1 2014 SUMMER SCHOOL Gender in Europe: Unfinished Revolution? 29 th June 4th July 2014 Universidad Complutense, Madrid Gender equality is taken for granted in Europe by most people. Yet, in many areas, the gap between genders remains wide and variable and in some way be even widening or even ignored, for example, pay, glass ceilings, violence against women and forced marriage, sexuality and transgender rights. Thus, same sex unions are legally recognized in just half EU member states, while 17 of the 28 states even require the compulsory sterilisation of trans gender people. This summer school the 21 st in our series will bring together experts from law and justice, think tanks, politics, NGOs and universities, to discuss these key issues over five days of talks, panels, working groups, debates role playing and discussions. What is meant by women s rights? Are mothers rights in contradiction with women workers rights? Questions will include the following: How can gender policies best be implemented?whom benefits the business of prostitution? How much money is involved? How religions still influence gender equality in Europe? What does equality mean in European countries? Which measures should Europe take to reach equality? Do Femen and Pussy Riot provide examples of protest? Can violence be legitimised in the pursuit of equality? Do local laws violate the rights of transgender people? Same sex marriage: a race of obstacles? Why is violence to women still tolerated? Are schools doing enough on gender? Who or what legitimises gender roles?
