3 the lymphatic system LYMPH NODES LYMPHATIC VESSELS NODES LOCATED THROUGHOUT THE BODY, THEY ARE THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE AGAINST DISEASE, AND THE PLACE WHERE LYMPHATIC FLUID IS FILTERED OF WASTE. what it does EXPERIENCE what it is It is essentially your body s natural filtration system that is made up of a network of vessels all over the body, as well as lymph nodes, the spleen and the tonsils. Organs such as the heart, lungs, liver and skin also have lymphatic tissue. It s like a vast system of numerous highways. When one becomes blocked, it causes a spill out into all the other lanes, which causes them to move slower, says Anne Bramham, spa consultant and instructor for the Dr. Vodder School. how it works One of its main functions is to transport excess lymph fluid, a clear, watery substance filled with proteins, salts, glucose and other metabolism leftovers, from the tissues back to the blood. This process is important because it keeps fluid from building up in the tissues and removes the waste that slows our bodies down. Generally, if our lymphatic system is functioning well, we feel well, says Bramham. VESSELS THE THINLY-WALLED, VALVE STRUCTURES CLOSEST TO THE SKIN. THEY ARE SIMILAR TO THE VESSELS IN THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, BUT ONLY MOVE IN ONE DIRECTION THROUGHOUT THE BODY. LYMPH NODES LYMPHATIC VESSELS It works on its own when you breathe or contract muscles, but can sometimes become sluggish, particularly in cases of trauma or lymphedema (blockage). Our body s tissues start to look bloated and thick when fluid is in places it s not supposed to be, says Beverly Hills, CA, plastic surgeon Leslie Stevens, MD. Lymphatic systems do not have their own pumps, unlike our body s circulatory system, which relies on the consistent pumping of the heart to function. 5 HOW TO FIND AN MLD THERAPIST Bramham recommends going to vodderschool.com to find a certified therapist near you, and to ask if they offer the type of MLD that you need, whether it be a face or body treatment to target specific benefits. The technique includes creating small semi-circles along the skin using rhythmic, gentle pressure to target the vessels located in the skin s layers closest to the surface. EXPERIENCE A relaxing, gentle massage using continuous hand movements that typically produce an overall state of deep relaxation in the body. The treatment itself works to engage the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for stimulation of healing and repair activities that occur when the body is at rest. I think of it as a true rejuvenation because you re working from the inside out, Bramham says. You may feel tired afterwards and should try to rest to prolong the treatment s anti-inflammatory and anti-stress effects. Therapists also suggest avoiding caffeine and drinking plenty of water afterward to help flush out toxins. how long does it last? Usually 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the condition being addressed and the number of lymphatic areas being treated. Treatments often target the individual s problem area and are completed in about an hour. Your practitioner may suggest a series of treatments in order to extend overall wellness.
