Enhance Your Life With Better Hearing Improving your hearing really can improve your life. Our goal is to help you do it. Imagine... Do you ever think of what life would be like if you could hear just a little bit better? Imagine if it did not seem like everyone around you was mumbling, or if you did not have to give up the things you love because of hearing difficulties. Hearing sounds you have not heard in ages. Enjoying quality time with friends. Savouring special moments with family. Being more involved in activities you love.

5 Your Needs Are Our Needs We Want To Help You Hear Better You want to enjoy life and good hearing can help you do that. We understand exactly what you are going through and how best to help. You are not alone; there are more than 30 million North Americans who live with hearing loss. In fact, all ages are susceptible to hearing loss, especially when it is related to noise exposure. Hearing Healthcare Professionals are expertly trained to ensure your treatment fits your lifestyle and your budget. We are here to help improve your hearing health and get you back to where you want to be enjoying life to the fullest! Our professionally trained staff provides a wide range of care including tests, diagnostics, fittings, counseling and access to the most advanced technology to improve your quality of life. MYTH Hearing loss only affects the elderly. FACT MYTH Children are not susceptible to hearing loss. About 50% of people with hearing loss are under the age of 65. We are committed to bringing you the best service available! FACT Over the last 10 years, the number of 2 graders with hearing loss increased by 280%. Hearing loss for 8th graders increased by over 400%. nd

Ask yourself the questions below. If you answer yes to any of them, it is important to schedule an evaluation. The Test That Could Change Your Life Do you often ask others to repeat themselves? Do you hear a conversation, but have difficulty understanding the words? Have people ever told you that you turn the TV or radio up too loud? Improving your hearing health involves 3 important steps: Do you hear some people more clearly than others? 1 Undergoing a hearing evaluation once a year. 2 Selecting a Hearing Healthcare Professional who understands your needs. Is it difficult for you to hear in a crowded restaurant, a large group situation, or when there is background noise? 3 Using the expertise of your Hearing Healthcare Professional to select the right hearing device and solutions that best suit your needs. MYTH If your hearing was damaged, you would notice it right away. Are you withdrawing more from contact with friends and family? Do you find telephone conversations increasingly straining? Do you have trouble hearing normal household sounds, such as a dripping of the faucet or a doorbell ringing? Have you been told that you speak too loudly? FACT Hearing loss can go unnoticed for years. 7

Hearing Loss FAQs Learning more about your hearing can put you in a better position to protect it. Here are some answers to some commonly asked questions: Q. What causes hearing loss? A. A hearing loss may be caused by hereditary factors, disease or illness, medications, natural aging, or obstruction or damage at one or more locations within the ear. Q. Is all hearing loss the same? A. No, there are three main types of hearing loss: sensorineural, conductive, and mixed. Sensorineural hearing loss results from problems in the inner ear, in the nerve from the inner ear to the brain, or in the brain. Conductive hearing loss occurs when sound is blocked from getting through to the inner ear. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of the two. Q. How can hearing loss be treated? A. Although sensorineural hearing loss cannot be cured, properly selected and fitted hearing instruments can help you to hear speech and other sounds you have been missing out on. Certain types of hearing loss, particularly conductive losses, can be corrected through medical and/or surgical means. Q. How do I know which type of hearing loss I have? A. Visiting a Hearing Healthcare Professional for a comprehensive hearing evaluation is the only way to determine which type you have, and which treatment method will best suit your needs. MYTH If I get a hearing aid, people will notice it right away. FACT Hearing aids are more discreet than ever. 9

Custom-Made Products Behind-the-Ear Open Fit Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC) In-the-Canal (ITC) In-the-Ear (ITE) Many Models, Many Choices 11 Custom products are made from an impression of the wearer s ear so that they fit snugly. They can range in size from the very smallest devices, called completely-inthe-canal devices (or CICs) that make them virtually invisible, to the largest custom size, called in-the-ear or ITE model, that offers the right combination of appearance, ease of use and affordability to meet a variety of hearing losses. Our most flexible hearing model, BTE instruments are manufactured to meet exact specifications and are designed to fit a full range of hearing impairments, from mild to profound. The newest model available, the open-fit product offers the flexibility of the BTE instrument with the virtual invisibility of the CIC because of its miniaturized tubing and earmold/insert. Images courtesy of Widex Canada There is a wide range of hearing devices to choose from, and your Hearing Healthcare Professional will help you select the one that is best for you and your budget. Improved technology can make your experience as comfortable as ever. To get a better understanding of the models available, see the illustrations on the left. Today s hearing instruments have reached such a level of sophistication that they are barely detectable, produce superior sound, and are more user-friendly than ever. They offer: Clearer sound Better separation of desired speech from unwanted noise Smaller sizing (due to chip size) Automatic adjusting to your environment Reduced whistling and feedback We are Committed to You Treating our patients with the care they deserve is a commitment shared by all Hearing Healthcare Professionals. We take the time to understand your situation, answer all your questions, and go over all the treatment options available to you. We will also be there after your fittings to make sure everything is running smoothly. Do not wait; get your hearing checked today and improve the quality of your life for years to come.
