3 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the USB Portable Firewall. This device not only provides you with a convenient portable USB memory stick, but also provides you with additional security not available on other leading USB flash drives. We believe that security is an important priority when it comes to the personal data on your computer, so we ve created this USB Portable Firewall to help prevent any destructive computer viruses from infecting the files on your USB key. Help protect your personal computer from outside viruses by using the USB Portable Firewall today. Product Contents The USB Portable Firewall package consists of three items: 1x USB Portable Firewall device 1x User Manual 1x CD containing the USB Firewall Utility software USB Portable Firewall The USB Portable Firewall serves as a USB key which protects your computer against virus-infected files transferred to the USB device. Below the specs of the device are listed as well as some usage tips for the device. Specs The USB Portable Firewall initially contains the following specs: 1 GB onboard USB storage ClamAV anti-virus system USB 1.1 device-to-host connection In addition, the USB Portable Firewall was created for the Windows XP operating system (certain functionality may or may not work on other Windows-based operating systems). Linux and Mac support may be available in the future. Note: it is important to keep the anti-virus definitions up-to-date with the current version. It is a good idea to check for any new updates on the USB Portable Firewall site after purchasing this product and to check the website monthly for software updates. Usage When you plug the USB Portable Firewall into a Windows XP based machine, you should see a message in the lower right-hand corner of your screen notifying that a USB mass storage device has been connected, as shown below: 1

4 Then go to My Computer and double-click on the drive labeled USB Portable Firewall. From here, you can transfer files to and from your USB Portable Firewall by drag-anddropping files onto the device. The USB Portable Firewall itself is shown below: The main features to note are the USB connection on the end, the three colored lights on the top side, and the switch on the top side. The USB connection connects the device to your computer in order to transfer data. Each of the lights has a specific meaning, listed below: Yellow light A solid yellow light indicates that the device is starting up and is not yet ready for file transfer Green light A solid green light indicates that the device is ready for transfer and is not currently transferring data to or from the device. A blinking green light represents that the device is currently transferring data across to or from the device. The green light will stop blinking once the transfer is complete. Red light A solid red light means that the override switch is active (more on the override switch below). In order to turn off the red light, switch the override switch to the off position. The final feature on the top of the USB Portable Firewall is the override switch. This switch, when turned on, overrides any file blocking for the device. Thus, any file detected with a virus will be allowed to transfer to the USB Portable Firewall. This feature should only be used sparingly only whenever you absolutely must transfer a specific file over without regard to the security of that file. The override switch activates 2

5 the red light when turned on to let you know that viruses aren t currently being blocked from transfer. USB Firewall Utility The USB Firewall Utility comes on a CD packaged with the USB Portable Firewall. This utility provides you the ability to do two things on your home computer: Read virus log files found on the USB Portable Firewall to determine what viruses your device has recently blocked Transfer an updated anti-virus over to the device in order to keep the virus blocker up-to-date with the latest viruses Each of these functions will be explained in more detail in the Usage subsection for USB Firewall Utility. Installation 1. Place the USB Firewall Utility CD in your CD tray 2. Access the data on the CD by opening the drive letter under My Computer 3. Drag and drop usbfwutil.exe into the directory of your choice Usage In order to start the USB Firewall Utility program, double-click on usbfwutil.exe Once you start the program, you will see the main menu for the USB Firewall Utility. A screenshot of the utility is shown below: 3

6 Notice that the utility s main menu consists of four main sections. The upper left-hand section displays a list of the infected files on the system. Currently, the infected files list is asking for the drive of the USB Firewall device, which has not yet been specified. In order to specify a drive, first you must plug the USB Portable Firewall into your computer. Then select the drop-down menu in the lower left-hand section of the screen and select the appropriate drive. Be sure the USB Portable Firewall remains connected while you run the USB Firewall Utility. Now that a drive has been selected, you are ready to use the USB Firewall Utility program to manage your USB Portable Firewall device. From here, you can utilize one of the two options that the utility provides: reading the log files for the viruses caught and updating the anti-virus blocking definitions. 4

7 1) Reading Virus Log Files Once you specify the drive for the device, a list of infected files caught by the USB Portable Firewall should come up: By selecting any of these files, a list of detailed information about the infected file will appear in the Virus Information section (upper right). This information includes the following data: File the name of the infected file Size the storage size (in kilobytes) of the file blocked Last Modified the date the file was last changed Virus Detected the name of the virus signature matching the file 5

8 Type a classification on what type of virus was caught (virus, worm, trojan, etc. or more than one of these) Action Taken how the virus was handled by the USB Portable Firewall (blocking the virus from transferring being the most common case) An example of this data is shown in the Virus Information section of the screenshot below: You can view the data for any of the infected files listed in the upper left-hand section of the utility. 6

9 2) Updating Anti-Virus Software The Update Anti-Virus Software section in the lower right-hand section of the menu allows you to update the USB Portable Firewall with the latest virus protection available. First, you must download the latest anti-virus software, found at After downloading this software, click the Browse button in the USB Firewall Utility menu to search for the file. Find the downloaded software on your computer using the browse dialog, select it, and click OK. Then click the Update button on the USB Firewall Utility menu in order to update the anti-virus software on the USB Portable Firewall. 7
