The rganizatinal types used within this reprt are derived frm the Natinal Emergency Medical Services Infrmatin System (NEMSIS). Ttal Incidents is defined as the ttal number f EMS events that were submitted by each licensed EMS prvider. Ttal Patient Cntacts is defined as the ttal numbers f patients that are respnded t by each licensed EMS prvider. Ttal Transprts is defined as the ttal number f times that an EMS unit respnded t an EMS event that resulted in a patient being transprted t destinatin. All three databases are maintained by the Flrida Department f Health. General Infrmatin The term call vlume can be used in many different ways thrughut the state and cuntry. Fr the purpses f this reprt, it was determined t separate the term call vlume int three separate categries. The terms Incident Vlume, Patient Cntact Vlume, and Transprt Vlume were elected t be used with this reprt. The terms ttal incidents and ttal patient cntacts are nt synnymus. The term ttal incidents indicate the ttal number f distinct incidents that are reprted by EMS prviders; a single adverse event (such as a multivehicle cllisin) can be reprted as multiple incidents, by a single EMS agency that dispatches mre than ne respnding vehicle r by multiple agencies respnding t the same event. Ttal patient cntacts indicate the ttal number f patients that are respnded t by each licensed EMS prvider. Fr each service that submitted data t EMSTARS fr all f 2013, Ttal Incidents are all unique cmbinatins f Unit Ntified by Dispatch Date/Time, EMS Unit Call Sign, and Incident Number. Within this set f incidents, patient encunters are all incidents in which the Incident/Patient Dispsitin is nt Cancelled, N Patient Fund, r Cancelled n Scene N Patient Cntact. Transprts are all incidents fr which the Incident/Patient Dispsitin is Treated, Transprted by EMS. Althugh EMSTARS accepts self-reprted call vlumes frm each agency that submits infrmatin t EMSTARS, the bureau calculated call vlumes fr each agency directly frm the recrds submitted t EMSTARS fr 2013 (as described n page 3); this is the same methdlgy used t prduce the 2011 and 2012 reprt. There were 271 EMS agencies fund in COMPAS and reprting t the pre-hspital Aggregate database r EMSTARS at sme pint during 2013; this includes in-state and ut-f-state agencies. 8 Organizatinal Type by EMS Transprt Type The fllwing table describes rganizatinal types fr the 271 licensed EMS prviders in 2013 (This number includes prviders that ceased business r were licensed fr the first time during the year. Change in wnership results in a change in license number; each license number is cunted separately.), including eight prviders licensed ut-f-state. Fire-based EMS prviders make up ver half f the EMS prviders in Flrida, with private nn-hspital EMS prviders being the secnd mst numerus rganizatinal type. Thirty-seven percent (37%) f private nn-hspital prviders are air prviders. Fire-based EMS prviders make up the majrity (95%) f all the Advanced Life Supprt Nn-Transprt (ALS/N) type f EMS in the state.
