6 AFTER DELIVERY At St. Francis Medical Center our after delivery care for stable newborns includes: SKIN to SKIN care Babies are placed skin to skin with the mother after delivery (if the parents are willing and baby stable) regardless of feeding choice. The goal is for the baby to remain skin to skin until the first breastfeeding or for the first hour. Skin to Skin enhances stabilization of the baby s vital signs, temperature and promotes breast-feeding behaviors. Newborn care, including the bath, will be done in the mother s room after one hour of age. If you choose, visitors can be restricted so parents and newborn can enjoy a private golden hour after delivery to become acquainted. ROOMING IN After birth, stable babies remain with their parents in the mother s hospital room. Rooming In gives parents the opportunity to learn and respond to feeding cues and become comfortable with infant care prior to going home.
