2 Internet of Things Development for the Promotion of Information Economy Project Overseer: Zhang Yanbin Background: The development of IOT is opening up huge opportunities for both economic growth and social progress IOT with huge potential vision The IOT (Internet of Things) represents a vision in which the Internet extends into the real world embracing everyday objects. With deep convergence of cyber and physical worlds, IOT is opening up huge opportunities for both economic growth and social progress. According to IDC, the Internet of things and the technology ecosystem surrounding it are expected to be an $8.9 trillion market in IOT is upgraded to an key strategic As an emerging industry, the technical, industrial and application foundations of the IOT has grown drastically in the Asia Pacific region, and shows glorious visions of future. As the size of the information economy expands, many APEC member economies has upgraded IOT to one of the most important priorities of their innovation strategies. 1

3 Objectives To provide a platform for APEC members to discuss issues related policies and strategies on promoting the development of IOT and its integration with traditional industry to reform and upgrade the economic structure including favourable regulatory policies, technological innovation and standardization and applications development, etc. To analyse the status of IOT development and the important role it plays in promoting information economy in APEC economies, main problems and challenges the economies are facing in promoting IOT for information economy development. To develop recommendations for developing economies, to promote technology and policy capacity building in developing economies in a view to bridge the digital divide and achieve promote both developmental and social benefits in the region. Key Events Timeline Proposal for discussion in TEL51 Phase 1: Project implementation established an expert group on "Internet of Things Development for the Promotion of Information Economy selected contractors coming from Tele info (Beijing Tele info Network Technology co., Ltd.) to carry out the project checked a large number of studies report, carried out in depth investigation Had an interim report for the project on the workshop Phase 2:Workshop Organization and Implementation Invite expert coming from Tele info (Beijing Tele info Network Technology co., Ltd.) to do an interim report for the project. Invited 11 experts coming from Philippines, China, Japan, Brunei, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and USA. They made excellent presentations on the practice of technology, Application, Policy and Industry in their economics. 2

4 Workshop Progress Over 60 APEC delegations attend this workshop. expert from Tele info co make an interim report for the project. Experts coming from Philippines, China, Japan, Institut Teknologi Brunei, Chinese Taipei, Thailand and USA. They will make presentations about IOT. 5 Key conclusions IoT is creating a revolutionary and global information economy that can benefit governments, businesses and individuals, which will also impact and influence all sectors, promoting the upgrade of the traditional industries. There are still many challenges restricting the IoT development in APEC region, such as limitation of infrastructure, industrial barrier, etc. To solve the problems, we should strengthen the regional cooperation, such as establish the sustainable and cohesive policy frameworks that mandate cross border collaboration for all policy, economic and social initiatives. Either giant telecom companies, or traditional companies place IoT to the high level of the companies strategy. To spark IoT business innovation is not easy with any single company, so cooperation is the common way for the companies. Future plans Based on workshop outputs, revise interim report and keep closer cooperation with economics to collect more contributions To share result between all co sponsors and get their comments and suggestions To finish final report and close project on time 4
