1 Leased Line PPP Connections Between IOS and HP Routers This technical document describes how to connect an IOS Router to an HP Router using point-to-point protocol. An example of an IOS router connected to an HP router is shown below: If you have a similar connection between an HP and IOS router, follow these three steps to enable PPP: 1) Configure the routers with these settings: IP routing RIP routing protocol Telnet access allowed SNMP with read only access Serial interfaces are configured for PPP 2) Change the following items in order to use the provided files at the end of this document: IOS Router Settings Hostnames Passwords: enable secret enable virtual terminal RIP IP address on interface Ethernet 0 (E0) or 100VG- AnyLAN 0 (V0) IP addresses on interface Serial 0 (S0) Community string if it is not "public" HP Router Settings IP address on ETHER1G IP address on interface WAN1G community string if it is not "public" Adjacent host's IP address configuration for the IOS router's serial interface 3) Configure Your Router For the IOS router, follow these steps: 1. After the IOS router boots up for the first time use the initial System Configuration Dialog to configure as much of the IOS router as possible. 2. Modify the IOS router configuration with the IOS Router Configuration File shown below. For the HP router, follow these steps: 1. Use Quick Config to configure as most of the router. 2. For PPP to operate, configure the HP router to have an Adjacent Host route. 3. Use the configuration editor to add or modify the file with the HP Router Configuration File shown below. Please note that the predictor compression between HP and IOS routers will not interoperate.
