What Will We Learn? What are BMPs? Why we need them? What to consider when selecting them? What should your BMP include? BMP ideas for the six minimum categories

What is a BMP An idea, philosophy, strategy, program, practice, or device which when implemented prevents, removes, reduces, or eliminates pollution in storm water discharges into storm drains, water courses, or waters of the U.S.

BMPs Two basic types- Source controls Treatment controls

Source Control BMPs Operational practices that reduce potential pollutants at the source. These may include:» Education / training» Storm drain stenciling» Impervious paving» Policies» Proper storage of pollutants

Treatment Controls BMPs Treatment methods to remove pollutants from storm water. These may include:» Grass lined swales» Catch basin inserts» Trash filters on inlets» Oil water separators» Infiltration basins» Minimization of impervious surfaces

Why Do We Need BMPs? Best Management Practices Prevent pollution Protect the environment Protect natural resources Protect our future generations

BMP Selection What should I consider when selecting my BMPs? Regulatory requirements Identified areas of concern Drainage areas Address specific operations Bus Barns Maintenance facilities Storage areas Maintenance crews

BMP selection What should your BMPs include? Measurable goals Timeline for implementation Procedures to meet your goals Assessment tools Person(s) responsible for implementation and coordination

BMP Progression Develop your BMPs Based on: Requirements Areas of concern or activities Measurable Goals Address the six minimum categories Implement your BMPs on a: Time schedule Year(s) of implementation Definable tasks BMPs fully implemented By the fifth year Assess your BMPs for: Effectiveness Modifications Additional / New Review BMPs yearly
