Bridge between Cultural Heritage and Education Aim Make cultural heritage fun primarily for young Promote cultural, religious and racial pluralism Train to be discriminative in taste or judgment; "Cultivate your musical taste"; "Train your tastebuds"; "She is well schooled in poetry (WordNet) [synonyms] polish, refine, fine-tune, down - improve or perfect by pruning or polishing; "refine one's style of writing (WordNet) How is it done? Virtual Expeditions An innovative approach to the creation of user experience : As a new search and retrieval methodology As a new consumption experience Encounter with cultural heritage must become contemporary: Interactive, Playful, Entertaining Example of a Virtual Expedition
The Approach Technological focus is on Content integration: Conceptual modeling of cultural information (semantics-based thematic whole ) Single-point access to distributed content sources Unification of multiple multimedia formats and multilingual content Improved accessibility, search and retrieval capabilities, content management Envisioned use of technology is clearly Content management and Knowledge management oriented: Collaborative authoring Creative user experience Search and retrieval Content sharing Core Technological Innovation From the technological point of view, is primarily an attempt to develop the Next generation search engine: Intelligent (ontology-driven) All-in-one display (information aggregation) Multilingual Seamless aggregation of multiple formats Seamless access to multiple, distributed content sources (including the so-called Deep Web digital libraries, collections, repositories)
Detailed Objectives Conceptual Framework Unifying framework for the ontology-based conceptualisation of cultural objects and resources Tools and utilities for online communities to contribute their knowledge, to partake in a dynamic publishing process of the cultural resources Interactive knowledge-driven, user-friendly interfaces Simplified means of searching & accessing distributed digital contents through a multi-faceted portal Innovative Methodology and Tools for designing VIRTUAL EXPEDITIONS Thematically organised succession of virtual objects Pre-selected semantically-based pathways and alternative trails used-published by previous visitors Conceptualization Assumption: numerous cultural heritage resources on WWW Problem: How to find them? How to combine them? How to use them? (Possibly also: how to access them?) Requirement: framework for conceptual modelling of domain Goal: unify distributed cultural heritage resources into a single thematic frame Means: Ontology alignment: automatic merging of knowledge from distributed ontologies in order to model domain Distributed content management: access to distributed content from a single frame
Collaborative Editing Assumption: content user is potentially also content editor and content provider Problem: Web publishing designed for consumption Collaborative technologies limited to file sharing Rare application of collaborative technologies to cultural heritage Requirement: collaborative framework Means: Collaborative publishing methodology Semantic annotation (collaborative conceptual modeling) Content sharing (distributed content management) Creative User Experience Assumption: Web technologies suitable for creating complex user experience Problem: Technically complicated (for both providers and users) Rarely adapted to cultural heritage (complex cultural objects) Limited usefulness if not driven by conceptual modelling of domain Requirement: integration of state-of-the-art multimedia technologies with technologies for conceptual modelling and collaborative publishing Means: Knowledge-driven multifaceted access to cultural heritage content GIS/TIS Semantic search and navigation (including Virtual Expeditions) Seamless integration of multimedia content (distributed content management)
Virtual Expedition Thematically-organised succession of virtualised cultural objects Exposed as Web resources, Bound together by a conceptual model, Allowing interactive exploration through alternative trails, or through examination of the thematically pre-selected semantically related content Motivation Transforming cultural heritage content consumption into TV experience Integrating interactivity with guided consumption Empowering cultural heritage consumers with means to become cultural heritage providers Inspired by interactive TV and computer games Preliminary System Architecture Online Utilities Multifaceted Interfaces Virtual Expedition Maker Semantic Annotator Ontology Editor Semantic Annotations Ontology Logical Reasoning and Inference Engine Repository of Educational Resources GIS Semantic Directory Semantic Search Distributed Ontology Alignment Services Distributed Content Management Services WWW
