Secondary School Transcripts An official, certified record of your secondary school studies, including school-leaving examination results and an explanation of the grading system, should be mailed directly to the UMass Boston Office of Undergraduate Admissions. If you are presently in your last year of school, your mid-year grades should be included, or forwarded when available. If the transcripts and other records are not in English, a certified translation must be provided, as well. Students from countries that follow the British educational system must submit official Examination Council results to UMass Boston (e.g., GCSE and A-Level examination results). 2. Statement of Purpose / Essay The statement of purpose allows you to provide a personal explanation of your academic goals and your decision to seek admission to UMass Boston. We suggest you use this opportunity to discuss your personal background, as well as your educational and professional interests. Your statement, which may be typed or neatly handwritten, should take the form of a well-written, clearly organized essay of no fewer than 500 words. 3. Exam Scores Certain standardized test scores may be required as part of your application: TOEFL / IELTS All students whose first language is not English must submit official test scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam. The only exception is for transfer applicants with a computed grade of B or better in English Composition 101 and 102 at an accredited two- or four-year institution. The TOEFL measures a student s written and oral ability to function in an English-language-based setting. Most successful candidates are within the range of on the paper test, on the computer-based test, or on the TOEFL IBT test. Information concerning testing dates and places may be obtained by writing to: TOEFL, P.O. Box 899-R, Princeton, NJ 08541, USA; or by visiting the TOEFL website at Successful candidates who take the IELTS exam generally score 6.0 or better. More-detailed information about the IELTS is available at SAT I / ACT All international freshman applicants are required to submit official Scholastic Aptitude I (SAT I) or American College Testing (ACT) scores. SAT II subject test scores are not required. Note: All test scores must be official, sent directly from the testing agency or printed on an official secondary school transcript. The school code (CEEB Code) for the University of Massachusetts Boston is Certification of Finances (for students applying for an F-1 visa) The Certification of Finances form shows evidence of your ability to finance your education and living expenses during your stay as a student at UMass Boston. Your ability to document funding available to you is a necessary part of your application for an F-1 student visa. You should find a copy of the Certification of Finances form in this package. Additional Transfer Application Requirements Transfer applicants should submit all items noted in the application instructions for first-year students, with the differences noted below: 1. College / University Transcripts UMass Boston requires that an official, year-by-year statement of grades or official transcript be sent directly to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by all colleges and/or universities attended by the applicant. A professional evaluation of all international academic coursework is required of transfer students. To obtain an evaluation, please contact one of the following organizations: or or visit for additional information. 2. Exam Scores SAT I or ACT scores are not required of any student who has successfully completed at least two years of post-secondary study. The TOEFL is not required of students who have successfully completed at least two years of post-secondary study at an institution that uses English as its primary language of instruction. 3. Transfer Credit Transfer applicants may be awarded credit for courses completed at another U.S. college or university that is regionally accredited, or from a postsecondary institution outside the United States and approved by the government or ministry of education in its home country. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will determine the number of credits and courses a student may transfer from previously attended institutions. Transfer applicants may also be required to submit college/university course descriptions or syllabi from previously attended institutions for the purpose of performing a transfer-credit evaluation.

2 Special Information for International Students I-20 Certificates The Certificate of Eligibility (I-20) is issued by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions after the applicant has satisfied all admission and financial requirements and has been admitted to a degree program at UMass Boston. International Credentials All international students must submit official transcripts along with certified English translations. The International Baccalaureate Students who have completed the International Baccalaureate diploma (IB) and have completed higher-level exams may receive transfer credit. UMass Boston may grant credits for French Baccalaureate courses. University credits may be granted for German Abitur exams. Advanced Credit A-Level Exams Students who have successfully passed three GSCE A-level exams with a grade of C or higher may receive transfer credit. Financial Aid Although international students do not qualify for federal, state, or university need-based aid, they are eligible to apply for a variety of loans. Loan programs available to international students at both undergraduate and graduate levels include: n Citiassist Loan Program through Citibank n Massachusetts Educational Finance Authority (MEFA) Loan n Smart Option Student Loan Program through Sallie Mae n Chase Select Loan through Chase Bank n Collegiate Loan through Wells Fargo n TruFit Loan through Citizens Bank International students who borrow through any of these loan programs must have a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident co-sign the loan application. Pre-College Options for English-Language Study at UMass Boston UMass Boston offers summer pre-college opportunities for international students who need to improve their ability to communicate in English before moving into a degree program. The Intensive English Program addresses all basic skill areas: speaking and listening, reading and writing, as well as grammar and vocabulary building. It is designed to help students learn English in the shortest possible time. The University Preparation Program is specifically designed for international students who meet requirements for undergraduate or graduate study but require stronger English-language skills to perform successfully upon matriculation. Participants experience an integrated program focusing on English-language instruction, study skills, academic course work, critical and creative thinking, TOEFL preparation, and the college admission process. International students in either of these full-time programs receive the I-20 document enabling them to apply for an F-1 student visa.
