3 Ethernet over MPLS Layer 2 transport over an IP/MPLS network Multiple Layer 2 technologies, Ethernet dominating nowedays Point-2-Point (VPWS, Layer 2 VPN) and Multipoint-2-Multipoint (VPLS) services Layer 2 multicast using point-to-multipoint LSPs as an emerging service 3
4 Data Plane IP/MPLS network Pseudowire transport RSVP or LDP to establish Label Switched Paths RSVP has traffic engineering functions and Fast Reroute Layer 2 functions (e.g. MAC learning) for VPLS only on edge routers Backbone routers not aware of the services 4
5 Control Plane 2 protocols: BGP (with neighbour autodiscovery) LDP (simpler but without autodiscovery) 5
6 Tests on Juniper routers The purpose of the tests was to assess the status of implementation of selected VPWS and VPLS features on commercially available routers. The selected features are either new or interesting for research and education networks. The ultimate goal of the tests was to verify if the Ethernet over MPLS technology fulfills selected requirements for Carrier Class Transport Network Technologies identified in [GN _DJ1.1.1]. Tests executed on Juniper Networks routers. Juniper MX-series routers (MX-240, MX-480 and MX-960), software 11.1R2.3. 6
