Welcome Introductions- Kurt introduced himself, explained the reasons for the meeting, the mission of our program, asked people to sign in, asked for updated contact information, talked about future advisory meetings.

2 2. Review of minutes, a. Copies of the last advisory meeting minutes (October 9, 2014) were provided to all. The minutes were reviewed. b. Corrections requested. i. Roy Dorals name was misspelled in 2 places. c. Ron Bridges motioned to accept the minutes with corrections, Kevin Hinckley seconded the motion. All approved the minutes. d. Kurt asked everyone to introduce themselves and what they did for a living one at a time. Everyone did so. Kirsten Lima introduced herself as the new Dean of Applied Technology and Business, gave her background with CTE. e. Kurt talked about High School Programs coming back. Importance of these programs feeding college. 3. Budget a. Kurt talked about past and present budgets, Grants, etc. b. What we can use the grant money for. c. Hybrid grant, alternative fuels, now a part of our degree. d. A hybrid/alternate grant purchased a 2012 Honda CNG and a VW TDI, which are imbedded in our Hybrid class and use in the other courses as well. e. Ways that we fight for funding, how important the advisory committee can be as an ally if we need to fight for funding. 4. Pathways a. Critical to get people from high school to us b. Major funding source for us c. Helps to transition from High School to College d. Grants to help with pathways e. As a student advances through the program they can achieve certificates f. They can earn various certificates while working for their degrees g. Importance of certificates and degrees were discussed ask a way to tell perspective employers that our students are committed. h. Contextualized learning, applied learning, math for a purpose, writing repair orders, stories, etc. i. Important for our students. j. Continuing to add more degrees and certificates k. Some schools are talking about adding a Bachelor s Degree. 5. Articulation a. In March they had a big articulation meeting for the high schools, we couldn t make it. b. We have articulation with Mission Valley ROP and Eden ROP. c. We are going to ask Kristin to help us. Our sister college Los Positas has a class similar to our ATEC50 that Chabot doesn t recognize. We have tried to tell Admissions they are the same class, if they have taken it at LPC it will work for our pre-requisite as well. We are hoping that Kristin can push it through so the process will be easier for our students. d. Mike Sherburne has been donating a lot of his Fridays to go to the High School classes

3 e. We have funds if the high schools would like to come visit us. f. We continuously have tours coming through the auto shop, people are very interested in what we are doing. g. They recognize the computers and scan tools but didn t realize that we were so heavy into computer usage for automotive. h. Last semester we started surveying the students in all of the classes to see where they came from. i. In 2014 we found; 4% attended high school outside the US 67% graduated High School less than 5 years ago 28% graduated high school more than 5 years ago 31% did some sort of high school Rop or took automotive classes 9% Eden Area ROP 15% Mission Valley ROP (Mission includes Washington, Logan and Kennedy High Schools) San Leandro and Castro Valley kind of fall under Eden Area ROP, Dave Espinoza, Andy Shyers and Darren Rees confirmed that San Leandro High and Castro Valley High School are under Eden ROP and are also considered ROPs. 15% Eden Area ROP including SLHS and Castro Valley ii. In 2015 we found; 10% attended high school outside the US 73% graduated High School less than 5 years ago 27% graduated high school more than 5 years ago 34% did some sort of high school Rop or took automotive classes 15% Mission Valley ROP 15% Eden Area ROP Question was asked how many students were surveyed, 250 different students from morning afternoon and evening classes. Every class was surveyed of the students that were in attendance on that particular day. 6. NATEF a. Fall is the self-review b. We need 4 or 5 of you to come in to look at our paperwork, facilities, tools training records to see if it meets NATEF standards. c. If you find it meets the standards it will than come back to the advisory committee in October. d. The advisory committee can than move it forward to NATEF if we find it meets the standards. e. NATEF will review it and send a team leader if all the standards are met. f. The team leader will set up a visit in the spring to the college.

4 g. We will at this point need another 3 or 4 people who have never had anything to do with the college. They were not a student here, and never set on the advisory committee. Preferably technicians or industry representatives. h. Now they review all of the materials once again and put forward a report with their recommendations. Once reviewed by NATEF they say yes or no. i. Ron Bridges recommended Frank From Kevin Hinckley Auto Repair j. NATEF changed from Certification to Accreditation k. Kurt expanded on what we had to do as a school to conform to NATEF standards 7. BMW a. BMW uses the facility on an average of 10 days a month or more. b. Showed a BMW recruitment video. c. Dealers are hiring a lot of our students. d. We have 8 or 10 students working now in dealers e. BMW contract was renewed for 3 years 8. Automotive Program Additions a. Automotive service consultant classes have been added b. Ran the class last semester, and it will be run again next semester c. We are using shopboss pro d. There is now a certificate for Service Consultant e. Alternative fuels classes and certificate f. BMW manufacturers certificate g. Removed our engine machining classes 9. Industry Relations a. The partnership with Hunter Engineering is going well. b. We have had approximately 40 students go through the Hunter training classes. c. They are the top 3 students from ATEC4 (steering and Suspension) d. Bridgestone/Firestone would like to use our facility for training. Classroom space may become available so we can resume talks with them. e. Steve has set up a class with Automotive Training Group to have a transmission diagnosis class here. 10. California Automotive Teachers Conference a. The CAT (California Automotive Teachers Association) will be having its conference at Skyline College on April 25 th. Some of us will be going 11. Chabot class schedule a. Steve and Jim will be teaching afternoon and night classes in the Fall so we can offer classes that haven t been offered at night for a while. 12. Job Outlook, Changes and Trends a. Kurt showed Bureau of labor statistics b. In the bay area we need 1200 replacement auto mechanics 13. Employment opportunities at Chabot a. We are currently looking for adjunct instructors 14. Training Priorities

5 a. Andy Shyers suggested we work more on communication interview skills 15. Observations and recommendations to improve Chabot s Automotive Program a. This is Sears first time attending our advisory committee meeting and see our facility. They wanted us to know they are very impressed. b. They suggested we have our students start to look up parts c. This is available through many of the parts suppliers. d. Kristin talked about concurrent/dual enrollment. The ROP instructors were very interested in this. Doing a college auto class (ATEC50) in High School. 16. Facilities (Walk through, review/evaluation) 17. Meeting adjourned at 8:17 PM
