South Carolina Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities Long-Term Trainee Manual
South Carolina Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (SC LEND) Welcome to the South Carolina Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (SC LEND) program! SC LEND prepares and educates culturally competent interdisciplinary leaders as part of the Maternal Child Health (MCH) program. SC LEND is a joint effort between the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, the Center for Disability Resources (UCEDD) at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine (USCSOM) Department of Pediatrics in Columbia, and the Greenville Health System (GHS) in Greenville. SC LEND provides training in the development of leadership skills in clinical care, research, policy, advocacy, training and administration for youth with ASD-ND and their families. Trainees will participate in both a structured curriculum of activities and individualized training opportunities based upon their individual interests and prior training experiences. Training activities include: A didactic online training course with focus on both clinical and leadership topics Participation in a leadership project Participation in community activities Interaction with youth with ASD-ND and their families Clinical experiences and observations Training in developmental screening and assessment as appropriate for the trainee 2
Long-Term Trainee Requirements Long-term Trainees are required to complete at least 300 hours of LEND training. The hours are completed through a variety of activities including a didactic curriculum, leadership training clinical preparation, and community activities. Detailed descriptions of the curriculum are included in subsequent sections. Long-term Trainees will complete an Individualized Leadership Training Plan (ILTP). The ILTPs detail the desired goals the Long-Term Trainee has for their LEND training year and the methods used to attain these goals using a Logic Model. The trainee will initially determine his/her goals and work with the site mentor to develop specific activities. These activities will include the SC LEND curriculum requirements and the Long-term Trainee s individual goals. The ILTP will be periodically reviewed throughout the training year and can be adjusted as needed. In addition, all Long-term Trainees are required to attend and participate in the following inperson meetings*: 1. Orientation 2. Leadership Meeting 3. Nurturing Developing Minds Conference in Greenville 4. Year-end Meeting * Partial travel reimbursement is offered to all Long-term Trainees for LEND approved events. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Long-term Trainees will also meet with their mentor three times a year to review progress towards LEND hours and ILTP objectives. Mentors may also schedule individual or group meetings with the Long-term Trainees at periodic intervals. 3
Long-Term Trainee Curriculum Didactic Curriculum All Long-term Trainees will complete a two semester course, Interdisciplinary Study of ASD- ND 1 and 2. The course is an online course that includes a didactic component, discussion forum, and an interactive learning program. The course is divided into two-week modules. For each module, the didactic component has both a clinical educational topic and a leadership education topic, with topics presented by the LEND faculty. At the end of each didactic presentation, there is a test provided to monitor mastery of the presented topic. As part of each module, Long-term Trainees will also participate in an interprofessional discussion via a forum discussion board and a problem based learning activity. Each Long-term trainee will be assigned to a forum discussion group that will be comprised Long-term trainees from different disciplines as well as LEND faculty. Forum groups will be given a discussion question and Long-term Trainees will have the opportunity to respond to each other and the LEND faculty as well as ask questions related to the topic. Long-Term trainees will also be given a problem-based learning activity to be completed as part of an assigned group. For each two week module, each group will be given a clinical case scenario. The group will develop hypotheses and potential strategies for making the clinical decisions. The LEND faculty coordinating the learning activity will then provide the clinical outcome for the case. Leadership Activities and Project Long-term Trainees will participate in a variety of leadership activities throughout the LEND year, including the Leadership Seminar and Leadership Project. The Leadership Seminar is a one-day meeting of all trainees and select LEND faculty. During this meeting, a range of leadership topics will be presented. This includes book discussions (the book will be provided prior to the seminar), case discussions, and presentations. The Leadership Project is a year-long project intended to provide Long-Term trainees the opportunity to develop and implement a community project, research project, or other scholarly activity that will enhance their leadership skills and further their professional development goals. The Leadership Project is under the guidance and mentorship of Suzanne McDermott, Ph.D. and a site mentor. Each site will have a designated Leadership Project but Long-Term trainees will also have the opportunity to develop their own Leadership Project. With the guidance of Dr. McDermott and the site mentor, the Long-Term Trainees will develop goals for the project, identify responsibilities and execute the project. There will be period check-ins with the site mentor and Dr. McDermott. Long-Term Trainees will present their Leadership Project at the Year-End Meeting. They will also have the opportunity to present their project at the Nurturing Developing Minds conference. 4
Clinical Preparation Long-term Trainees will have the opportunity to be involved in several different clinical activities. Long-term Trainees are involved in clinical activities as required by their professional or training program responsibilities. These clinical activities contribute to the required 300 hours for Longterm Trainees. LEND Long-term trainees are also required to participate in five (5) interdisciplinary clinical experiences throughout the year. These experiences include Therapeutic Interventions Multi-disciplinary Evaluation Programs Specialty Care Long-term trainees experiences may be observational or as participants in the clinics. Each site offers a variety of different clinical experiences. Long-term trainees will be provided with information regarding these opportunities and how to access these by their site mentors. Family Mentorship Project Long-term Trainees will participate in several activities within the Family Mentorship Project. These activities will include presentations by parent-panels as well as options to observe a range of family activities. Community Networking Experience Long-term Trainees will be required to attend at least two community networking meetings during the course of their SC LEND year. Trainees will be provided information regarding options for these meetings and contact for scheduling attendance. Trainees will also be able to attend other community meetings at their choosing if approved by their site mentor. Other SC LEND Activities Long-term trainees will also be required to complete other activities as identified by the LEND faculty and including in their ILTP. These include CITI Training AHEC webinars NIRS recording of information Other discipline specific trainings as assigned 5
