2 Career Information & Advising Module 1 Working with the Career Center The purpose of our career advising, information, and programming services is to assist you in solving current career problems and making appropriate career and academic decisions. Our goal is to help you solve your current career problems while improving your skills for making future career decisions. Objectives 1. To introduce you to career advising, information, and programming. 2. To help you select the activities that will assist you in solving your career problems. Below Are Activities to Help You Achieve These Objectives a. Examine a Career Center brochure, career guides, and other handouts to learn more about services and programs. b. Ask a Career Advisor to explain Career Center services and the career advising process to you. c. Ask for a current schedule of Career Center events. d. Browse through these remaining module sheets to learn more about some of the common concerns addressed through career advising.

4 Career Information & Advising Module 2 Making a Career Decision Objectives 1. To help you identify areas that are important to consider in making career choices. 2. To learn and apply the skills involved in career problem-solving and decision making. Below Are Activities to Help You Achieve These Objectives a. Ask a Career Advisor for the What s Involved in Career Choice handout to gain a greater awareness of the career decision-making process. b. Review A Guide to Good Decision Making sheet to explore more effective ways to make career decisions. c. Get started on the Guide to Good Decision-Making exercise with the assistance of a Career Advisor. d. Review materials in the Module 2 folder. f. Complete the Choosing a Major or Occupation workbook with a Career Advisor. g. Register for Units I and II of the Introduction to Career Development Class - SDS A course syllabus is available for your review.

5 Career Information & Advising Module 3 Exploring Your Interests, Values, & skills Objectives To help you examine some 1. of your interests, values, and skills. 2. To help you relate your self-knowledge to occupations, fields of study, or jobs for further exploration. Rationale A critical part of learning how to make career decisions involves looking at yourself and asking: 1. What activities am I interested in? 2. What values do I have that might be an important part of exploring possible occupations, fields of study, or jobs? 3. What skills and abilities do I possess or need to develop? The answers to these I questions are important ones because they provide useful information for making career decisions and solving career problems throughout one s life. This self-knowledge helps us both expand and narrow the options that we are considering at any given point in life. This Module identifies self-assessment activities available to you that may prove to be interesting, fun, and informative. In consultation with a Career Advisor, you may complete any of these activities with respect to your needs. When you have completed the selected activities, you are encouraged to meet with a Career Advisor again to discuss the results of your self-assessment and the implications for your career development.

6 Career Information & Advising Module 3 Exploring Your Interests, Values, & skills Interests 1. Complete the Self-Directed Search (SDS), computer or paper version. 2. Complete the Interest Profiler in the Choices Planner computer system to explore occupations and search for occupational features in the occupations database. You can access the online version of Choices Planner at bridges.com/cpflorida. Select the Jump in option on the left of your screen. 3. Complete the Interest Inventory in the ediscover computer program. Obtain a access code from a Career Advisor. 4. Complete SIGI 3 s Interests Fields survey. To access SIGI 3 online, visit career.fsu.edu/sigi. (See Career Advisor for acess code) 5. Complete the Activities Card Sort with a Career Advisor. 1. Complete SIGI 3 s Values survey. Values 2. Complete the Values Card Sort. 3. Complete the Values Inventory in ediscover. 4. Complete the Work Values Sorter in the Choices Planner system to learn more about your work values and what is important to you in a job or use the search for occupations to identify options based on your General Workplace skills or transferable work skills.

7 Career Information & Advising Module 3 Exploring Your Interests, Values, & skills 1. Complete the Basic Skills Checklist on the Choices Planner. Skills 2. If you have several years of work experience Complete the Transferable Skills Checklist. 3. Complete the Motivated Skills Card Sort. 4. Complete the Abilities Inventory in the ediscover computer program. 5. Complete SIGI 3 s Skills survey. Other Activities Available to You a. Complete the Occupational Card Sort with a Career Advisor b. Complete the College or FSU Majors Card Sort. Discuss with a Career Advisor how the majors you are considering reflect your interests, values, and skills. c. Obtain a Choosing a Major or Occupation guide and explore how your self knowledge relates to options you are considering. d. Register for Units I and II of SDS Introduction to Career Development. A course syllabus is located at career.fsu.edu/courses/sds3340/syllabus.html. e. Attend one of the Career Center s Choosing a Major workshops. f. For help in documenting your transferable skills, create an online Career Portfolio. To get started, go to portfolio.fsu.edu. g. See a Career Advisor to discuss your situation, select appropriate activities for your career concerns, and complete an Individual Learning Plan.

8 Career Information & Advising Module 4 Finding Career Information Objective To help you identify and locate Career Center resources and 1. other information related to your educational, Career Planning, and job hunting needs. Below Are Activities to Help You Achieve This Objective a. Visit the Career Center Library in the Dunlap Success Center (100 S. Woodward Avenue, next to the Student Life Building) b. Perform a search using Career Key (Career Center Library index) for the topic of interest to you. Career information resources are available to you in the following formats: Print: books, periodicals, files Multi-media: CD-Roms, computer systems, Internet resources, videotapes c. Review a diagram (see back) of the Career Center s Library to see the locations of print and multi-media resources in the career library. d. Visit the Career Center Library s home page at: career.fsu.edu/library i. Search the online version of Career Key ii. Browse library links for selected websites e. Visit Secure apps to login to: i. Going Global obtaining international internships and employment ii. Uniworld researching multinational companies iii. SeminoleLink searching for part time, full time, internships and co-ops f. Talk with the librarian, a library assistant, or a Career Advisor about additional information and/or resources that might be helpful for your career planning and job hunting needs.

Below Are Activities to Help You Achieve This Objective a. Review printed materials in the Module 5 folders in the Mobile File, specifically the Match Major handouts; visit the Career Center Web site at career.fsu.edu/occupations/matchmajor/index.html. b. Read sections in these books or others found in section IIC of the Career Center Library. The College Board Book of Majors... IIC AA C7 College Majors & Careers... IIC AA P4 College Majors Handbook... IIC AA F6 c. Perform a search on Career Key under the topic Occupations then, Occupational Information by Program of Study to get a list of relevant Career Center Library resources. Ask a Career Advisor for assistance. d. Use the College Majors Card Sort or FSU Majors Card Sort to find majors and occupational opportunities. Ask a Career Advisor for assistance. e. Review information in the FSU Undergraduate Academic Program Guide online at for various programs of study at FSU. Select description, click on major, and scroll down.

10 Career Information & Advising Module 5 Matching Majors and Jobs f. Use the Dictionary of Holland Occupational Codes (DHOC) (IIA G6). Part 3 links Instructional Program Titles to three-letter Holland Codes. TheseHollandCodescan then be used to find occupations in the DHOC or the Self-Directed Search Occupations Finder. You can also use the Educational Opportunities Finder to locate Holland codes for fields of study which can be compared to codes in the Occupations Finder. g. Use the Search by Major feature in SIGI 3, career.fsu.edu/sigi (ask a Career Advisor for the access code). h. Review selected employer directories that list organizations by major, career, or geographical areas located in section VI of the Career Center Library. Ask a Career Advisor for assistance. i. Consult with Career Center staff member about internship, co-op and job opportunities. j. Check out the Professional Network in SeminoleLink (c areer.fsu.edu/connect) to see what types of positions individuals have entered with their majors. k. Review job notice files, on the countertop near section VI, Opportunities, to see the types of majors required by employers for specific positions.

To describe the projected employment trends in various occupations. 3. To understand the complexity and accuracy of employment forecasting. 4. Its purpose is to spotlight Career Center resources that might be especially useful in this exploration. Objective To identify career planning resources and 1. Perform a search on Career Key in the Diverse Populations menus under Career and Life Planning or Education and Training. b. Review materials on African-Americans, Hispanics, Gays/Lesbians/Bisexuals /Transgendered (GLBT) and older workers in the Module 8 files located in the Mobile File. c. Read occupational files for information on opportunities for diverse populations. d.
