4 Frequently Asked Questions When and how should I register? You can the fall semester now through the first day of class. What courses should I take? All of our programs have core courses. We highly recommend that you complete these courses before you take electives. Taking English, history, and other general education courses will benefit you more if you complete them early in your program. Also, remember to sequence your coursework appropriately by taking introductions and surveys of a discipline before taking more intensive studies of a subject. Most courses do not have pre-requisites, but some do. So make sure to check the catalog descriptions for those. As always, your Office of Academic Advising can help you decide which courses are right for you each semester. Contact them if you have any questions at AAO@lutherrice.edu or We recommend that you start out slowly with one or two courses, and see how well you can handle the extra load in your particular situation in life. A full-time load for undergraduate students is 12 hours; for graduate students, it is 9 hours. Will the published schedule change? The schedule is subject to change. However, we will do our best to keep the classes that we have listed. The most likely changes that could take place are changing the assigned professors and adding courses. Who do I talk to if I have a problem? Please talk first to an Academic Advisor. Our Academic Advisors are trained, prepared, and eager to help you succeed in school. have issues that an advisor cannot resolve, please contact the Office of Student Development. How many courses should I attempt in a semester? Since most of our students are adult learners, they have many responsibilities outside of school: full-time employment, church ministry, children at home, and aging parents. These responsibilities sometimes conflict with the effort to complete a program of study, which requires a significant amount of work. Some students, eager to complete their degree as soon as possible, load up on courses only to later find that they must drop some of them because of life circumstances, or they realize that they overestimated their ability and availability. While our online program is quite flexible and allows you to complete your degree from home, there are typically coursework deadlines each week that require you diligence. June 8, 2015 Page 4

11 BACHELOR OF ARTS IN RELIGION: QUICK FACTS Summary: The Bachelor of Arts in Religion has undergone several changes for the year. Below is a quick reference to help students in the older BAR navigate these changes, and answer questions regarding the impact that this has on their current status sheet. New Program Layout for Students Accepted After July 1, 2014: June 8, 2015 Page 11

12 The new BAR has five distinct sections: General Education; Christian Service Preparation; Major in Biblical Studies; three Minor Options (Biblical Counseling, Christian Worldview, and Ministry); and General Electives. This degree is slightly different than past BAR programs. The General Education section is now standardized. In addition, a 9 hour section entitled Christian Service Preparation has been added to help students focus on the application of the ministry tools they acquire throughout the program. The Major in Biblical Studies section has been expanded from 39 hours to 42 hours in order to provide wider exposure to various Old Testament and New Testament book studies. Also, each Minor section has been reduced from 18 hours to 15 hours. Finally, the General Electives section has been reduced from 24 hours to 18 hours. The changes to the Minor and General Elective sections were necessary in order to accommodate the standardized General Education, and expansion of the Major in Biblical Studies. You will notice that EV 3402: Personal Evangelism has been moved from the Major in Biblical Studies section, to the Christian Service Preparation section. Furthermore, EV 203: Spiritual Formation has been combined with MP 100: Preparing for Ministry to create a 3 credit hour course entitled MP 1401: Preparing for Christian Service. You will also notice that RW 100: Introduction to Research and Writing has been removed as a requirement. Instead, each student entering to this program without transferable credit will be required to complete EN 1101: English Composition I in their first semester, and EN 1102: English Composition II in their second semester. have not completed this requirement for your status sheet, the requirement for RW 100 will be waived. Course Numbering Changes: The course numbering for the BAR has also changed. The old nomenclature included a discipline prefix (e.g., NT=New Testament) and a three digit number that identified the individual course (e.g., NT 102=New Testament Survey). The new nomenclature includes a discipline prefix, but has adjusted the prefix to better fit the discipline (e.g., SO 201: Principles of Psychology (old) vs. PY 2703: Principles of Psychology (new)). The new nomenclature also includes a four digit number that identifies the suggested year, discipline, and sequence of courses (e.g., NT 1200).
