2 Abstract. The main goal of the NA4 module Distributed Archive or Historical Earthquake Data of the EU NERIES project is to establish and implement an Archive of Historical Earthquake Data (AHEAD), with special reference to the background data (studies, macroseismic datapoints, etc.), to be used to compile a homogeneous European Parametric Earthquake Catalogue. This document describes the portion of the inventory for the time-window of AHEAD, completing and integrating the deliverables dedicated to the time-window (Deliverables D1 and D6). In this time-window the inventory is limited to strong earthquakes (M > 5.8 or Ix > 8). The inventory considers the most significant, or at least the most recent, roots supporting the earthquakes. The roots have been retrieved from the same datasets considered for the previous time-window and also from instrumental catalogues or bulletins, and studies dealing with instrumental determinations of specific significant earthquakes. 1. Introduction The content of this deliverable is the , M 5.8, portion of the NA4 inventory; it describes, therefore, the material for the compilation of the earthquake catalogue, in continuity with Deliverables D1+D2 and D6. The assessment of the parameters for the events belonging to this time window is described in Deliverable D10, together with the ones before The inventory The inventory is the annotated database of European earthquakes and related datasets. For the time-window it concerns earthquakes with M 5.8 (or Ix 8) only; it covers the same area as D6, i.e. territories belonging to EU and neighbouring areas, approximately comprised between 13 W and 31 E (lon), 35 N and 65 N (lat). In this time-window the sources of macroseismic data already consulted for the time-window have been considered: i) recent literature; ii) current - and in some case older - parametric catalogues; iii) online macroseismic databases, such as ECOS, DBMI04, SisFrance, etc. When sources of macroseismic data are not available, the entries come from parametric catalogues. For this time-window also sources of instrumental data have been considered, such as instrumental determinations from both catalogues or bulletins, and studies aimed at assessing parameters from early instrumental recordings. The NA4 inventory is compiled according to the same procedures described in D1 and D6 for the period before It classifies the datasets (roots) according to their level (type and quality, see D6).To take into account the instrumental catalogues and studies, the classification of the root level (RL) has been integrated with two new codes, 20 and 30, as reported in Table 1. Table 1. Root level (RL) according to type and quality. Definition Level 1. 3 As a whole the inventory for the time-window contains 684 entries related to 293 earthquakes. The distribution of the roots per root level is given in Table 2; their geographical distribution is given in Figure 1. Table 2. Amount and percentage of entries ( ) according to their root level. 4 3. Sources of macroseismic data points For the time-window a total of 23 roots with has been considered, related to 106 earthquakes. and provide a total of more than data points, similar to that collected for the previous time-window. These roots come from: i) recent studies on single or multiple earthquakes; ii) macroseismic studies performed shortly after an earthquake; iii) online macroseismic databases, such as ECOS, SisFrance, and the macroseismic database of Thessaloniki (Thess. Macro DB, 2010). The full list of roots with is reported in Table 3. Table 3. List of the roots with inventoried and number of total and preferred entries. Rcode Study RL Entries p entries Ann. Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am., 97, 5, Total Conclusions The roots related to 293 large (M > 5.8) European earthquakes in the time-window have been inventoried. For each earthquake the preferred root has been selected, according to the following priorities: roots with ; for the earthquakes with more than one root with, the preference has been given according to the quality (first RL = 11, then 12, then 13), in case of entries with the same RL, the choice is performed according to expert judgment; 3. instrumental catalogues; 4. parametric catalogues. As a result, 106 earthquakes (36%) are supported by macroseismic datapoints and 187 by a catalogue entry, only; 103 out of 187 (55%) are instrumental, only (Table 5). The geographical distribution of the earthquakes according to the level of the selected root is shown Figure
