-Navy Lapel Fourth Year Nursing Student-No Lapel to be worn Note 1. Hair must be tied back and off the face while on-duty

7 2. Jewellery-minimum-no chains allowed in the interest of safety. Stud earrings and plain band allowed. 3. Mules in the interest of safety not allowed 4. Navy/black stockings only allowed 5. Navy (female) and navy (male) cardigans only allowed 6. Name badges to be worn and clearly visible at all times on-duty 7. Uniforms must not be worn outside the hospital 8. Chewing gum is not permitted while on duty 9. Wristwatches are not permitted in the clinical area-please wear a fob watch. In the interest of the profession the above must be adhered to at all times. Locker rooms Both female and male locker room facilities are available for all nursing students. Locker keys will be allotted to each student at the commencement of each practice placement and must be returned on completion of the placement. Fines will be sought from students when locker keys are mislaid. Eating is not permitted in the locker rooms. 8 Preceptors Prior to commencing your placement the CNM and CPC will collaboratively allocate you to a preceptor. This is documented in the Student/ Preceptor Practice Placement Allocation Sheet which is kept in the nurses station. On the first day of your practice placement please liaise with your CNM regarding your allocated preceptor/associate preceptor. It is then your responsibility to identify yourself to your preceptor/associate preceptor and arrange your first interview. Throughout the placement, students are required to bring their assessment booklets and time sheets with them each day. General Placement In-house Please present to the Ward Manager in uniform on first morning of placement at 7.45hrs (unless otherwise stated). The CPC allocated to this area will call to you during the day. CPC Support on External Specialist Placements When SIVUH students are undertaking external specialist placements they will be contacted by telephone at the beginning of their shift by their allocated CPC. A time will be arranged within the first week for the student and CPC to meet. The student will be again contacted by telephone during the second week. The CPC will make a visit if requested by the student or if any difficulties arise. In the final week the CPC will arrange a time to visit the student.

9 If there are any difficulties/problems arising outside the arrangements please do not hesitate to contact the CPC and/or link lecturer assigned to that area. Operating Theatre Please present in your student nurse uniform. Changing Room and shower facilities are available within the OT department. A locker will be allocated to you. Scrubs and surgical clogs will be available for you in the theatre locker room. On your first morning of placement please present yourself to the OT dept CNM. You will be orientated to the department You will be allocated a preceptor for the duration of your placement in OT. The CPC allocated to the Dept will call on you during the day. Theatre Placements include: General operating theatre 1 and 2 ENT operating theatre 3 and 4 Gynae operating theatre Day surgical operating theatre Recovery room Endoscopy Suite Library Service The SIVUH medical library services are available to nursing students. This service provides access to reference and research material. The internet is also available. Photocopying and printing services are available for a minimal charge.

10 In- service In- service education is run locally in the hospital. When a topic is of relevance to you, your CNM/Preceptor/CPC will arrange for you to attend.
