3 In an era of tight budgets and staffing limitations, graduate deans are exercising creativity in making operations more efficient. Presenters from master s focused institutions will describe examples of how they have been able to implement innovations that have a big impact without the high price tag.

5 Situated in beautiful Princess Anne, The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is pleased to be the doctoral research degree granting institution on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We offer a variety of master s programs and doctoral programs with part-time or full-time class formats. Consistently distinguished as one of America s Best Black Colleges by US News and World Report, our graduate programs are indicative of the mission and the vision of our historically black institution to prepare well-rounded professionals from all races, background and socioeconomic groups for a global workforce. Our strengths are in our teaching and research capabilities. We have more than 150 graduate faculty members who are dedicated to our students. As of fall 2014, UMES has a growing graduate enrollment of over 710 students representing more than 50 countries from around the world!

6 UMES has 19 graduate programs which include the Ph.D. in Toxicology, Marine Environmental Sciences, Food Science and Technology, and Organizational Leadership. We offer a doctorate in Education Leadership and a doctorate in Physical Therapy. A Ph.D. program in Pharmaceutical Sciences has been submitted to Maryland Higher Education Commission for approval. There are three full time staff workers and a graduate dean. The office has a minimum of two student workers.

8 Limited recruitment budget: 50% recruiter salary; $1,000 in-state travel; $1,000 out-of-state travel. Graduate School continues to have the highest enrollment since fall 2008 (from 475 to 710). Action Steps: 1. Extend courtesy and respect to every applicant; 2. Follow-up on every application through telephone calls and s; 3. Applicants not accepted in one program are referred to other programs; 4. Use of rolling admissions to facilitate enrollment; 5. Encourage faculty and departmental ownership of the recruitment process; 6. Encourage faculty with fair distribution of limited assistantships.

9 Action Steps on External Collaborations: 1. UMES became a member of the MID-Atlantic Alliance of HBCU s and through collaboration, became one of two HBCUs in the nation with a PSM degree. 2. UMES is a member of the Maryland Council of Graduate Deans. We collaborate to take advantage of existing resources such as the Dissertation House, sharing of post-docs, and other activities for graduate students made possible by a $1.7 million AGEP grant.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you for your support of graduate students here at UMES and their involvement in the PROMISE AGEP program. With your support we were able to attend the annual Fall Harvest Dinner, which occurs each year at the University of Maryland College Park. This event is an opportunity for UMD graduate students, post docs and alumni to come together and support each other. At this year's dinner, we were lucky enough to have all 12 UMD institutions present! We heard from soon to be Dr. David Mayo, who encouraged us all in our higher education endeavors. Students who attended the SREB Compact for Faculty Diversity, including myself, spoke about the recent conference in Atlanta and how inspiring it was. This conference will be in the DC area next year so we are hoping to get many of our UMD system students involved. Dr. Renetta Tull, Director of PROMISE AGEP at UMBC, shared with us that the PROMISE Research Symposium will occur at the University of Maryland College Park on Friday, February 13th. She encouraged us to spread the word about this symposium so that we can have good turn out from all of our UMD schools. I also made sure to let Dr. Tull know that the UMES School of Graduate Studies will be holding their annual Regional Research Symposium in April, as part of Graduate Education Week. It is my hope that through joint symposiums and events such as these, we can foster a strong network of UMD graduate students doing quality and cutting edge research. Thank you again for your support in this endeavor! I've attached a photo from the Fall Harvest Dinner of several of our UMES students with Dr. Tull. 12 Action Steps on Internal Collaboration: 1. We collaborate with the Frederick Douglas Library that hosts workshops on plagiarism; the Library will also mount an exhibition on the history of Graduate Education at UMES; We collaborate with the University Writing Center to have the Director offer writing workshops to graduate students 2. I serve as Chair of the President s Lecture Series Committee and use this source of funding opportunity to invite speakers who are also able to speak to graduate education issues. Former Jamaican Ambassador to the United Nations, Attorney Curtis Ward was a keynote speaker. Dr. Suzanne Ortega, President of CGS, will be a featured speaker in April We work with the graduate students to meet basic needs such as clothing. 4. The Division of Institutional Advancement has helped the Graduate School by creating a donate now button on our website. Students and others may donate even a dollar.

13 Action Steps: The Graduate School has an annual Research Symposium that attracts participants from Maryland, other states and overseas. The event started as a departmental activity in Natural Sciences but was adopted and expanded by the Graduate School. Our speakers have included: Thomas A. Kunkel, Ph.D., National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Benjamin E. Cuker, Ph.D., Hampton University Mr. McMahan Gray, US Department of Energy, National Energy Technology Laboratory

14 The Graduate School presents its inaugural Graduate Education Week during April 20-23, Students from high and middle schools will be on campus to participate. It will also become a recruitment activity for which undergraduate admissions will be responsible.

15 UMES has met the criteria to be re-classified by Carnegie as a Doctoral Research University. Action Steps: Working with advisors and students on time-todegree completion; revision of funding model; establishment of committee by the President on steps to retain the classification
