1 Small WEEE collections checklist: Approved Authorised Treatment Facilities Y/N ANY OTHER COMMENTS Local Authorities Have you identified the main points of contact within the authority? Such as: Waste Management Dept, Recycling/ Sustainability Officers, PR Officers, School Advisors, Council Members. Schools Have potentially interested schools been identified? Local Authority personnel such as recycling officers and school advisors may be able to assist with this. Have the plans/proposals been agreed by the school senior management team? This should be done well in advance at least 2 weeks before the event. Is the school working towards an Eco/Recycling Award such as Eco Schools. Some schemes or initiatives may have regional officers who can offer support. Who are the main points of contact within the school? Head teacher, site manager/ caretaker, class teacher or the relevant subject coordinator? What is the best way of communicating with the schools/staff? Some schools for example, may prefer to receive hard copies of relevant information rather than receive it via . forward page

Such as: marketing and communications personnel. Third Sector Organisations Have you informed/involved local reuse and recycling groups? Retailers Have you identified the main points of contact within the organisation? Such as: marketing and communications personnel or corporate social responsibility managers. Generally Is everyone involved in the planning process aware of their roles and responsibilities? page 2
3 Who needs to grant permission - school, Local Authority, car park owner? 6 Will you be collecting hazardous WEEE such as CRT monitors and TVs? Check that registration to be a hazardous waste producer is in place and that a hazardous waste consignment note has been obtained (in order to be able to move it). 6 For relevant information on hazardous waste and legislation visit Storing WEEE How long will the containers be on-site? All containers have to be secure. For information relating to the temporary storage of waste at a collection point visit permitting/706.aspx Is there adequate space for the containers? The total quantity of WEEE stored at any one time must not exceed 0 cubic metres and hazardous waste such as CRTs, monitors and TVs needs to be separated from other WEEE. Can the containers be safely removed and replaced during the collection day if necessary? Parking and dropping off Parking and dropping off Is there adequate space for vans and parking? 6 Is there enough space for a one-way system for traffic coming in and out? 6 Can queuing cars be accommodated? 6 Are entrances and exits for vehicles and pedestrians clearly marked? secure container means a container is secure in relation to waste kept in it if all reasonable precautions are taken to ensure that the waste cannot escape from it and members of the public are unable to gain access to the waste. page
4 When will your event take place? If you use a school site the arrival and departure of school buses and transport either end of the school day needs to be accommodated. 6 Has a health and safety/risk assessment of the site been carried out? A pre-visit by the AATF/ATF is recommended. SUPPORTING RESOURCE AVAILABLE* Is the collection point easy to find? Legal requirements Will you be collecting hazardous WEEE such as CRT monitors and TVs? Check that registration to be a hazardous waste producer is in place and that a hazardous waste consignment note has been obtained (in order to be able to move it). Have the adults assisting with the day been recently CRB checked? Check schools and/or Local Authorities to find out what their policy is. 6 For relevant information on hazardous waste and legislation visit Check with your local Environment Agency Officer that you have all the required documentation. Is appropriate public liability insurance in place? Promoting your event pre collection SUPPORTING RESOURCE AVAILABLE* Are there any manufacturers/retailers who might be interested in sponsoring your marketing and publicity materials? 6 page 4
5 Have you identified opportunities for free advertising such as parish magazines, community and council newsletters, free newspapers and partners magazines and newsletters? Will you be placing posters in places of high footfall? Such as: libraries, leisure centres, council offices, surgeries and waiting rooms. Is the school able to assist with promoting the event? Such as: parents newsletters, social media, the school website. Would they be willing for any of the partners to give presentations during a school assembly? Are any of the teachers able to make use of the curriculum materials? SUPPORTING RESOURCE AVAILABLE* Who will undertake delivery of leaflets? Managing the collection day SUPPORTING RESOURCE AVAILABLE* Will you just be recycling items or also accepting items for reuse? If the latter, will PAT testing facilities be available? Will you be supporting the day with satellite collections from other locations nearby such as primary schools? How will this be managed? 6 6 Is it clear what you will/won t be collecting? Will you be conducting any surveys or questionnaires? Many schools have school/eco councils and would see this as a valuable opportunity for pupils to get more involved. Will there be visiting dignitaries? Are there any official protocols that need to be put in place? page 5
6 Is everyone involved in the day aware of their roles and responsibilities? Who is ultimately responsible for health and safety? Security? Hazardous WEEE must be segregated. How will you segregate such items? Is it clear what you can and can t accept? Will there be anyone to assist members of the public with bulky items if you are collecting them? Are the entrances and exits clearly marked? Is there a traffic management plan? Do you intend to have displays and leaflets? Are refreshments being provided for those assisting with the day? Is there a contingency plan for adverse weather conditions? Shelter/shade for those assisting? PR on the day? How will this be managed and who will be responsible for managing this? Celebrating success SUPPORTING RESOURCE AVAILABLE* Will you be circulating the collection data after the event? Schools can make good use of this kind of information, which adds to the educational value and potential impact of the event. page 6
7 Will you be preparing a press release and/or inviting the press to attend the event? Have photo permission forms been completed? This is especially important if pupils are involved. Check what the school/local Authorities policy is on the use of any images. Help to inform the bigger picture by sending WRAP your comments, photos and feedback. Possible cost implications Leaflets and fliers Postage Time for an individual or organisation to oversee and coordinate the event.
