4 Prerequisites Datto Technical Support is always willing and available to assist with business critical situations such as bare metal restores (BMRs). If the situation allows, providing advanced notice of planned bare metal restores will let Datto ensure they have the best resources available to aid in this process. For additional assistance, please contact a Datto Technical Support Engineer at or submit a support ticket by going to during regular support hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to midnight). If you require assistance outside of business hours or if you are experiencing a disaster, contact [email protected] and a support technician will reach out to you within one hour. BMRs can be performed either from a PXE boot or a USB drive. Make sure you have the following: 1. A physical machine to restore to that has a: a. NIC available for a network PXE boot OR b. USB drive Prerequisites If performing a PXE boot, you will also need: 1. A NIC available on your SIRIS device 2. A crossover ethernet cable connecting the physical machine to your SIRIS device SIRIS BMR Guide 5

5 PXE Boot Configuration PXE Boot Configuration If you are going to perform a PXE boot BMR, follow the instructions below to configure the target machine: 1. Plug in and boot the target machine you are using for the network PXE boot BMR. 2. Configure the BIOS on the target machine to enable LAN boot ROM. Note: This is sometimes called option ROM 3. Set PXE Boot as the Primary Boot Device from the machine s BIOS. 4. Save the preferences and exit out of the BIOS. 5. Power off the target machine. 6 SIRIS BMR Guide

6 Accessing Recovery Points Accessing Recovery Points Whether performing a PXE boot or USB restore, you need to access the recovery points on your SIRIS device so you can choose which recovery point to convert to a physical machine. Follow the steps below to access the recovery points: 1. Navigate to the SIRIS Web Interface locally or remotely: a. If locally, open Firefox on the SIRIS device and type the IP address into the address bar. b. If remotely, open a browser on your computer and log into i. From the Device Status page, click on the SIRIS device and select Remote Web: 2. From the Agents tab, click on the protected device you wish to restore, then click Access recovery points: SIRIS BMR Guide 7

7 Accessing Recovery Points 3. This will bring up a list of recovery points in descending order. Locate the point you want and click Network BMR: 4. This will launch the BMR Wizard. Click Start BMR to continue: 8 SIRIS BMR Guide

8 Setting BMR Preferences Setting BMR Preferences 1. After selecting Start BMR, a list of non-primary NICs with a cable connection will appear. Select the NIC that is connected to the target machine you are restoring to, then click Continue: 2. This will bring up a prompt to configure the target machine along with a link for the alternate USB drive option: 3. For network PXE boot BMRs, see PXE Boot Configuration on page 6, then click Continue. If performing a USB drive BMR, continue reading gpxe USB Drive Configuration on page 10. SIRIS BMR Guide 9

9 gpxe USB Drive Configuration gpxe USB Drive Configuration If you are going to perform a gpxe USB drive BMR, follow the instructions below to configure the USB drive: 1. Insert the USB drive into an available USB port on the SIRIS device. 2. From the configuration prompt in step 2 of Setting BMR Preferences on page 9, select gpxe USB flash drive: 3. Refresh the page to format the USB drive: Note: Formatting the USB drive will destroy any data that is on the drive. 4. Click Continue. 10 SIRIS BMR Guide

10 Starting the BMR Starting the BMR Whether performing a network PXE boot or gpxe USB drive BMR, follow the steps below to start the BMR: 1. After clicking Continue from the previous screen, the NIC status and Machine status will be listed: 2. If the Machine status is down, power on the target machine. Note: If the target machine has multiple NICs and continues to say down for the machine status after being on for several minutes, try unplugging the NIC on the target machine and plugging it into the secondary NIC. 3. Once the PXE boot is complete, click Continue: SIRIS BMR Guide 11

11 Configuring Partitions Configuring Partitions After the PXE boot finishes, follow the steps below to configure partitions on the target machine: 1. From the Partition editor, clear all existing partitions of the target device using the tools at the bottom: Note: SSH access is not required for standard BMRs. It is included for special cases that may incorporate LVM, software RAID, GPT or disk encryption. 12 SIRIS BMR Guide

12 Configuring Partitions 2. For each disk listed under Physical device, select the disk and click Clear disk: Note: No changes will be made until you hit Commit after configuring your partitions 3. A dialog box will appear to confirm. Click Clear partitions: 4. Once all partitions are removed from the target machine, click Add partition: SIRIS BMR Guide 13

13 Configuring Partitions 5. Specify the preferences for this partition, then click Create Partition: a. Physical disk - Select the disk type from the dropdown. b. Type - Select the partition type (Primary partition is used in most cases). c. Size - Specify the size of the partition. Use the slider above the sectors box for quick sizing. d. Bootable (active) - Make sure this is checked if this is the machine s boot partition. e. Format - Select this to format the partition. f. Filesystem - Choose the filesystem from the dropdown. g. Mount point - Specify a mount point if needed. 14 SIRIS BMR Guide

14 Configuring Partitions 6. Confirm the partition by clicking Commit. 7. Repeat steps 4-6 until all partitions are created. 8. After all partitions are created, click Continue at the bottom of the partition editor to proceed with the BMR process. SIRIS BMR Guide 15

15 Performing the BMR Performing the BMR Now that the partitions have been created, follow the steps below to set the disk geometry and perform the restoration: 1. After setting up partitions, click Start NTFS volume resize to match the backup files with the disk geometry of the target machine: 2. Once the resize operation is complete, click Continue. 3. Next, select which partition to use on the target machine for the restore and click Continue: 16 SIRIS BMR Guide

16 Performing the BMR 4. After selecting the restore destination, click Start NTFS block level restore: 5. Once the block level restore is complete, click Continue to Kernel and bootloader configuration: SIRIS BMR Guide 17

17 Configuring the Bootloader Configuring the Bootloader The last step of the BMR is to configure the bootloader. Follow the steps below to complete the configuration: 1. After finishing the block level restore, specify your boot options, then click Continue: 2. Start the hardware independent restore (HIR) process by clicking Proceed with HIR: 18 SIRIS BMR Guide

18 Configuring the Bootloader 3. After the hardware independent restore has finished, click Proceed with breakdown to reboot the target machine: 4. If the network PXE boot method was used, you will need to reconfigure the BIOS to its previous bootloader configuration. The Bare Metal Restore is now complete.
