2 What is AVID? AVID is an elective class that prepares students in the academic middle for colleges and universities. 2

3 AVID History Developed in 1980 by English teacher Mary Catherine Swanson in San Diego Designed to reach underserved inner city students AVID now serves over 220,000 students in nearly 2,300 middle and high schools in 40 states and 15 countries. 3

4 The Mission: AVID students will: Succeed in rigorous curriculum Complete a rigorous college preparatory path Enter mainstream activities of the school Increase their enrollment in four year colleges Become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society 4

5 AVID Student Supports Teaches study and organizational skills Strengthens their writing skills Uses writing as a tool for learning Gives tutorial help through college tutors Teaches students to work collaboratively to be successful in the most rigorous courses Takes students to visit colleges and universities. Assists students with the application process for four year colleges and universities Helps students explore careers through guest speakers 5

7 AVID Students AVID targets students who are earning average grades but have the potential to succeed in advanced courses. Ability Are the students getting Cs and Bs but are they capable of more? Can they succeed in advanced courses (honors, pre AP, AP) with support? Desire and Determination Do they want to attend college? Are they willing to work hard to get there? Membership in an underserved group Will they be the first in their family to attend college? Are they historically unlikely to attend college? Are they in a low income household? Are there special circumstances? 7

8 Student Selection Campuses recruit students to apply to the program. Interested students complete an application, written interview, and oral interview. The AVID campus site team, composed of an administrator, a counselor, the campus AVID coordinator, and teachers from other subjects, selects the students for the program. 8

9 Why AVID Works Places under achieving students into more rigorous courses Teaches academic skills not targeted in other classes Provides intensive support with in class tutors and a strong student/teacher relationship Creates a positive peer group for students Develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination 9
