4 History of the College Ranger College is one of the oldest public two-year colleges in continuous operation in the state of Texas. Its history actually predates the legislation authorizing and establishing junior colleges in the state. In August 1925, the Board of Education of the Ranger Public Schools voted to proceed with plans for establishment of a junior college. On September 13, 1926, Ranger College opened with thirty students enrolled. The College operated under supervision of a College Council composed of three members of the Board of Education and nine other Ranger citizens. The College was recognized by the State Department of Education on March 23, The first State statute authorizing junior colleges was passed by the 41 st Legislature in The College operated under this statute until the passage of the Validation of Junior College District Acts by the 45 th Legislature in The College continued to operate as part of the public school system until August 18, On this date, the Board of Education voted to separate the Junior College and the public schools. As a result of this action, Ranger Junior College, after 24 years of joint operation with the public school system, became a unit within itself. In this separate unit, Dr. G. C. Boswell became the first official President of the College. The College has operated continuously as a autonomous educational institution overseen by a Board of Regents since that date. Location Ranger College s main campus occupies a 50-acre campus within the city limits of Ranger, an Eastland County community of approximately 2,500 people located just north of Interstate 20 between Fort Worth and Abilene. Students on the Ranger campus may live in the college's dormitories and enjoy the college dining facilities or live at home and commute. The beautifully wooded, rolling hills and several lakes provide ample opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation, while the City of Ranger boasts an excellent school system and several active churches. In addition to the Ranger facility, the college provides comprehensive course offerings at satellite campuses in Brown County in Early and in Erath County in Stephenville. Ranger College serves a district of several counties in north central Texas including Eastland, Erath, Brown, Comanche, and Young. General Information A program in academic studies can be taken at any of the Ranger College campuses. In addition, Workforce programs in Nursing, Cosmetology, Computer Information Systems, Office Technology, Welding, and Commercial Truck Driving are offered at the various campuses. Continuing Education courses are also offered at the Erath center. Ranger College awards the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees in addition to numerous one-semester and one-year program certificates. Ranger College has experienced tremendous growth in recent years throughout the district. Especially notable has been the rapid increase in dual enrollment at the 24 Independent School Districts served by the institution. We are one of the fastest growing colleges in Texas! In spite of all the growth and development, Ranger College maintains one of the lowest tuition and fee costs in Texas.
