1 Project Management Institute Continuing Certification Requirements HANDBOOK This handbook outlines the requirements to maintain the Project Management Professional (PMP ) certification.

2 Certification Program Mission Initiate, establish, evaluate, maintain and administer professional credentialing programs to promote and support project management practitioners and the project management profession. T he Project Management Institute (PMI) sponsors a project management certification program, the purpose and goal of which is the development, maintenance, evaluation, promotion, and administration of a rigorous, examinationbased, professional certification credential of the highest caliber the Project Management Professional (PMP ). The PMP program supports the international community of Project Management Professionals and is designed to objectively assess and measure professional knowledge. PMP program requirements and eligibility standards are applied fairly, impartially, and consistently with applicable laws. The PMP program complies with all USA state and federal government nondiscriminatory statutes and laws, and grants certification independently of a candidate s membership or nonmembership in any organization, association or other group. To achieve PMP certification, candidates must satisfy all educational and experiential requirements established by PMI and must demonstrate an acceptable and valid level of understanding and knowledge of the project management that is tested by the Project Management Professional Certification Examination. In addition, those who have been granted the PMP credential (certificants) must demonstrate ongoing professional commitment to the field of project management by satisfying PMI s Continuing Certification Requirements Program (formerly called the Professional Development Program). This handbook outlines the requirements to maintain PMP Certification. Program Information Updates to the Continuing Certification Requirements Program are posted in the certification area of the PMI Web site. 3 Overview of PMI Continuing Certification Requirements The PMI Continuing Certification Requirements Program (CCR), supports the ongoing professional development of PMI certified Project Management Professionals and the maintenance of PMP Certification. PMPs must accrue a minimum of sixty (60) professional development units (PDU) during each CCR cycle. The first CCR cycle begins on the date of initial certification and expires on 31 December of the third full calendar year after the first year of certification. After that, continuing certification cycles will be in three-year terms starting 1 January of the following year and finishing on 31 December of the third year. For example: A PMP becomes certified on 1 July His/her initial CCR cycle would start on 1 July 2002 and end on 31 December If at that point he/she meets all the requirements to maintain PMP certification, his/her next CCR cycle would begin on 1 January 2006 and end on 31 December PMPs must also comply with the PMI PMP Code of Professional Conduct to maintain certification status. What is a Professional Development Unit (PDU)? The PDU is the measuring unit used to quantify approved learning and professional service activities. Typically, one PDU is earned for every one hour spent in a planned, structured learning experience or activity. Fractions of PDUs may be reported in 0.25 increments following one full hour. For conversion purposes, one Continuing Education Unit (CEU) equals 10 PDUs. PDUs are organized into five categories. Descriptions of the categories can be found on pages 4 and 5 of this handbook. How are CCR Activities Reported? PMPs are responsible for reporting qualifying activities as they occur. They should make copies of the PMI Continuing Certification Requirements Activity Reporting Form, enter the required information, and fax or mail the completed form (only the form) to the PMI/CCR Records Office. CCR Activity Reporting Forms may also be submitted using the online Activity Reporting Form found in the certification area of the PMI Web site. Transcripts of activities will be mailed to PMPs on an annual basis. PMPs may also view their transcripts online via the PMI Web site. Transferring Excess PDUs to the Next CCR Cycle Up to 20 excess PDUs earned during the final (third) year of the current CCR cycle may be applied to the next CCR cycle. PDU Credit Distribution There are no minimum requirements for the number of PDUs earned in any specific category. PMPs may accomplish their PDUs through any combination of the various categories with the following restrictions: Self-directed Learning activities (Category 2 - SDL) are limited to a maximum of 15 PDUs per CCR cycle; Category 5 activities are limited to 20 PDUs per CCR cycle. Maintaining a Continuing Certification Requirements Folder All PMPs should maintain a personal CCR folder with documentation that supports reported activities. A percentage of PMPs will be randomly selected for auditing purposes each year; therefore, documentation should be maintained for at least 12 months after the CCR cycle has ended. For specific documentation requirements, refer to the following categories of qualifying activities. What Happens After Continuing Certification Requirements Are Met? After satisfying the 60 PDU requirement for the CCR, PMPs will be sent an Application for Certification Renewal. This application will automatically be mailed to PMPs during the final six months of their current CCR cycle. An updated certificate package will be sent out upon PMI s receipt of the completed Application for Certification Renewal. Failure to Satisfy Continuing Certification Requirements PMPs who fail to satisfy the continuing certification requirements prior to the conclusion of their cycle have 12 months from the cycle expiration to do so. PMI will suspend and/or revoke the certification of a PMP not satisfying the program requirements. Processing Fee Effective 1 January 2004, PMI will implement a processing fee for certification renewal. Renewing PMPs will be charged this fee once during each Continuing Certification Requirements Cycle. Payment will be required with submission of the Application for Certification Renewal after a PMP has completed their PDUs. The amount of the certification renewal processing fee will be announced at a later date. 3 Continuing Certification Requirements Program

4 PDU Qualifying Activities Category 1: Formal Academic Education PDUs may be earned by completing an academic course after PMP certification. Courses must be offered for degree credit and be related to project management. One (1) hour of degree credit in a typical 15-week semester earns 15 PDUs. One (1) quarter semester hour earns 10 PDUs. When only a portion of a course relates to project management, PDUs are calculated on a percentage of the overall curriculum focused on project management. Each course must be submitted on a separate CCR Activity Reporting Form. Documentation Required: PMPs should maintain a transcript or grade report indicating a passing mark. Category 2: Professional Activities and Self-directed Learning A predetermined number of PDUs may be earned by participating in specified professional activities. Use the Guide to Category 2 Activities that follows to determine PDUs in this category. Additional guidelines can be found on the PMI Web site or requested from the PMI/CCR Records office. One (1) PDU may be earned for each documented hour of self-directed learning that enhances project management knowledge or skills. A maximum of 15 PDUs per CCR cycle may be earned through participating in appropriate self-directed learning activities.* Documentation Required: PMPs should maintain copies of publications, sample educational materials or program agendas. * When claiming self-directed learning PDUs, PMPs should submit the Self-directed Learning Activities worksheet in addition to the Activity Reporting Form. 5 PDUs for Self-directed Learning Activities ACTIVITY PDU VALUE SUBDESIGNATIONS 2 SDL Self-directed learning activities are individualized learning projects involving personally conducted research or study. Learning may include informal activities such as discussions or coaching sessions with colleagues, co-workers, clients or consultants. It may include articles, books, instructional manuals, videos, CD-ROMs, or other material resources. Qualifying self-directed learning activities must be relevant to project management, meet a specified purpose, and use knowledgeable resources. Use the Self-directed Learning Activities Worksheet on the tear-off page to determine PDUs for Category 2 Self-directed Learning. Include the worksheet with the CCR Activity Reporting Form. Maximum of 15 Self-directed Learning PDUs may be earned per CCR cycle. Required documentation: If audited, PMPs should be able to provide evidence supporting their reported learning project. This may include notes from and dates of discussions or reading. Category 3: PMI Registered Education Providers PDUs may be earned by attending educational programs offered by educational organizations registered with PMI and designated as PMI Registered Education Providers. These providers adhere to quality criteria established by PMI and are solely authorized to issue PDU certificates to attendees. They can be identified by the Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) logo: Examples include schools, consultants, corporate training departments, professional associations, government agencies and PMI Chapters and Specific Interest Groups (SIGs). A database of registered providers and the programs they offer is posted on the PMI Web site. Programs may be searched according to subject area, location, date and time. Documentation Required: PMPs should maintain a registration form, certificate or letter of attendance. Category 4: Other Provider PDUs may also be earned by attending relevant educational programs offered by organizations not registered with PMI. To calculate the number of PDUs earned, use the following formula: one (1) contact hour of learning relevant to project management within a structured activity or course equals one (1) PDU. Documentation Required: PMPs should maintain registration form, certificate or letter of attendance, and a brochure or course materials indicating the subject matter covered and the qualifications of the instructor or content expert. 5 Continuing Certification Requirements Program

Two PDUs per calendar year. (No PDUs are awarded for service less than three months.) - Minimum six months of participation. Five PDUs per calendar year. - Twelve months of participation. Ten PDUs per calendar year. Serve as a committee member for a project management organization. - Minimum three months of participation. One PDU per calendar year. (No PDUs are awarded for service less than three months.) - Minimum six months of participation. Three PDUs per calendar year. - Twelve months of participation. Five PDUs per calendar year. Provide project management related services to a community or charitable group (5 PDUs per year). Documentation Required: PMPs should maintain letter or certificate from the organization served acknowledging participation of the PMP. Reporting Instructions PMPs may file PDU claims online via the CCR Activity Reporting Form on the PMI Web site. Submitting PDUs online is quick, easy and convenient, and expedites processing. The CCR Activity Reporting Form (provided in this handbook) may also be used to report activities qualifying for PDUs. Effective 1 January 2003, if PMPs choose not to submit PDUs online, this will be the only official Activity Reporting Form accepted by PMI/CCR Records. Any previous versions of this form, or any altered versions of this form, will be returned to the sender after this date. Please make copies of the form as needed. Submit a separate form for each qualifying activity. Fill out the form completely and send to PMI/CCR Records, College of Continuing Education, 1700 Asp Avenue, Norman, Oklahoma USA , or fax to Forms will be returned for incompleteness if mandatory information has not been provided.
