3 Guidelines for Using the Course Planner This section contains the recommended process for successfully developing your modularized course using the Course Planner. The purpose of the Course Planner is two-fold. First, it is used as a storyboard by Course Team Leaders and Developers to ensure that course module learning competencies and outcomes align with learning activities and assessments; it also outlines the structure and sequence of the instruction. Second, it is used as an instruction guide for course module facilitators to help ensure consistent content delivery. Getting Started Below is a brief outline of the course module development process: The Lead College completes the modularized credit course approval process (Curriculum Review Committee process). Project Team Leader, Course Team Leader and Developer complete the Developer Certification Training coming soon Project Team Leader, Course Team Leader and Developer plan the learning : Review Design Best Practices for Online, Self-paced, Competency-based Learning Review the Quality Assurance Rubric throughout the development process to ensure that the course/modules meet quality standards: Using the competencies and student learning outcomes (SLOs) (available from Approved Courses/Curriculum (Final) folder on thepoint), select content, learning activities and assessments all the SLOs in the course. Course Team Leader and Developer (under the guidance of the Project Team Leader) develop the Course Planner. Review instructions to download it from thepoint. Course Team Leader and Developer submit the completed Course Planner to the Project Team Leader for review. When the document has been reviewed and approved by the Project Team Leader, it should be sent to Learn on Demand team at the System Office to review and provide feedback. After Course Planner has been approved, developer builds the master course in a Blackboard shell using content, learning activities and assessments identified in plan the learning. Instructions and templates for Blackboard: Moved to thepoint, needs to be updated Note: the master course is built first, followed by the modules. Course Team Leader submits the course to the Project Team Leader for review and approval. Project Team Leader submits the course to the Quality Assurance Coordinator for QA review. The QA process and required forms can be found on the Point - KCTCS Online Learn on Demand- QA. Course Planner Guide Development Guide Page 1

4 When the course is Quality Certified, it is ready to deploy. Course shells will be created when the course is scheduled in PeopleSoft. Instructions for scheduling a LoD course can be found in the Blackboard ecommunity - PeopleSoft_Student_Administration. See screen shot below. Developer builds the course/modules in Blackboard shell using content from the master shell. On an on-going basis, evaluate and improve as needed. Course Planner Guide Development Guide Page 2

5 Elements of the Course Planner The Course Planner is an Excel spreadsheet. Download the Course Planner from thepoint and save as Course Planner_PPPnnnn where PPP is the course prefix, (i.e., BUS, CIT) and nnnn is the 3 or 4 digit course/module number such 160, 1601, 1602, etc. For example: Course Planner_ACC201 The Course Planner has six tabs (sections). Course Information Course Planner Activity Guide Assessment Guide Course Flowchart Module n Flowchart where n is the module number. Each module course has a flowchart. Course Information Course Prefix & Number, Course Name, Credit Hours, and Description for both the parent and the modules. This information can be found in the Approved Curriculum folder on thepoint. List the Project Team Leader(s) and College developing for the course being course, and Course Team Leader(s), and Developer(s). Date of Development Course Planner For each competency, list Student Learning Outcomes: Specific statement describing what the learner will be able to do in some measurable way upon completing the course module. The module in which the SLO is cover How long the Learning activity will take to complete (time) Learning Activities: List the activities such as discussions, readings, videos, interactive media, and etc. students will complete to learn and practice the content related to this Student Learning Outcome? (formative) Assessments: List the assessments such as tests, papers, case studies, etc. that students will complete to demonstrate mastery of the content. 6 Description: In detail, describe the learning activity. For example, "Reading ", "Watching Video", "Flashcards", etc. Include if this is content activity or practice activity. Student Instructions: Detail what students need to know to complete this learning activity. Include what to expect, what they will be doing, etc. Is the activity required or optional, how many points is it worth, etc. Facilitator Notes: includes anything and everything the facilitator needs to help student successfully complete the learning activity. For example, how to grade an assignment, examples of correct answers, is the assignment graded, is assignment required or optional, Descriptions of videos, what software the student needs, etc. Assessment Guide For the Pre-Assessment, the Post-Assessment and other assessments, list Description: In detail, describe the Assessment. For example, "Reading ", "Watching Video", "Flashcards", etc. Include if this is content activity or practice activity. Student Instructions: Detail what students need to know to complete this Assessment.
