2 JOB PURPOSE The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner is a person with knowledge and experience of play and recreation with the well child and is a fully integrated member of the Health Professionals Team. The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will be based within ward/department teams and be line managed through the Therapeutic & Specialised Play Services. She/he will work independently, liaising closely with Play Specialists, using own initiative and organisation skills. The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will provide developmental play and recreation for all ages and diversities in an effort to fulfil emotional, social and developmental needs. The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will provide play and recreation provision to help promote public health and current government legalisation for children and young people of all ages. The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will take an active role in promoting and developing equality and diversity through play and recreation for children and young people s individual needs. She/he will help create a positive environment and positive patient experience for all children and young people and their families. She/he will provide interesting and stimulating play/recreation programmes for children, young people and their families. She/he will provide hours of work to meet the needs of the service. This may include late afternoons, some evening and weekends She/he will work closely with a qualified and registered Play Specialist to develop simple play techniques used in healthcare through supervision. She/he will work closely with a qualified and registered Play Specialist for mentorship, supervision and leadership to assist working with the sick child and his/her family. The Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will highlight the importance of play in assisting recovery and aiding development to parents, carers and all health professionals and students. Although the Play Leader/Healthcare Play Practitioner will be based within one ward or department, they may be asked to work across the Children s Division and will be asked to work in other areas and undertake Trust initiatives. MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES CLINICAL: 1. To be a communication link with Health Care Professionals between the child/young person and the parents/carer providing continuity of information and care where applicable. 2. Assess the needs and views of children and young people to provide developmental/recreational play activities in the ward or department creating an age appropriate environment both comfortable and stimulating and including equality and diversity. 3. With the co-operation of staff, create conditions in which play and recreation occurs naturally both in and out of the Play Leader s presence. 4. Form supportive relationships with family members and encourage them to participate in play and recreation assisting the developing needs of their child/young person and aiding their recovery and psychosocial needs. 5. Provide play and recreation and psycho-social support for siblings when required. Page 2 of 2
3 6. Assist the child and young person and family to adjust to his/her environment by providing orientation to play provisions within the ward/department and Play Services. 7. Liaise closely with the Ward Manager, Healthcare Professionals and supporting Play Specialist on duty with regard to the needs of children/young people. 8. Attend meetings and contribute as required within the ward/department and where required. 9. Devise individual play/recreation programmes fulfilling developmental/recreation needs, when appropriate, including equality and diversity for all children and young people s needs. 10. Liaise with the Play Specialist (mentor) regarding simple preparation and psycho-social needs for long term patients or those with specific needs. 11. Communicate and document information relevant to the play and recreation provision provided to nursing or other relevant disciplines. 12. Provide a daily routine planner to assist in the organisation of your day enabling staff, patients and families gain information of your daily routine. 13. Attend case conferences/common assessment frameworks and appropriate meetings with ward/department members when necessary. 14. Participate in pre-admission to hospital discharge and transition work liaising with Play Specialists as required. 15. Participate in the Trust s teenager/recreation schemes. 16. Participate in patient, public involvement projects, consultations, obtaining user views. 17. Be fully aware of hospital policies with regard to: a. Fire b. Safeguarding c. Health & Safety/Infection Control d. HIV e. Manual & Handling f. All local ward policies e.g. absconding or playroom safety MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP: 1. Maintain clear reports and records in appropriate files/documentation. 2. Select and maintain appropriate play/recreation equipment and resources for all ages, needs and diversities, including developmental materials, sensory items, simple preparation and distraction/ participation tools. 3. Participate in budget and ordering. 4. Ensure effective communication to healthcare professionals sharing knowledge of play and recreation. Inform your Line Manager of any issues/developments positive or negative about any aspect of play/recreation provisions and service. 5. Participate in Play Service Schemes and projects. CLINICAL GOVERNANCE: 1. Practice and comply with the Trust s Clinical Governance Strategy. 2. Ensure health and safety, infection control and security regulations are adhered to. Page 3 of 3
4 3. Maintain play/recreational equipment ensuring all play equipment meets Health, Safety and Infection Control standards. 4. Participate in risk assessments. 5. Participate in Paediatric Benchmarking and Essence of Care for Play Services. STAFF EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT 1. Participate in student placements and learning development programmes for students and multidisciplinary team members regarding the value of play and recreation. 2. Promote the importance of play and recreation to all professionals including students and new staff members. 3. Liaise with Play Specialists regarding developing the professional role in healthcare. 4. To participate in and discuss and comment upon new developments relevant in the field of practice. RESEARCH AND AUDIT: 1. Undertake secondary research, incorporating evidence based practice and develop skills to undertake primary research relevant to the professional role. 2. Provide statistical information on service provisions including audits and reports. PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: 1. To be aware of and be involved in current trends of play and recreation. 2. To be responsible for own practice and development of self and service. 3. To be involved in your Personal Development Review (PDR) providing aims and objectives to achieve, a self assessment and an up to date professional portfolio. 4. Option to undertake further study to become a qualified and registered Hospital Play Specialist (HPSET qualification recommended by the Hospital Trust and the Department of Health). Protective clothing and equipment must be used where appropriate. All accidents must be reported to your Senior Manager and you are asked to participate by reporting potential hazards.
