4 Edison Junior High School Students Enjoy Hands-On Activities at Construction Industry Career Expo Photos submitted by Sterling Kingery, Counselor, Edison Junior High School, Rock Island, Illinois T he first week of December 2014 was a great opportunity for regional eighth graders to experience hands-on construction activities at the Construction Industry Career Expo held at the Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 25 building in Rock Island, Illinois. The above photo shows an eighth grade student practicing his hand at bricklaying. Conference Designed to Inspire Parents Set A conference designed to inspire families is set for February 7 at George O. Barr School in Silvis, Illinois. Free breakfast and childcare will be provided. About two dozen sessions are scheduled, with topics including hobbies and crafts appropriate for children, coping with stress and necessities while parenting, and a primer on the Common Core standards. The sessions will be led by teachers and other professionals, as well as parents. For more information, contact Mrs. Jecks at , ext. 232 or [email protected]. The above photo shows an eighth grader wiring an electrical circuit at the Construction Industry Career Expo. More than 1600 students from 18 schools attended making this the biggest turnout yet. Students were sorted into groups and rotated through twelve different stations. At each station, they participated in activities such as: welding, laying bricks, strapping ironwork, wiring a light switch, operating a simulated backhoe, using a power screwdriver, plastering, and cement work. Approximately 225 students from Edison Junior High School attended the Expo on Monday, December 1. Photos from that day were submitted by Sterling Kingery, Counselor. Students were exposed to a variety of hands-on demonstrations for careers in the trades as well as jobs that require specific training and skill sets, said Mr. Kingery. I snapped some photos that I thought you might both want to use to promote the hard work and success of the event, he also added. The event is coordinated through a partnership committee representing business, industry, labor and education. 4 The above photo shows an eighth grade student enjoying her hand at plastering at the Construction Industry Career Expo.

5 ECHO II Students Complete Busy Semester Article submitted by Denise Eilers, ECHO Instructor, UT Area Career Center I n addition to mastering the complex subject of medical terminology this past semester, the Extended Campus Health Occupations II students attended two educational events in the Quad Cities. Both were focused on the subject of dementia and Alzheimer s disease. The burgeoning numbers of baby boomers and increased longevity in the general population makes Alzheimer s disease a hot topic. In October, the students, along with the classroom instructors, attended the annual Alzheimer s conference and workshop at the Radisson Hotel in Davenport, Iowa. Sponsored by Eastern Iowa Community College, topics ran the gamut from dealing with behaviors to end of life issues. In addition, a wide array of vendors allowed attendees to gain more information about products and services available in our area. One of the most impressive sessions involved an early stage patient who spoke about her personal experience with the disease and her daily struggles to cope. Later in the semester, the students were able to further experience Alzheimer s disease from the patient perspective by participating in the Virtual Dementia Tour at Senior Star in Davenport, Iowa. Following an interactive discussion about the science of Alzheimer s disease, participants were able to experience some of the sensory losses that patients may experience. Those in attendance also included family members of patients and caregivers. Students were overwhelmingly enthusiastic about both events. Funds Available to Help Illinois Residents Caring for Someone with Alzheimer s F ederal funding is available to Illinois residents caring for someone with Alzheimer s or another form of dementia. These funds are available to help caregivers with medical care and supplies such as dentures, eyeglasses and hearing aids, environmental and material aids such as assistive technology, and community access services involving transportation. Contact Western Illinois Area Agency on Aging at for more information. The above photo shows four students from UT Area Career Center in front of a display sponsored by the Alzheimer s Association. These students are CNAs in ECHO II, the Extended Campus Health Occupation s second year program, attending the conference on Alzheimer s in Davenport, Iowa. 5 Please note: The UT Area Career Center wants to remind everyone that program applications are available on their website. Please visit us online. Go to Put your cursor over Area Career Center and you will see the ACC and QCC TEC buttons.

Some of those careers involved piecework where students collated worksheets into a folder, placed a sticker on the folder, and packed them into boxes. Students also worked in an assembly line where they made notepads using cardboard backing, colored paper, and glue. Everyone was able to take home a notepad. Students also experienced manufacturing at another station where they used a hot press to transfer a design onto a t-shirt. Brett Dale from River Music Experience talked about how music influenced his life and his experiences playing with Lonny Brooks and traveling the world. Students were taught how to bag groceries at the retail station and they learned various housekeeping duties at different job sites. During their lunch break, students became sandwich artists with the help of SubWay employees. 6 The photo below shows students who attended Career Day putting together packets by assembly line.
