Transcription
1 College of Communications Scholarships listed present a selection of those awarded by sponsoring organizations in conjunction with the College of Communications faculty. In addition, communications majors can apply for a wide range of scholarships and awards offered by a host of outside private organizations and professional societies. Information about scholarships and awards is located on the bulletin boards on the fourth floor of College Park. Note: For all scholarships, the notification process does not include a notification to all applicants but only to the selected recipient of the scholarship. The expected date of notification is by the end of May. Alumni Association Scholarship for Communications Majors Amount: $500 (two awards given) Established by: This scholarship was established to encourage co-curricular involvement and to promote service, academic achievement, and leadership in the college. Funding is provided by the College of Communications in partnership with the Cal State Fullerton Alumni Association. Two scholarship recipients will be selected and must serve in two or more leadership areas during the next academic year: 1) hold a top-level position in a major campus activity, 2) serve on the SOAR-Interclub Council, 3) Serve as an officer in a student club, or 4) serve as an ambassador for department/college events. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing full-time students in Communication, Radio-TV- Film, or Human Communication Studies who are pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate degree. Criteria: Full-time Academic achievement Good academic standing Leadership Extracurricular activities answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Submit an unofficial transcript and a Titan Degree Audit, available from TITAN Online; 3) Prepare a statement indicating pertinent school and community activities that illustrate your leadership potential; and 4) Submit application materials to CP-450. Bergstrom Family Scholarship Endowment Amount: $1,000 Established by: This endowed scholarship was created by Richard Bergstrom on behalf of the Bergstrom Family to support students with financial need who have overcome significant challenges while pursuing their degree.
2 Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a major or minor in the College of Communications (any of the three departments HCOM, RTVF, and Communications). Criteria: 2.5 GPA full-time enrollment financial need One-page essay answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA), or have one on file, for establishing financial aid 2) Include any hardship or challenges in the question portion of the online application which are relevant to this scholarship; 3) Submit application materials to the College of Communications Assistant Dean, College Park 450. Application Deadline: March 25 Christine Renée Côté Scholarship Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was established by family and friends In memory of Christine Renée Côté who graduated with a degree in Communications in Journalism and was enrolled as a master student in Human Communication Studies. She fought a six-year battle with cancer, but never lost her spirit and hope in her well-fought journey. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing students in the College of Communications. Criteria: 2.5 overall GPA Major or minor in one of the three departments in the College of Communications Generosity of spirit One-page essay Application Procedure: 1) Complete the application 2) Provide copy of your unofficial transcripts;3) Write an essay why you think you would be a good representative for Christine s scholarship;4) Submit completed application materials to Dr. Irene Matz, CP 450. Application Deadline: March 25 Carli Christina Cummings Scholarship Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship is named for Carli Christina Cummings, in her memory, by Dr. Irene Matz (Carli s Aunt), to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance. Carli Christina Cummings from Erie, Pennsylvania, was tragically taken from life at age 15 in a car accident. Carli was a competitive swimmer and was the recipient of numerous awards, most recently the NISCA State Top 16 Award for the 400 Freestyle Relay and the Varsity Athletic Award for Swimming at
3 McDowell High School. Carli s hobbies included water polo, dancing, journal writing, photography, gymnastics, snowboarding, and boating. This entry was taken from one of Cali s journal writings: Everyone s life is a journey. It is a journey, a ride, and an obstacle. Everyone hits a bump in the road and everyone makes a wrong turn. But when mistakes are made, they are not meant to be rewound and started over. You are meant to learn from the mistakes and use your newfound knowledge in the future. Open to: This scholarship is open to students who are pursuing a major or minor in the College of Communications (any of the three departments HCOM, RTVF, and Communications). Application Deadline: March 25 The George Fagin Memorial Scholarship Amount: Varies Established by: This scholarship was established anonymously in memory of George Fagin, an employee on the CSUF campus. Through his daily walk in College Park, he made a great impact on many individuals. His years of service provided a safe and secure environment for faculty, staff and students. In 2012, Mr. Fagin received a CSUF commendation for his excellent service. The scholarship is to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance and/or have participated in community service. Open to: This scholarship is open to CSUF students affiliated with the College of Communications and the College of Education. Criteria: Enrolled undergraduates, graduate students and credential students Financial Need and/or Community Service Activities 2.5 GPA A written essay Application Procedure: 1) Complete the SA application, answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification and obtain an application online at 2) Write a brief essay describing your understanding of the importance of giving back. At the bottom of the essay include the signature and contact information of a person who can verify your financial need and/or community service; and 3) Submit your application and other materials to the College of Communications Assistant Dean, College Park 450. 4 Amount: $1000 (multiple awards given) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Professor Emeriti. Dr. Maxwell. One of his most significant accomplishments was founding the Department of Communications at Cal State Fullerton. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in Communications or RTVF to assist them in meeting educational expenses. Criteria: Financial need 2.5 GPA Good academic standing Extra-curricular activities involvement Department service or participation Full time enrollment the certification; 2) Write a personal statement of achievement describing in brief the challenges you have faced to get your degree; and 3) Submit application materials to CP-450. Communications Advertising Internship Scholarship Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was established and funded through donations from various student Advertising competitions. Open to: This scholarship is open to CSUF undergraduate students in the Department of Communications advertising concentration. Students must be enrolled in COMM495T in the spring semester or summer session and working in an unpaid internship. Criteria: Good academic standing Advertising concentration Unpaid internship answer all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Write a one page essay about your responsibilities/plans/accomplishments during the internship period, your career goals, and how you will use what you have learned at CSUF to impact the industry; 3) Submit completed application materials to CP 400. James Alexander Scholarship Amount: $1000
5 Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Professor Emeriti, James Alexander, to recognize and honor students who have demonstrated strong academic performance and been actively involved in his/her high school newspaper, yearbook or magazine production. The applicant is required to write a 225-word essay describing their high school writing experience and their career goals as well as providing a sample of a published story, article, or photo from a high school publication. Open to: This scholarship is open to freshman and sophomore students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree from the Department of Communications. Criteria: 2.85 GPA Full-time Quality of writing sample answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; 2) Obtain a departmental application from CP 450; 3) Provide one letter of recommendation from a high school faculty member; 4) Write a essay no more than 225 words describing your high school writing experience and your career goals; 5) Attach a sample of your work that has been published; 6) Submit application materials to CP-400. Myles Atlas Memorial Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Rhonda Atlas Garside, widow of Myles Atlas, in memory of her husband s long and successful career in the advertising business. Open to: This scholarship is open to sophomore, junior, or senior Communications majors in the advertising concentration. Criteria: Career interest in advertising management or media buying answering all 7 questions, and sign the certification; and 2) Submit application materials to the Communications Department, CP-400. Jay Berman Daily Titan Scholarship Amount: $1000 Established by: This endowed scholarship was established by former students, family and friends of Jay Berman, Daily Titan adviser from , to recognize a student journalist who has made significant contributions to the Daily Titan. The scholarship will be awarded based on outstanding performance and writing for the Daily Titan campus student newspaper.
6 Open to: This scholarship is open to junior or senior Communication majors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton. Criteria: 2.5 GPA Quality of published work answer all 7 questions and sign the certification; 2) Attach at least one example of your published work from the Daily Titan; 3) Submit a letter of reference from the adviser of the Daily Titan; and 4) Submit application materials to CP-400. DGWB Advertising Scholarship Amount: $2500 Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by DGWB Advertising in Santa Ana to recognize and honor a student in the advertising concentration that demonstrates financial need. Open to: This scholarship is open to enrolled undergraduate students in the Department of Communications in the Advertising concentration. Criteria: Financial need Good academic standing the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or have one on file, for establishing financial need; 3) Submit completed application materials to CP-400. Gary Granville Memorial Scholarship Amount: $1000 Established by: This scholarship was established by former students, family and friends of the late Gary Granville, lecturer and Daily Titan adviser, to recognize a student who has made significant contributions to the Daily Titan. The scholarship will be awarded based on your outstanding performance as an editor or as a staff reporter on the Daily Titan campus student newspaper. Open to: This scholarship is open to junior or senior Communication majors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton. Criteria: 2.5 GPA Quality of published work answer all 7 questions and sign the
7 certification; 2) Attach at least one example of your published work from the Daily Titan; 3) Submit a letter of reference from the adviser of the Daily Titan; and 4) Submit application materials to CP-400. Alfred and Louise Hewitt Journalism Fund Amount: $1000 Established by: This scholarship was established by Mr. Stephen Hewitt in memory of his parents, Alfred and Louise Hewitt. Mr. Alfred Hewitt was passionate about journalism and this scholarship will celebrate his witty journalistic soul. In the tradition of his humor and teaching style, this scholarship is being established in his name to honor students who carry on his writing style and approach to journalism. Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students majoring in Communications with an emphasis in Journalism. Criteria: 3.25 GPA Financial need Excellent journalistic writing skills with an open minded viewpoint Dedicated to the journalism profession High ethical standards Leadership skills the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or have one on file, for establishing financial need; 3) Attach a writing sample; and 4) Submit completed application materials to CP-400. Terry Hynes Scholarship Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was endowed by Terry Hynes, former chair of CSUF s Department of Communications and currently assistant vice president of the Office of University Relations at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Open to: This scholarship is open to Communication majors who will be seniors with at least one semester enrollment remaining at Cal State Fullerton. Criteria: Outstanding academic performance Contributions to the communications department the certification; and 2) Submit application materials to the Communications Department, room CP-400.
8 David Little Scholarship Amount: $500 Established by: This scholarship was established to recognize and honor students with good academic credentials who are in need of financial assistance. Open to: This scholarship is open to enrolled students interested in a career in advertising management or media buying. Criteria: Academic achievement Financial need the certification; 2) Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or have one on file, for establishing financial need; and 3) Submit application materials to the Communications Department, CP V.J. Lovero Photojournalism Scholarship Amount: $1,000 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to assist in educating students who have demonstrated career promise in photography. The scholarship honors the memory of renowned sports photographer V.J. Lovero. Applicants must be enrolled for at least one semester during the next academic year and they must demonstrate professional promise. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing Photo Communications majors. Criteria: Quality of portfolio the certification; 2) Submit a portfolio of ten images on a CD that includes sports and portrait photography, and demonstrates your passion for a specific subject, sports or otherwise; and 3) Submit completed application and portfolio to room CP-450. The J. William Maxwell International Travel Scholarship Amount: Varies (multiple awards given)
9 Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by Professor Emeriti Dr. Maxwell, founding chair of the Department of Communications. Professor Maxwell traveled the world during his lifetime and was interested in international communications. Open to: This scholarship is open to continuing students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Communications and will be enrolled in a university sanctioned summer, fall, spring semester or academic year study abroad program to assist them in meeting educational and travel expenses. Criteria: Good academic standing. the certification; 2) Write a personal statement discussing the study abroad program in which you will be participating and how this scholarship will help you; 3) Submit application materials to department of communications office, CP ) Travel award will be generated upon receipt of study abroad program acceptance letter and tuition payment verification must be submitted to the department office. Applications Deadline: Rolling (monthly review process) Miven Venture Partners Amount: $1,000 Established by: This scholarship was established by the Tsao Family Foundation and Miven Venture Partners to support students in need of financial assistance. Applicants must prepare a two part project (can be from a class project) consisting of: 1) 60% articulating brand strategy and 2) 40% to communicate the tag line. Selection will be based on what is distinctive or unique about the project and how well the reader understands the conceptualization of the brand. Other consideration is how well the tag line is promoted aside from an ad campaign. Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate students majoring in Advertising. 10 Amount: $1000 Established by: This scholarship was established in memory of Tom Pasqua, a journalism professor at Southwestern College in Chula Vista and in the Cal State Fullerton Communications Department during the 1970 s. Open to: This scholarship is open to community college transfer students majoring in journalism. Criteria: 2.75 GPA Good academic credentials Demonstrated record of involvement in journalism activities the certification; and 2) Submit application materials to the Communications Department, room CP-400. The Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship Amount: $700 Established by: This scholarship was endowed by the Orange County Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Open to: This scholarship is open to sophomore or junior Communication majors in print, visual or broadcast Journalism who are pursuing an undergraduate degree. Criteria: Academic achievement Experience in journalism activities the certification; and 2) Submit application materials to the Communications Department, room CP-400. OCVA Rick Pullen Scholarship Fund Amount: $3,500 Established by: The Orange County Visitors Association has establish this scholarship in honor of Rick Pullen, who served as the dean of the college for 15 years. Dean Pullen was an advocate for the Center for Entertainment and Tourism in the College of Communications and has served as a board member of the Orange County Tourism Council. The recipient will be presented with the award at the Orange County Tourism Symposium during spring semester.

Barbara K. Rickard-Riegle Broadcast Journalism Fund Amount: $1000 Established by: This scholarship is named for Barbara K. Rickard-Riegle in her memory, to support the efforts of students who are in need of financial assistance who are majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Open to: This scholarship is open to new and continuing Communications students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism. Must be a citizen of the United States. Booth, Seth Fessenden, and Phillip J. Schreiner Amount: $1000 varies (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship is named for Herbert Booth, a former professor of speech communication, Seth Fessenden, a founding member of the Human Communication Studies Department, and Phillip J. Schreiner, former professor of human communication studies and first director of the university s Faculty Development Center. The scholarship is awarded annually to recognize scholastic achievement and contributions to the department. Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students, who will use the award for graduate study in communication studies (CTP) or communicative disorders (CD).

Flocken to recognize and honor outstanding graduate students in Human Communication Studies. Gift: This award is intended to provide support for students who demonstrate academic achievement and have attained an excellent level of communication skills. The winners of the award should be articulate spokespersons who have demonstrated excellent critical thinking, analytical, and leadership skills that are associated with professional competence. Open to: This award is open to seniors pursuing a graduate degree and/or continuing graduate students in Human Communication Studies who are enrolled in a minimum of six units of study. It is awarded to recognize achievement in forensics activities. Open to: This scholarship is open to undergraduate or graduate students who have been actively involved in forensics. Open to: This scholarship is open to graduate students in the Department of Human Communication Studies with an emphasis in intercultural communication. Criteria: 3.5 GPA Strong emphasis or research in intercultural communication Application Procedure: The online application will be available January 26. He was highly valued and respected by students, faculty, administrators, and staff. This scholarship is established by the Rich Wiseman family and friends. Stan Spero Radio Broadcasting Award Amount: $500 (dependent upon funding) Established by: This scholarship was established and funded by the Southern California Broadcasters Association to provide scholarships for students in the field of Radio Broadcast Communications. The scholarship is named for Stan Spero who broke into radio in 1951 as a salesman for KFAC/L.A. Moving on two years later to Gene Autry s KMPC 710/L.A., he spent the next forty-two years as salesman, General Sales Manager, Vice President & General Manager and later, Senior Sports Consultant to KMPC (and
18 later, KABC.) As GSM, Stan was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers to L.A., and when the station lost the broadcast rights to that team, he played a key role in establishing the new, Autry-owned expansion team Angels baseball, selling full sponsorship on KMPC and a regional radio network. A devoted sports fan, Spero also brought USC football and basketball to the highly popular station of the stars. Stan passed away at the age of 86. Open to: Preference will be given to students who are majoring in Radio Broadcast Communications. Selection of the scholarship recipient will not be based solely on GPA, but may also be based on other factors such as commitment to and promise in broadcasting, service to the school and community, or other criteria that the faculty or scholarship committee considers appropriate. Selection will be made without regard for race, color, national origin, age or sex of candidate. No employees of the SCBA, or employees of the Foundation, shall be eligible for such scholarship. Scholarship grants will be awarded annually.
