3 Introduction and background Introduction and background for all stages of mentors In August 2006 the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved a single framework to support learning and assessment in practice. This was updated in September Within this framework there are eight domains, each with descriptors identifying four developmental stages which closely relate to some of the dimensions in the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (NHS KSF 2004). The defined mandatory standards provide a developmental framework for all mentors and practice teachers. All mentors and practice teachers must be entered onto a local register held and updated by their employing Trust.
4 Guidance Guidance for mentors and practice teachers It is essential that the mentor passport is reviewed on an annual basis at the individual mentor Performance Development Review (PDR). On an annual basis the mentor needs to provide evidence in relation to the NMC Development Framework Domains. Triennial review must take place every three years ideally during the mentor s annual PDR. Within the mentor passport, mentors need to document and reflect upon learning/assessment activities. At triennial review, to remain active, the mentor will need to complete a statement of intent with their reviewers signature and send a copy to the Practice Education Facilitators. The line manager will also need to keep a copy. Contacts For further information and support you can: Access the Practice Education Facilitator s intranet page: Home/Departments & Services/Non-clinical/education_and_ knowledge/practice_education_facilitators PEF@rlbuht.nhs.uk Telephone: /2155
