344/544: THIS week - W05 Mo (class): Defining User Needs We (class): Requirements due <wkshp: W05 short report (User Needs/Requirements) workshop: Peer Sharing Session bring examples of findings and questions TA feedback + start on analysis 1 344/544 : NEXT week W06 Su (due): Mo: W05 pre-readings (despite holiday) HOLIDAY (Thanksgiving). No class. Wed (class): Mental Models due <wkshp: W06 Full Report (TE s, Analysis, Requirements) workshop: Midterm prep (W07). 2 1
W05 Quiz roundup: Stats Overall Multiple Choice score round-up (out of 6.5) Min: 2 Max: 6.5 SD: 0.96 Average: 5.67 Individual question breakdown Q1: (b) 93.0% Q2: (a) 93.0% Q3: (c) 91.1% Q4: written: User experience requirements generally well done; however, some UX requirements such as being exciting are too idealistic for a latte machine. Common mistake with usability requirements was to state a functional requirement, but not qualifying the usable part. I.e. should it be efficient? easy to learn? etc. Q5 (d) 78.2% Q6: (a, b, c, e, f) 80.8% 3 Answers to Quiz 5a: Q1: b Q2: a Q3: c Q4: written Q5: d Q6: a, b, c, e and f 4 2
Q5 examples of good answers A usability requirement is that the machines must provide high enough efficiency to service many people in succession without making them wait very long. A user experience requirement is for the users' interactions with the latte machine to leave them feeling satisfied with the purchase process i.e., not frustrated with difficulty, choices or time required so they will be likely to come back again. Usability Requirement - The interactive latte machine would need to be easy to learn since it's unlikely that users will have a lot of time (or motivation) to figure out how to use it. User Experience Requirement - The machine needs to be nonfrustrating to use so that people will want to use the machine instead of waiting in line at a coffee shop. 5 Announcements 1. Workshop (W05): BRING (from your project) 1 interesting thing, 1 question for analysis. 2. MiniProject report due next week (W06) Then, on to full project with a week s break for midterm. 3. Midterm coming up. Start thinking about your study plan W06 workshop will support Can also look at old exams posted in Resources. Tend to have large problem based components and emphasize strategic thinking at different design stages. 6 3
4. midterm date moving by one class Was: Wed 21 October (in class) NOW: swap to Mon 26 October (in class) 7 what to expect from a design critique Last week: first in-workshop TA miniproject design reviews Some students expressed confusion about form of design feedback. These Design Crits are an opportunity to get early feedback on your work You aren t being marked. The point is to help you improve your work which should improve its mark later. Be glad!! even when it s not fun. à Be receptive. This is not the time for hurt feelings. Instead, follow up if you aren t sure how to make use of feedback. à Same goes for peer review sessions (this week!) 8 4
what TAs can and cannot do at a crit TAs CAN: give feedback on what you PRESENT in workshop answer your questions probe on whether you have considered various things. TAs CANNOT: have reviewed, far less marked, your current deliverable before the workshop Submission 1hr in advance is to ensure you ve completed it by workshop s start, so workshop time is put to best use. For TAs to review/mark in advance requires ~36-48 hours. This would institute a 2-day deadzone where everything stops. Instead: fast feedback based on what you present; mark after. 9 new project team process During W07, we will reform teams for 6-wk Project. You ll complete a new teammate request survey see dashboard, 18 Oct - to be released next week. You will be able to specify preferred teammates - probably 2 names specify individuals you strongly wish to avoid - probably 2 be responsible: limit this to genuine low performance. We ve been asked about early peer eval: this is it isolated but significant frustration w/ no-show teammates those individuals may find themselves working together TAs will consider votes in light of their own observations. 10 5
Along those lines Just in case it wasn t already clear: On-time attendance at workshops is mandatory. Don t let your teammates down. 11 6
