1 Acer erecovery Management Acer erecovery Management provides a fast and reliable method to restore your computer to its factory default settings or user-defined system configuration, from images stored in a hidden hard disk drive partition, secondary partition or optical disc. Acer erecovery Management also backs up system settings, applications and data to the hard disk drive or to optical discs. Note: If you are using an Acer notebook, please connect your system an AC adapter or other permanent power source before performing any backup or restore operations. Using Acer erecovery Management Launching Acer erecovery Management To launch Acer erecovery Management: Click Start > All Programs > Acer Empowering Technology > Acer erecovery Management. Click on the Acer erecovery Management icon in the Empowering Technology toolbar on the desktop.
2 Note: During initial launch, the Acer erecovery Management may ask you to create the Empowering Technology password for your backup files. Follow the onscreen instructions to run the Empowering Technology Password Center and set up your password.
3 Creating the factory default backup discs When you start up your computer, Acer erecovery Management will ask you to create a set of backup optical discs that can be used to restore your system to its factory default state. To do so, insert a writeable optical disc into the optical drive, and then click OK to start burning. This reminder will be disabled after the factory default backup discs are created, or when you check the Don't remind me again option.
4 Managing system backups
5 Creating a full backup You can create a full backup image of the current system configuration (your "C" drive) including all applications, drivers and data. Create a full backup before installing new hardware or software applications to protect your system and data. To create a full backup: 1 Click the Full button on the Acer erecovery Management main window. Acer erecovery Management will tell you the estimated size of the full backup. 2 Enter a description of the backup image, and then click Next.
6 3 When prompted, close all running applications, select Yes, then click Next. 4 The backup process starts. 5 A message appears when the backup process is finished, or if it fails.
7 Creating an incremental backup Instead of a full system backup, you can create an incremental (fast) backup image of the current system configuration to save space. Regular incremental backups are recommended to protect your system and data, especially before installing new hardware components or software applications. You can create multiple incremental backup points on top of one another. Before creating an incremental backup, you can estimate the size of an incremental backup. To do this, move your mouse over the Fast backup button, and then click on Check changes.
8 To create an incremental backup: 1 Click the Fast button on the Acer erecovery Management main window. Acer erecovery Management will tell you the estimated size of the incremental backup. 2 Follow steps 2 to 5 of the previous section. Restoring from a backup point Use the restore function to return your system to its previous state, as recorded in a specific backup point. You can restore from incremental (fast) or full backups. To restore from a backup point: 1 Select the backup point in the Acer erecovery Management main window. 2 Click on Restore. 3 You will be asked for the Empowering Technology password. 4 Enter the Empowering password to begin the restore process. Note: The restore function will begin immediately after you enter the Empowering Technology password and cannot be interrupted. Make sure you have closed all open applications and saved your work before commencing with a system restore.
9 Managing a backup point By right-clicking on a user-created backup point in the Acer erecovery Management main window, you can restore, rename or delete user-created backup points. Note: When deleting a full backup, all incremental backups based on that full backup will also be deleted. Auto-notification Select Notify me if the change from last incremental backup is more than at the bottom of the Acer erecovery Management main page to have Acer erecovery Management notify you if your current system configuration differs from the image stored in your last backup point by at least a certain amount. The notification sizes you can choose from are 200 MB, 300 MB and 500 MB.
10 Burning recovery discs The Burn Disc function allows you to create a set of recovery discs used to restore your system. You can create a factory default disc, user backup disc, current system configuration backup disc or driver and application backup disc. To create recovery discs, select Burn Disc from the bottom of the erecovery window.
11 Create factory default disc The option creates a backup disc containing the factory default system configuration. This is the same backup disc that you are asked to create when first starting up your system. Create user backup disc This option copies the latest user backup image (created on the erecovery main page) to optical disc. You can restore the system to the desired backup point using this disc and the Restore functions.
12 Create current system configuration backup disc This option copies the current system configuration to the optical disc. It will create a backup point with the current system configuration when you select this option, and then burn it to disc. Create driver and application backup disc This option backs up all pre-installed applications and drivers to the optical disc.
13 Restoring the system The Restore function allows you to restore the system to its factory default settings, from a user backup, or from a previously created CD/DVD. You can also reinstall default applications and drivers using Restore. To restore the system, select Restore from the bottom of the erecovery window.
14 Restore system to factory default This option restores the computer to its original state. All previously installed programs and saved data will be lost. When selected, the computer reboots and restores the system from the image in the hidden hard disk drive partition. Before you can use this option, you must enter the Empowering Technology password. Restore system from user's backup This option restores the system using backup image you have created. After entering the Empowering Technology password, you can select which user backup image to restore from.
15 Recover system from CD/DVD This option restores the system using a previously created backup CD/DVD. When selected, the computer reboots from the optical drive. The utility prompts you to insert the backup disc, if not loaded in the optical drive. Reinstall applications/drivers This option allows you to reinstall factory default applications or device drivers. Acer erecovery Management extracts data from a hidden hard disk drive partition. This process may take a few minutes and may disable the keyboard and mouse to ensure system stability. After the image has been extracted, you may see Windows Vista's User Account Control window. Select Continue to proceed with application/driver reinstallation.
16 Widget mode Click the icon on the Empowering Technology toolbar or press the Empowering Key to enter Widget mode. Using the Acer erecovery Management widget, you can view the date and time of the last user backup, as well as access the erecovery Management main window. Recovery at system boot-up Alternatively, Acer erecovery Management can be run when booting up your computer, in the event that you cannot access erecovery from your normal operating system environment. The system will boot from a hidden hard disk drive partition. To run Acer erecovery Management when starting your computer, press <Alt> + <F10> while your computer is starting up (before your operating system loads). Note:You will need to enter the Empowering Technology password to use any restore functions in this mode. Failure to enter the correct password three times reboots the computer to the operating system.
17 Hidden partition main page The hidden partition main page offers three options to restore the system: restore to factory default settings, restore from user's backup, or restore from backup CD/DVD. Restore system to factory default 1 Select this option, and then enter the password. The utility restores the system from the factory default settings image in the hidden hard disk drive partition. 2 When prompted, confirm system recovery. A message appears to tell you that you will lose all data on the drive. The utility then restores the system to its original state. Restore system from user's backup 1 Select this option, and then enter the password. The utility restores the system from the user's backup image in the second hard drive partition. 2 When prompted, confirm system recovery. A message appears to tell you that you will lose all data on the primary partition. The utility then restores the system to the most recent user backup. Restore system from CD/DVD 1 When selected, insert the first backup disc to the optical drive. 2 Confirm system recovery when prompted. A message appears to tell you that you will lose all data on the primary partition. The utility then restores the system from the backup image in the CD/DVD. 3 Insert the other discs when prompted. Note:If you are restoring the system to its factory default settings saved in CDs/DVDs, Acer erecovery Management prompts you to insert disc 2 to start.
