David Bekham was born in London in 1975 into a footballloving family. The young David was not very good at shoolwork and spent all his spare time playing football. He was enouraged by his father, who was a Manhester United fan, and joined Manhester United when he was 16. He played his first game for them a year later, and went on to help them win many trophies, inluding the European Champions Cup. He played his first game for England when he was 21. He was sent off against Argentina in a World Cup math, whih England lost. When he was 25, he beame the aptain of England s national football team. Pages 8 14 Getting sent off the pith in 1998 made Bekham unpopular, but he sored England s only goal when they beat Argentina in the 2002 World Cup math. One year later Manhester United sold him to Real Madrid, the best team in the world, for twenty-five million pounds. He is married to Vitoria ( Posh Spie of the famous pop group, the Spie Girls) and they have beome one of the most famous and glamorous ouples in the world. David is always in the newspapers and magazines beause of his football, his family, his house, his ars and his hair. Bekham loves hildren, and he has opened his own football shools in Greenwih and Los Angeles. He is just an ordinary family man at heart, and a wonderful model for young people all over the world. Bakground and themes Fame and stardom: David Bekham is not just a football star. He has beome an international ion, of great interest to the media and to people who don t even like football. He is, of ourse, a brilliant footballer. He is also goodlooking, rih and married to a pop star. Some people think that he is boring. He never gets into trouble, never auses sandal and obviously adores his wife and hildren. So why are people so interested in him? Probably beause his story offers hope to ordinary young people everywhere. Youth poliy in football: Bekham was signed on by Manhester United for their youth training programme when he was young. Now he himself has opened his own football aademy. Football and money: Bekham agreed to a $250 million five-year deal with the LA Galaxy in Los Angeles. 6 Teaher s notes LEVEL 1 Pelé Teaher Support Programme Rod Smith Summary This book is a biography of the legendary Brazilian soer player Pelé. It traes his life from his early days as a poor boy who played barefoot beause his family ould not afford soer shoes, to his later life as an ambassador for the Brazilian government, and one of the most suessful soer players the world has ever seen. Pages 1 7: Pelé was born in 1940 into a poor family. His father was a soer player. He wanted Pelé to be a soer player too, but his mother wanted him to be a dotor. Although he was good at soer, Pelé s dream was to work at an airport. However, when he was eight years old, he witnessed an air rash and gave up his dream of working with airplanes. Pelé learnt to play soer from his father and soon beame the best player in town. He formed a soer team with his friends and they soon won the hampionships. At the suggestion of a loal manager, Pelé joined the famous Brazilian team, Santos. He sored a lot of goals for the team and was soon famous. Pages 7 15: In 1957, Pelé was aepted onto the Brazilian national team. He played in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden and sored six goals in all, whih helped Brazil win the hampionship. He later went on to play in the 1966 and 1970 World Cup hampionships too. While wathing a girl s soer math in 1958, Pelé met a young girl, Rosemeri Cholby, who later beame his wife. Pelé s soer shedule often took him away from home, whih was diffiult for his family life. In 1974, Pelé retired from Santos and moved to New York in order to bring soer to the United States. He played for three more years before retiring from the game. After this, Pelé worked as an ambassador for the Brazilian government and also for the international organization UNICEF, whih helps hildren in trouble around the world. Bakground and themes Ambition: Pelé is born into a poor family, who ould not even afford to buy him soer shoes, but it did not stop him from playing. He works hard to be a good soer player, and by working hard, he ahieves his goals and beomes a world famous and suessful player. Values: When Pelé retired from soer, he was very famous and very rih. Instead of simply enjoying his retirement, he ontinued to work to help those less fortunate than himself. He used his talents to improve his life and ontinued to use his talents to help others improve theirs. Disussion ativities Before reading 1 Disuss: Ask students to look at the front over of the book. Who is the man? Where is he? Do students know anything about Pelé? If so, ask them to write a list of things that they know about him. If not, ask students to look at the piture and talk about what they think about him. What nationality is he? What kind of harater is he? What is he doing in this piture? 2 Group work: Put students into groups. Give them five minutes to hoose a famous sport star (for less able students ask them to hoose a sport). Eah group should prepare a few sentenes about their sport star/sport but without using the star s/sport s name. Eah group takes it in turns to read out their sentenes to the lass. The lass guesses the sport star/sport. Alternatively, ask students to work individually and to write a few sentenes about their favourite sport star/sport. After reading 3 Role play: Put students into pairs. Ask one student to take the role of Pelé s father and the other to take the role of his mother. Tell students to imagine that they are Pelé s parents talking about their son after Brazil s suess in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. Ask them to prepare a onversation between his mother and father. They should use their imagination and think about how they both feel about the suess of their son. Walk round the lass and help the students with their dialogues. Give students time to pratise before asking onfident pairs to role play their dialogues in front of the lass.
